METODI DI STUDIO DELLA VARIABILITA’ DELLA FREQUENZA CARDIACA

2010

Pentamidine rescues contractility and rhythmicity in a Drosophila model of myotonic dystrophy heart dysfunction

2015

Up to 80% of individuals with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) will develop cardiac abnormalities at some point during the progression of their disease, the most common of which is heart blockage of varying degrees. Such blockage is characterized by conduction defects and supraventricular and ventricular tachycardia, and carries a high risk of sudden cardiac death. Despite its importance, very few animal model studies have focused on the heart dysfunction in DM1. Here, we describe the characterization of the heart phenotype in a Drosophila model expressing pure expanded CUG repeats under the control of the cardiomyocyte-specific driver GMH5-Gal4. Morphologically, expression of 250 CUG repeat…

Obesity and cardiovascular risk: a call for action from the European Society of Hypertension Working Group of Obesity, Diabetes and the High-risk Pat…

2018

: Obesity predisposes for atrial fibrillation, heart failure, sudden cardiac death, renal disease and ischemic stroke, which are the main causes of cardiovascular hospitalization and mortality. As obesity and the cardiovascular effects on the vessels and the heart start early in life, even from childhood, it is important for health policies to prevent obesity very early before the disease manifestation emerge. Key roles in the prevention are strategies to increase physical exercise, reduce body weight and to prevent or treat hypertension, lipids disorders and diabetes earlier and efficiently to prevent cardiovascular complications.

Can The Aortic Wall Comunicate With Us?

2014

OBJECTIVE: Association between aortic aneurysm wall and risk of rupture or dissection. METHODS: Aortic specimens were obtained from 73 patients (51 men and 22 women, whose median age 61.7± 10.7 years) undergoing surgical repair of thoracic ascending aneurysm (TAA). Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses were performed using adequate tissue specimens, appropriate techniques and criteria. Furthermore, genetic risk factors were also investigated. RESULTS: We identified three phenotypes of TAAs with different quality of aortic wall at the time of operation: phenotype I (normal wall); phenotype II (moderate wall thickness); phenotype III (thin and weak wall). No significant differenc…

Echocardiographic Evaluation of the Cardiac Chambers in Asthmatic Patients: The BADA (Blood Pressure Levels, Clinical Features and Markers of Subclin…

2022

The “Blood pressure levels, clinical features and markers of subclinical cardiovascular Damage of Asthma patients” (BADA) study is aimed at defining the cardiovascular risk profile and the markers of subclinical and clinical vascular and cardiac damage in asthmatic patients. Very few studies have assessed asthmatic patients without concomitant heart disease through a transthoracic echocardiogram. The goal of the present study is to investigate the prevalence of morphology and/or function changes in the cardiac chambers of a sample of 86 patients with chronic asthma, referred to the dedicated outpatient unit of the Division of Respiratory Diseases of the AOUP “P. Giaccone&r…
