Expanded CCUG repeat RNA expression in Drosophila heart and muscle trigger Myotonic Dystrophy type 1-like phenotypes and activate autophagocytosis ge…

2016

AbstractMyotonic dystrophies (DM1–2) are neuromuscular genetic disorders caused by the pathological expansion of untranslated microsatellites. DM1 and DM2, are caused by expanded CTG repeats in the 3′UTR of the DMPK gene and CCTG repeats in the first intron of the CNBP gene, respectively. Mutant RNAs containing expanded repeats are retained in the cell nucleus, where they sequester nuclear factors and cause alterations in RNA metabolism. However, for unknown reasons, DM1 is more severe than DM2. To study the differences and similarities in the pathogenesis of DM1 and DM2, we generated model flies by expressing pure expanded CUG ([250]×) or CCUG ([1100]×) repeats, respectively, and compared …

CRT-724 Can the Aortic Wall Communicate with Us?

2014

Association between aortic aneurysm wall and risk of rupture or dissection. Aortic specimens were obtained from 73 patients (51 men and 22 women, whose median age 61.7± 10.7 years) undergoing surgical repair of thoracic ascending aneurysm (TAA). Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses

The Sick Adipose Tissue: New Insights Into Defective Signaling and Crosstalk With the Myocardium

2021

Adipose tissue (AT) biology is linked to cardiovascular health since obesity is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and positively correlated with excessive visceral fat accumulation. AT signaling to myocardial cells through soluble factors known as adipokines, cardiokines, branched-chain amino acids and small molecules like microRNAs, undoubtedly influence myocardial cells and AT function via the endocrine-paracrine mechanisms of action. Unfortunately, abnormal total and visceral adiposity can alter this harmonious signaling network, resulting in tissue hypoxia and monocyte/macrophage adipose infiltration occurring alongside expanded intra-abdominal and epicardial fat depots seen …

EVAR IN OUT CLINIC PATIENTS: IS IT FEASIBLE AND SAFE?

2013

Introduction Only little is known about endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) performed as an outpatient procedure. We report here a two-center (Middelares Hospital, Antwerp (Deurne), Belgium and University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland) experience in 104 EVAR patients of which a group of 52 patients have been treated on an outpatient (out-EVAR) basis and compared to a matched group of 52 patients that have been treated as inpatients (in-EVAR). Methods Selection criterions for out-EVAR were: informed consent, travel time to the hospital if readmission was required of <30-60 minutes, and technically uncomplicated EVAR. Most out-EVAR has been treated percutaneous. In-EVAR patients consisted in a…

Micro – Meso scale based biomechanical models to assist the design and fabrication of scaffolds for Cardiac Tissue Regeneration

2011

Inhibition of Rac1 signaling by lovastatin protects against anthracycline-induced cardiac toxicity

2011

Normal tissue damage limits the efficacy of anticancer therapy. For anthracyclines, the clinically most relevant adverse effect is cardiotoxicity. The mechanisms involved are poorly understood and putative cardioprotectants are controversially discussed. Here, we show that the lipid-lowering drug lovastatin protects rat H9c2 cardiomyoblasts from doxorubicin in vitro. Protection by lovastatin is related to inhibition of the Ras-homologous GTPase Rac1. It rests on a reduced formation of DNA double-strand breaks, resulting from the inhibition of topoisomerase II by doxorubicin. Doxorubicin transport and reactive oxygen species are not involved. Protection by lovastatin was confirmed in vivo. I…

Red Blood Cells Distribution Width as Biomarker of Worsening in Atherosclerosis

2018

Red blood cell Distribution Width (RDW) is a parameter of the circulating erythrocytes’ size that it has reported to be associated with Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) [1-7]. The related mechanism of this association is not fully understood. However, RDW is an indicator of inflammation related to early inflammatory biomarkers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) [8,9]. Accordingly, systemic chronic inflammation leads to dysfunctional bone marrow with unsuccessful production of red blood cells [10]. As a result, it determines the migration of reticulocytes into the peripheral circulation, followed by an increase in circulating levels of i…
