A Notation for Modeling Jason-Like BDI Agents

2012

The design and development of a large Multi Agent System (MAS) is a complex and difficult activity where a proper modeling notation may offer a significant contribution to the formulation of the best solution. The support provided by a specific CASE tool can significantly contribute to make the chosen approach technically valid and it is also a fundamental element of a feasible development strategy. The present work reports a UML profile and the related graphical notation for describing a MAS based on the Jason meta model. Moreover a specific CASE tool has been developed for supporting MASs design and automatic code generation. The proposed notation is shown in details using a classical exa…

Aspectes sintàctics de l'occità antic comparats amb els del català

2006

The existence of a two cases declension system in medieval Occitan, which lacked in Catalan, was one of the most remarkable differences between both languages. This distinction arises when comparing the homilies from Tortosa, in Occitan, to the ones from Organyà, which are the Catalan translation from Occitan texts.

OVERTURE Love Love is a Pink Cake or Queering Chopin in Times of Homophobia

2021

An introduction to the three essays included in this section. The article highlights the right to know whether Chopin was gay and contextualizes this inquiry in a very long and pervasive historiographical tradition, essentially twohundred years long, dedicated to examine Chopin sexual orientation, on the one hand, and on the other the more recent tradition of queering western classical music composers. The main point is not to demonstrate categorically that Chopin was ?gay? (a relative, modern identity marker in any case) but rather to highlight the discourses that have presented him as unequivocally heterosexual.

The Average State Complexity of the Star of a Finite Set of Words Is Linear

2008

We prove that, for the uniform distribution over all sets Xof m(that is a fixed integer) non-empty words whose sum of lengths is n, $\mathcal{D}_X$, one of the usual deterministic automata recognizing X*, has on average $\mathcal{O}(n)$ states and that the average state complexity of X*is i¾?(n). We also show that the average time complexity of the computation of the automaton $\mathcal{D}_X$ is $\mathcal{O}(n\log n)$, when the alphabet is of size at least three.

Min-max control of uncertain multi-inventory systems with multiplicative uncertainties

2001

In this note, we consider production-distribution systems with buffer and capacity constraints. For such systems, we assume that the model is not known exactly. More precisely, the entries of the matrix representing the system structure may be affine functions of some uncertain time-varying parameters that take values within assigned bounds. We give stabilizability conditions that can be checked, in principle, by solving a min-max problem on the surface of the state-space (buffer level space) unit ball. Then, we consider a special case in which each uncertain parameter affects a single column of the system matrix and is independent of all the other ones. In this case, we propose a mixed int…

What limit the research productivity of universities? A case study of a Chinese university

2019

In the era of knowledge economy, university plays an important role in the development of community. Generally, universities are responsible for three missions, i.e. teaching, research and social service. Among them, research lunes at the centre, which provides latest intellectual products for teaching on one hand, and supports social service with advanced practices on the other hand. Critical and influential as it is, after investigation we found that the research productivity of the leading research universities in China is quite stable and thus may not meet the expectation of stakeholders. To address this issue, first we conduct an unstructured interview to conclude the limiting factors …

Fingernails - foreign objects in root canal: a case report

2011

Foreign objects in the pulp chamber or root canal are not unusual findings in patients undergoing root canal treatments in which canals have been left open for drainage. Detailed case history, clinical and radiographic examinations are necessary to come to a conclusion about the nature, size, location of the foreign body and difficulty involved in its retrieval. This kind of situation is more likely to occur in children due to their habit of placing foreign objects in the mouth. The foreign objects may act as a potential source of infection and may later lead to a painful condition. Reported here is an unusual case of metallic pin along with multiple nail pieces retrieved from root canal of…

Unusual case of continuous urinary dribbling in a young female due to unknown complex urogenital malformation: magnetic resonance features

2020

Congenital anomalies of kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) occur in up to 3.2% of infants, and in almost one third of cases they are associated to genital aberrations. DMSA renal scintigraphy is considered the gold standard in CAKUT patients, to assess renal function, depict and locate ectopic kidney and to guide eventual surgical management. Recent cases have shown the noticeable limit of scintigraphy in detecting poorly functional renal moieties and associated genital anomalies; thus leading to a substantial delay in therapy, and, in females, to severe uro-gynecological complications. We herein describe a case of a young girl with unusual urinary dribbling, where DSMA scintigraphy was not d…

Non-periodic Discrete Splines

2015

Discrete Splines with different spans were introduced in Sect. 3.3.1. This chapter focuses on a special case of discrete splines whose spans are powers of 2. These splines are discussed in more detail. The Zak transform provides an integral representation of such splines. Discrete exponential splines are introduced. Generators of the discrete-spline spaces are described whose properties are similar to properties of polynomial-spline spaces generators. Interpolating discrete splines provide efficient tools for upsampling 1D and 2D signals. An algorithm for explicit computation of discrete splines is described.

The impact of COVID ‐19 on franchising in emerging markets: An example from Brazil

2020

The outbreak of COVID‐19, the disease caused by the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus, has had significant economic, political, and social consequences worldwide. The franchising sector, consisting mostly of retail and service businesses, is an example of an industry that has been deeply affected. The experiences of franchising stakeholders in Brazil highlight the strengths of the franchising model in such situations. This investigation, based on primary data from webinars with food service, education, retail, and business‐to‐business service companies in Brazil, coupled with reports from commercial and franchising entities, reveals how the COVID‐19 outbreak has affected the franchising sector. It illustrat…
