Degrees of Acting Parliamentarily
2018
The chapter deals with the distinct chances to extend parliamentary thinking of politics beyond parliaments in ordinary sense and discuss its limits. The point of comparing the parliamentary paradigm with other types of politics, such as intra-party struggles or multilateral diplomacy, lies in constructing a spectrum from the parliament to other assemblies. To analyse parliamentary degree of politics for example the prefixes as proto-, semi-, quasi- or pseudo-parliamentary assemblies are analysed. A special case lies in the relationships between academic and parliamentary debates based on the recognition of the dissensus, but having for example different relationships to written and oral de…
HUMAN LEUKOCYTE ANTIGEN POLYMORPHISMS IN ITALIAN PRIMARY BILIARY CIRRHOSIS: A MULTICENTER STUDY OF 664 PATIENTS AND 1992 HEALTHY CONTROLS
2008
Genetic factors are critical in determining susceptibility to primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), but there has not been a clear association with human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes. We performed a multicenter case-control study and analyzed HLA class II DRB1 associations using a large cohort of 664 well-defined cases of PBC and 1992 controls of Italian ancestry. Importantly, healthy controls were rigorously matched not only by age and sex, but also for the geographical origin of the proband four grandparents (Northern, Central, and Southern Italy). After correction for multiple testing, DRB1*08 [odds ratio (OR), 3.3; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.4-4.5] and DRB1*02 (OR 0.9; 95% CI 0.8-1.2) …
THE PROMOTION OF FUTURE PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS’ ABILITY FOR ANALYSING COMPLEX EDUCATIONAL SITUATIONS. A METACOGNITIVE APPROACH
2013
When approaching and solving educational problems, those who are about to start a teaching profession, need to involve strategies in order to appropriately answer complex problems characterizing educational situations. We examine one way to promote specific transfer of general skills: a methodology entails the elicitation, analysis and inclusion of case-study as a primary form of instructional support while learning to solve problems. This approach is referred to as analysis of cases drawn from real-world educative contexts in order to help students develop problem solving skill. Learning is supported by conversations and stories about problematic and difficult cases. In this paper we intro…
The business plan as a project: an evaluation of its predictive capability for business success
2012
Although there is extensive research aimed at identifying the main success factors for new ventures, efforts directed at evaluating the real effect of the existence and quality of a business plan on a firm's survival chances have been limited. This study attempts to fill this gap by analyzing to what extent the quality of a business plan, measured according to its economic, financial and organizational viability, constitutes a good predictor of business survival; and how other variables related to the characteristics of the entrepreneur and the business can affect the predictive capability of the model under consideration. Hypotheses are tested using data collected from 2142 service firms. …
Enterprise System Implementation in a Franchise Context: An Action Case Study
2015
Abstract This research paper reports on a study focusing on a franchise relationship that utilizes an enterprise system (ES) to optimize its supply chain. The ES is in its post-implementation phase; however, the franchisee has challenges with inventory management due to poor data quality, which causes problems with vendor analysis and revenue control. An action case study was carried out to identify and diagnose the source of the problem, and interventions were implemented and evaluated. The findings demonstrate that several of the challenges related to poor data quality in the supply chain were influenced by problems of a socio-technical character. These included a lack of understanding of…
Experimental Command and Control Center for Crisis and Disaster Management: A Living-Lab Approach
2021
The living-lab is a planned research infrastructure that includes user involvement and the co-design process. This article presents an overview of the innovative experimental control room for crisis management that adopts this living-lab approach in all research co-creation activities. The aims of this paper are threefold: (1) To study possible control room research methods, focus areas, and technologies that can be tailored to the living-lab approach; (2) To illustrate and share experience on the possibilities to tailor an experimental command and control center as a living-lab. (3) To explore the features to fulfill to maximize the benefit of the living-lab for all intended audiences. By …
Designing dynamic performance management systems to foster SME competitiveness according to a sustainable development perspective: empirical evidence…
2015
The role of performance management (PM) systems has become crucial for steering small-medium enterprises (SMEs) to successfully compete during the ongoing critical economic transition. To improve decision-maker strategic learning processes, traditional PM frameworks need to be combined with system dynamics (SD) modelling. This paper shows how to design and use a dynamic performance management (DPM) approach to assess and support SMEs competitiveness according to a sustainable development perspective. The emerging framework is applied to a real case of an Italian small business to analyse the empirical effectiveness of the approach hereby suggested.
Supporting start-up business model design through system dynamics modelling
2017
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore how system dynamics (SD) modelling can provide a methodological support to business model (BM) design with the intent to better communicate business strategy and manage performance. Design/methodology/approach After a literature review of the field and an analysis of the strengths and limitations of conventional BM frameworks, the paper illustrates and discusses an approach that combines such a framework with SD modelling. A single-case study design was selected to explore the implications and limitations of using this combined approach to business modelling. Findings The methodological support provided by SD to BM design may effectively impr…
ERP lifecycle: When to retire your ERP system?
2011
Published version of a chapter in the book: Enterprise information systems, vol 219, part 3, 168-177. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-24358-5_17 A lot of research has been undertaken focusing on ERP systems lifecycles, but very little paid attention to retirement. ERP retirement means the replacement of an ERP with another. The aim of this research paper is to investigate why and when should organizations retire their ERP systems. A convenience case study of an SME has been selected from Egypt. The case study under investigation has retired their local ERP system and replaced it with SAP ERP. Results of our analysis indicated that reasons of retirem…
