Nanoparticles with different surface PEGylation degree were prepared by using as starting material alpha,beta-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-d,l-aspartamide (PHEA). PHEA was functionalized with a PEG amino-derivative for obtaining PHEA-PEG(2000) copolymer. Oral lichenoid drug reaction by lithium in a patient with bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a psychiatric disease characterized by recurrent and alternated episodes of depression and mania. For the treatment of BD, anticonvulsants drugs as lithium, carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine can be used. These drugs can be associated with potential adverse effects: weight gain, tremors, thyroid abnormalities, and cognitive, gastrointestinal, cardiac or dermatological problems. We describe a case of BD with oral lichenoid drug reaction probably because of the mood stabilizers.

The oldest animals on Earth, sponges, form both the calcareous and the siliceous matrices of their spicules enzymatically. Until recently, it has been neglected that enzymes play crucial roles during formation of these biominerals. This paradigm shift occurred after the discovery that the enzyme silicatein, which catalyzes the polycondensation of silica, and the enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA), which catalyzes the formation of bicarbonate (HCO3(-)/CaCO3), produce solid amorphous bioglass or biocalcite. Abstract We experimentally characterize the ionic conduction of single and multipore nanoporous membranes in aprotic organic electrolytes. To this end, soft-etched (SE) membranes with pore diameters in the nanometer range and track-etched (TE) membranes with pore diameters in the tens of nanometers range are investigated. In aqueous conditions, the membrane ionic conduction rates follow the same trend of the bulk solution conductivities. Influence of calcium‐based fillers and vegetable oil on the processability and yield behavior of polyolefins

The mixing of different polyolefins, several calcium-based fillers, and a type of vegetable oil was investigated. The effect of viscosity and type of polyolefin on Young's modulus, yield stress, and elongation at yield has been determined. Tensile and machine torque properties have been studied for both mixing at 180°C and at 250°C as a function of the content of several types of calcium carbonate or calcium hydroxide filler. The influence of the addition of a sunflower oil as a lubricant has also been characterized. The conversion of carbon dioxide into valuable chemicals such as cyclic carbonates is an appealing topic for the scientific community due to the possibility of valorizing waste into an inexpensive, available, nontoxic, and renewable carbon feedstock. In this regard, last-generation heterogeneous catalysts are of great interest owing to their high catalytic activity, robustness, and easy recovery and recycling. In the present review, recent advances on CO 2 cycloaddition to epoxide mediated by hybrid catalysts through organometallic or organo-catalytic species supported onto silica-, nanocarbon-, and metal-organic framework (MOF)-based heterogeneous materials, are highlighted and discussed.

In order to improve the mechanical properties of scaffolds for bone tissue engineering, the present study aims to bring calcium carbonate (CaCO3) with signaling molecules, namely pearl powder, into poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA). PLLA/aragonite and PLLA/vaterite scaffolds were successfully fabricated by the freeze-drying method. Both composite scaffolds had a similar porous structure but a different saturated content of pearl powders. For both scaffolds, the porosity decreases and yield strength increases as pearl powder content increases. Introducing pearl powders into PLLA can improve the mechanical properties of the scaffolds. Calcium carbonate is the material that builds up the spicules of the calcareous sponges. Recent results revealed that the calcium carbonate/biocalcite-based spicular skeleton of these animals is formed through an enzymatic mechanism, such as the skeleton of the siliceous sponges, evolutionarily the oldest animals that consist of biosilica. The enzyme that mediates the calcium carbonate deposition has been identified as a carbonic anhydrase (CA) and has been cloned from the calcareous sponge species Sycon raphanus.
