Evaluating fish assemblages associated with gas platforms: Evidence from a visual census technique and experimental fishing surveys
2010
Fish assemblages associated with extractive platforms were surveyed, for the first time, using traditional fishing surveys (bottom gill net) and an underwater visual census (UVC) technique in order to test the effectiveness and to identify strengths and weaknesses of both methods. The study was carried out during three seasons at two offshore gas platforms (Eleonora and Squalo C) located in the central Adriatic Sea. Both methods recorded a similar number of fish species although with only eight species in common, thus supplying complementary information and a good estimate of the total fish species richness (39) associated with these gas platforms. The use of innovative techniques, such as …
Indagine comparativa sulla popolazione nidificante di Fratino Charadrius alexandrinus (Aves, Charadriiformes) nelle saline della Provincia di Trapani
2016
Comparative survey on the population of the Kentish plover Charadrius alexandrinus in the salt pans of Trapani province. This paper deals with a 2016 census of the breeding population of the Kentish plover in the saltpans of trapani and of the Stagnone di marsala. In the same area a previous census of this species was carried out forty years ago by Massa (1977). the comparison between data collected in the 1970s and in 2016 reveals that the population of the Kentish plover has been dramatically declining, with 70% decrease in the overall area (ca. 1,230 ha). Although responsibile for an additional 8% reduction of wetlands in the last few decades, direct human intervention is not likely to b…
Summer aggregation of common eagle ray, Myliobatis aquila (Chondrichthyes: Myliobatidae), in the Marine Protected Area of the Egadi Islands (southwes…
2021
Author(s): Grancagnolo, Desiree; Arculeo, Marco | Abstract: We report for the first time in Italian waters a periodic and frequent presence of a summer aggregation of common eagle ray Myliobatis aquila in the island of Marettimo (southwestern Tyrrhenian Sea), which is part of the Marine Protected Area of the Egadi Islands. These aggregation could be related to different phenomena such as reproduction, feeding or simply as a transit zone.
Night surveys and smell, a mixed method to detect colonies of storm petrel Hydrobates pelagicus
2012
Storm-petrels usually breed in sites difficult to access, making it hard to estimate the number of individuals in a colony or even the presence of a colony. After several years of study in the main colony and diurnal surveys to other caves of the island, we planned an extensive night survey for identifying previously unknown colonies. In the breeding season of 2011 we found 5 new colonies of storm petrels (Hydrobates pelagicus) at Marettimo island, increasing the estimation of the population on this island to approximately 3000 breeding pairs. We propose the use of mixed methods to locate new colonies, as they can be found by the characteristic smell of storm petrels, but under windy condit…

Marine caves of the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea: a First Census of Benthic Biodiversity
2017
This is the first paper documenting research on a selection of marine caves located along the coast of Capo Milazzo in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea. Three submarine and one semi-submerged caves were surveyed and sampled using underwater photo sampling. Surveys have only taken into account the sessile species belonging to the main taxa: Porifera, Anthozoa, Bryozoa and Polychaeta. Diversity indices and abundances were calculated for three sections within each explored cave: the Entrance Zone, Intermediate Zone and Bottom Zone. The richest group was Porifera with 21 taxa, followed by cnidarians, (Anthozoa), with 8 taxa, Polychaeta (5 taxa), and Bryozoa (5 taxa). Among Porifera, the presence of …
Fish diversity associated with gas platforms: Evaluation of two underwater visual census techniques
2007
The communicative power of an extreme territory – the Italian island of Pantelleria and its passito wine
2018
Purpose This paper aims to examine how Pantelleria’s wineries communicate the extreme territory of Pantelleria through its passito wine and whether this may be a value added for consumers. Specifically examines which dimensions of communication are effectively used by wineries to stimulate, in wine consumers, emotions that link passito wine with the territory of Pantelleria. Design/methodology/approach All websites of wineries producing passito wine in Pantelleria were analyzed using the adaptation, goal-attainment, integration and latent pattern maintenance (AGIL) scheme for measuring communication dimensions. Findings Results suggest that wineries and stakeholders should apply territory-…
DISCOVER POTENTIAL SEGMENTS OF WINE SHOPS BASING ON SALES STRATEGIES BY CLUSTER ANALYSIS
2015
The HORECA channel is a very important for promoting high-quality wines. In fact, through this distribution channel, consumers can experience wines before purchasing, taste them also with foods and receive additional information. Market segmentation is very crucial for businesses; therefore specific criteria must be applied for a successful segmentation. In this study wine shop segmentation was carried out by explorative hierarchical Cluster Analysis in order to discover potential segments of wine shops and wine bars based on their sales strategies. Moreover, wine shop(s) role in dissemination of information about quality wines was investigated. A census was carried out in a selected Italia…
Drivers of Agglomeration: geography VS. History
2009
This paper focuses on the influence of two classical drivers of population agglomeration: geography and history. Geography is identified by two co-ordinates: coastal position and altitude. The prominence of history is also captured by two characteristics: the initial size of the municipalities, and their status as the administrative centre of the area. In first instance we examine localization patterns, at a small geographical scale, according to these characteristics and present empirical evidence of the progressive population concentration along the coast, on the plains and in the regional (provincial) capitals; a process that has not finished in the present days. Next, we show that both …
