Stabilizing and controlling domain walls and dark-ring cavity solitons.

2009

We demonstrate two alternative techniques for controlling and stabilizing domain walls (DW) in phase-sensitive, nonlinear optical resonators. The first of them uses input pumps with spatially modulated phase and can be applied also to dark-ring cavity solitons. An optical memory based on the latter is demonstrated. Here the physical mechanism of control relies on the advection caused to any feature by the phase gradients. The second technique uses a plane wave input pump with holes of null intensity across its transverse plane, which are able to capture DWs. Here the physical mechanism of control is of topological nature. When distributed as a regular array, these holes delimit spatial opti…

Dynamic path length changes in all-fiber mirrors: Transmission modulation

1995

Abstract In this paper, we present a technique to modulate the transmission of an all-fiber mirror. This technique is based on the phase modulation of the light in the fiber loop, combined with the time delay between the clockwise and anticlockwise propagating beams. Using Jones calculus, a theoretical analysis has been carried out to describe the effects of static polarization changes and a dynamic phase modulation. An experimental all-fiber optical mirror has been constructed, and using a 1–MHz piezoelectric disc as the phase modulator, we demonstrate that it is possible to achieve either a 1–MHz or 2–MHz transmission modulation by adjusting the polarization state.

Influence of possible reflections on the operation of European ITER gyrotrons

2010

The theory describing the influence of reflection s on operation of gyrotrons with radial output is used for evaluating the effect of reflections on the operation of the ITER 170 GHz 2 MW coaxial cavity gyrotron, which is under development, and the 170 GHz 1 MW cylindrical cavity gyrotron as a fall back solution.

Complex temperature dependence of coupling and dissipation of cavity magnon polaritons from millikelvin to room temperature

2018

Hybridized magnonic-photonic systems are key components for future information processing technologies such as storage, manipulation or conversion of data both in the classical (mostly at room temperature) and quantum (cryogenic) regime. In this work, we investigate a YIG sphere coupled strongly to a microwave cavity over the full temperature range from $290\,\mathrm{K}$ down to $30\,\mathrm{mK}$. The cavity-magnon polaritons are studied from the classical to the quantum regime where the thermal energy is less than one resonant microwave quanta, i.e. at temperatures below $1\,\mathrm{K}$. We compare the temperature dependence of the coupling strength $g_{\rm{eff}}(T)$, describing the streng…

Dissipative soliton pulsations with periods beyond the laser cavity round trip time

2005

We review recent results on periodic pulsations of the soliton parameters in a passively mode-locked fiber laser. Solitons change their shape, amplitude, width and velocity periodically in time. These pulsations are limit cycles of a dissipative nonlinear system in an infinite-dimensional phase space. Pulsation periods can vary from a few to hundreds of round trips. We present a continuous model of a laser as well as a model with parameter management. The results of the modeling are supported with experimental results obtained using a fiber laser. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

Entanglement between two superconducting qubits via interaction with nonclassical radiation

2003

We propose a scheme to physically interface superconducting nano-circuits and quantum optics. We address the transfer of quantum information between systems having different physical natures and defined in Hilbert spaces of different dimensions. In particular, we investigate the transfer of the entanglement initially in a non-classical state of a continuous-variable system to a pair of superconducting charge qubits. This set-up is able to drive an initially separable state of the qubits into an almost pure, highly entangled state suitable for quantum information processing.

Cross-Kerr nonlinearity in optomechanical systems

2015

We consider the response of a nanomechanical resonator interacting with an electromagnetic cavity via a radiation pressure coupling and a cross-Kerr coupling. Using a mean field approach we solve the dynamics of the system, and show the different corrections coming from the radiation pressure and the cross-Kerr effect to the usually considered linearized dynamics.

Optical implementability of the two-dimensional Quantum Walk

2005

We propose an optical cavity implementation of the two-dimensional coined quantum walk on the line. The implementation makes use of only classical resources, and is tunable in the sense that a large number of different unitary transformations can be implemented by tuning some parameters of the device.

Quantum Computation with Generalized Binomial States in Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics

2008

We study universal quantum computation in the cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) framework exploiting two orthonormal two-photon generalized binomial states as qubit and dispersive interactions of Rydberg atoms with high-$Q$ cavities. We show that an arbitrary qubit state may be generated and that controlled-NOT and 1-qubit rotation gates can be realized via standard atom-cavity interactions.

Dissipative structures in optomechanical cavities

2012

Motivated by the increasing interest in the properties of multimode optomechanical devices, here we study a system in which a driven mode of a large-area optical cavity is despersively coupled to a deformable mechanical element. Two different models naturally appear in such scenario, for which we predict the formation of periodic patterns, localized structures (cavity solitons), and domain walls, among other complex nonlinear phenomena. Further, we propose a realistic design based on intracavity membranes where our models can be studied experimentally. Apart from its relevance to the field of nonlinear optics, the results put forward here are a necessary step towards understanding the quant…
