High flow nasal therapy in perioperative medicine: from operating room to general ward

Abstract Background High flow nasal therapy (HFNT) is a technique in which humidified and heated gas is delivered to the airways through the nose via small nasal prongs at flows that are higher than the rates generally applied during conventional oxygen therapy. The delivered high flow rates combine mixtures of air and oxygen and enable different inspired oxygen fractions ranging from 0.21 to 1. Cavity solitons in optical systems have been studied for two decades in a large variety of optical systems. In principle, bidirectional lasers can emit only unidirectionally in steady state, as the two-mode solution (non null steady state in the two possible emission directions) is an unstable solution (winner-takes-all competition prevents the bidirectional cw emission). Erbium doped optical fiber lasers for magnetic field sensing

In this work two erbium doped optical fiber laser configurations for magnetic field measurement are implemented and compared. The first laser is set-up in a loop configuration and requires only a single FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating), acting as mirror. A second laser employs a simpler linear cavity configuration but requires two FBGs with spectral overlap to form the laser cavity. A bulk magnetostrictive material made of Terfenol-D is attached to the laser FBGs enabling modulation of its operation wavelength by the magnetic field. Supercontinuum Q-switched Yb fiber laser using an intracavity microstructured fiber

We report on an intracavity configuration for supercontinuum generation in a Q-switched Yb fiber laser. The supercontinuum laser includes a section of microstructured fiber within the Q-switched laser cavity. With 380 mW of pump power, the supercontinuum laser can emit broadband pulses of 6 microJ energy and 10 ns temporal width, at repetition rates from few hertz up to 2 kHz. The supercontinuum spectrum spans over a wavelength range in excess of 1.4 microm.

Evolutionary algorithm for fiber laser in ultrashort pulse regime

This thesis deals with the generation of ultrashort pulses within a fiber laser cavity through the automatic optimization of its parameters by an evolutionary algorithm. The interest of this subject comes from the difficulty to systematically explore dynamics in a large domain of experimental parameters. Three canals in the mesial root of mandibular first permanent molars: a clinical study

Traditional teaching of the anatomy of root canals in different teeth can lead clinicians into the misguided belief that a predetermined number of root canals is always present in any given tooth. A new understanding of the root canal system has enabled the location of additional canals. Results of the clinical study of 760 first mandibular molars, showed that 20 (2.6 per cent) had three canals in the mesial root.
