ber den Mechanismus der positiv inotropen Wirkung von Theophyllin am Warmblterherzen
1971
In order to further elucidate the mechanism of the positive inotropiceffect of theophylline (T) in mammalian cardiac muscle, the influence of T on contractile force, extracellular space,45Ca uptake,45Ca release, and total myocardial calcium concentration was investigated in isolated, electrically driven (frequency 170 beats/min) or quiescent left guinea-pig atria. The investigations were performed in Tyrode solution containing 0.45 mM CaCl2. T concentration was 5×10−4 g/ml. Under these conditions, T exerted maximal positive inotropic but no toxic effects, that is, it did not cause contractures or arrythmias within 60 min (Fig. 1). The experiments provide evidence that T increases the rate o…

Kinetics and state-dependent effects of verapamil on cardiac L-type calcium channels.
1996
The voltage dependence and the kinetics of block by verapamil of L-type calcium current (ICa) were investigated in ventricular myocytes from rat hearts using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique. ICa was elicited repetitively in response to depolarizing voltage pulses from -80 mV to 0 mV at different pulse intervals and durations. Verapamil reduced the magnitude of ICa in a frequency-dependent manner without tonic component. The time course of ICa remained unchanged suggesting that not open but inactivated channels were affected by the drug. The interaction of verapamil with inactivated channels was investigated by the application of twin pulses. In the presence of verapamil, the duration o…
Der Einfluss von Acetylcholin auf den Calciumumsatz ruhender und kontrahierender Vorhofmuskulaturin vitro
1964
Acetylcholine 5 × 10−8 g/ml reduces the Ca45 uptake of the beating left atria of guinea-pig; the tissue calcium is not altered. In resting atria, acetylcholine 5 × 10−7 g/ml has no influence upon the calcium content and Ca45 uptake. It is concluded that acetylcholine acts by shortening the action potential duration and thereby reduces the release of cellular calcium per excitation.
Negative pressures in CaWO4 nanocrystals
2009
Tetragonal scheelite-type CaWO4 nanocrystals recently prepared by a hydrothermal method show an enhancement of its structural symmetry with the decrease in nanocrystal size. The analysis of the volume dependence of the structural parameters in CaWO4 nanocrystals with the help of ab initio total-energy calculations shows that the enhancement of the symmetry in the scheelite-type nanocrystals is a consequence of the negative pressure exerted on the nanocrystals; i.e., the nanocrystals are under tension. Besides, the behavior of the structural parameters in CaWO4 nanocrystals for sizes below 10 nm suggests an onset of a scheelite-to-zircon phase transformation in good agreement with the predic…
Trace element data covering 96-7 ka BP from stalagmite CM (Santo Tomas Cave, Cuba)
2020
We present a new speleothem trace element and stable isotope record, which extends previous paleoclimate evidence from Cuban speleothems to the last 96 ka. Stable isotope samples were micromilled at a resolution of 0.10-0.33mm, and measured using an IRMS equipped with a Gasbench. Line scans of Element/Calcium ratios of the speleothem were measured by laser ablation ICPMS and were reduced to the resolution of the stable isotope records.
Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure in calcium 4snp and 4snf F Rydberg states
2000
Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure have been measured in 4snp 1 P1 and Rydberg states for all stable calcium isotopes and the radioisotope 41Ca using high-resolution laser spectroscopy. Triple-resonance excitation via Rydberg state was followed by photoionization with a CO2 laser and mass selective ion detection. Isotope shifts for the even-mass isotopes have been analyzed to derive specific mass shift and field shift factors. The apparent isotope shifts for 41Ca and 43Ca exhibit anomalous values that are n-dependent. This is interpreted in terms of hyperfine-induced fine-structure mixing, which becomes very pronounced when singlet-triplet fine-structure splitting is comparable to the h…
Modelling biological and chemically induced precipitation of calcium phosphate in enhanced biological phosphorus removal systems
2011
The biologically induced precipitation processes can be important in wastewater treatment, in particular treating raw wastewater with high calcium concentration combined with Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal. Currently, there is little information and experience in modelling jointly biological and chemical processes. This paper presents a calcium phosphate precipitation model and its inclusion in the Activated Sludge Model No 2d (ASM2d). The proposed precipitation model considers that aqueous phase reactions quickly achieve the chemical equilibrium and that aqueous-solid change is kinetically governed. The model was calibrated using data from four experiments in a Sequencing Batch Rea…
Effects of sulindac sulfide on the membrane architecture and the activity of gamma-secretase.
2007
gamma-Secretase is a membrane-embedded multi-protein complex that catalyzes the final cut of the Alzheimer's disease-related amyloid precursor protein (APP) to amyloid-beta peptides of variable length (37-43 amino acids) via an unusual intramembrane cleavage. Recent findings propose that some commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have the ability to modulate specifically gamma-secretase activity without inhibiting the enzyme as a whole. These drugs may shift the processing of APP from the longer amyloid-beta 42 peptide towards shorter, less fibrillogenic and less toxic amyloid-beta species. We hypothesize that gamma-secretase activity, as an enzyme that is strictly as…
Calcifying zooplankton standing stocks and in the North Pacific from the R/V Kilo Moana cruise KM1712
2022
This dataset compiles the standing stocks (ind/m³), the integrated standing stocks (ind/m²) and the integrated CaCO3 standing stocks (mg/m²) for three groups of zooplanktonic calcifying organisms: pteropods, heteropods and foraminifers. The organisms were collected by oblique towing (Ø 0.5 m, 90 μm mesh size, SeaGear mechanical flowmeter) in the North Pacific between Hawaii and the Gulf of Alaska during the R/V Kilo Moana cruise KM1712 in August 2017. The sampling strategy was designed to capture an integrated sample of all foraminifers, pteropods and heteropods from juveniles to adults living throughout the upper water column. Pteropods and heteropods were quantified and shell diameter mea…
