Teacher leadership repertoires in the context of early childhood education team meetings in Finland
2019
This study investigates teacher leadership in Early Childhood Education (ECE) settings in Finland. We used discursive analysis to investigate repertoires of teacher leaders during weekly team meetings organized by staff teams. In Finland, a staff team usually comprises of an ECE teacher - who is the team leader, and two childcare nurses. In this study ECE teachers are understood as being teacher leaders (Fairman & McKenzie, 2012). The study identifies four repertoires of teacher leadership: 1. collaborative teacher leadership; 2. supportive teacher leadership; 3. professional expertise; and 4. legitimation. Understanding teacher leadership is fundamental to enacting pedagogical leadership i…
L’ambiente d’apprendimento nella prima infanzia alla luce della prospettiva Montessoriana: un’indagine in Sicilia
2019
The following paper focus on the growing interest in structuring the learning environment in order to promote the psycho-social-attitudinal development of the infant. The montessorian approach enhances a child-friendly environment. It facilitates active participation in the child’s daily life, thus contributing towards a higher level of independence, self-awareness, self-esteem and self-evaluation. The survey conducted in June 2019 shows that in Sicily less people are adopting montessorian approach nowadays into the early childhood structures.
Lastentarhanopettajat liikunnan suunnittelijoina
2014
Tiivistelmä. Piiroinen, Reetta & Saari, Saila. 2014. Lastentarhanopettajat liikunnan suunnittelijoina. Varhaiskasvatustieteen kandidaatintutkielma. Kasvatustie- teiden laitos. Jyväskylän yliopisto. 50 sivua + liitteet. Tutkimuksemme on tärkeä, koska varhaiskasvatusikäisten lasten liikuntaa on tutkittu vähän. Varhaiskasvatusikäisten lasten liikuntatutkimukset painottuvat lasten aktiivisuuden ja terveysvaikutusten tutkimiseen, joten on hyödyllistä tutkia lastentarhanopettajien toimintaa lasten liikunnan toteuttajina. Tutkimuksemme tavoitteena oli selvittää, miten lastentarhanopettajat suunnittelevat liikuntatuokioita lapsiryhmässä. Tutkimuksen aineistonhankinnan toteutimme tekemällä interneti…
Language, Childhood, and Fire: How We Learned to Love Sharing Stories.
2022
Stories do not fossilize. Thus, exploring tales shared during prehistory, the longest part of human history inevitably becomes speculative. Nevertheless, various attempts have been made to find a more scientifically valid way into our deep human past of storytelling. Following the social brain hypothesis, we suggest including into the theory of human storytelling more fine-grained and evidence-based findings (from archaeology, the cognitive sciences, and evolutionary psychology) about the manifold exaptation and adaptation, genetic changes, and phenotypic plasticity in the deep human past, which all shaped the emergence of storytelling in hominins. We identify three preconditions for humans…

Longitudinal Associations of First-grade Teaching with Reading in Early Primary School
2019
The present study examined the longitudinal associations between first-grade teaching practices and children's reading skills development from Grade 1 to Grade 3. Using the Early Childhood Classroom Observation Measure (ECCOM), the teaching practices of 32 Finnish teachers were observed in Grade 1. Students' (N = 359) word recognition and sentence reading skills were assessed yearly from Grade 1 to Grade 3. The person-oriented analysis identified three profiles of teaching practices in Grade 1: child-centred teaching style, teacher-directed teaching style, and a mixed child-centred and teacher-directed teaching style. Furthermore, the results showed that children whose Grade 1 teachers used…
Study protocol: the Norwegian Triple-S Cohort Study - establishing a longitudinal health survey of children and adolescents with experiences of maltr…
2021
Abstract Background Child maltreatment is prevalent and associated with both short- and long-term health problems. Previous studies have established child maltreatment as a risk factor for a wide range of problems over the life course such as mental- and somatic health problems, self-harm, alcohol- and drug abuse and decreased work-life participation. Still, there are few large and well-conducted longitudinal studies focusing on describing prevalence and identifying risk factors and long-term consequences of child maltreatment. The purpose of the current study is to recruit a large number of children and adolescents exposed to maltreatment and follow them long-term. Methods/design The curre…
Cardiac phenotype in ATP1A3-related syndromes: A multicentre cohort study
2020
ObjectiveTo define the risks and consequences of cardiac abnormalities in ATP1A3-related syndromes.MethodsPatients meeting clinical diagnostic criteria for rapid-onset dystonia-parkinsonism (RDP), alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC), and cerebellar ataxia, areflexia, pes cavus, optic atrophy, and sensorineural hearing loss (CAPOS) with ATP1A3 genetic analysis and at least 1 cardiac assessment were included. We evaluated the cardiac phenotype in an Atp1a3 knock-in mouse (Mashl+/−) to determine the sequence of events in seizure-related cardiac death.ResultsNinety-eight patients with AHC, 9 with RDP, and 3 with CAPOS (63 female, mean age 17 years) were included. Resting ECG abnormalities…
Cost effectiveness analysis of childhood obesity primary prevention programmes: a systematic review
2022
Background. Childhood obesity is associated with enormous health consequences and costs to society. This study aims to systematically review the studies on Cost Effectiveness Analysis (CEA) of primary prevention programmes of childhood obesity, discussing the gaps and providing recommendations for future research. Methods. All the studies on the cost effectiveness evaluation of primary prevention of obesity among children were included. Studies were retrieved from MEDLINE and Google Scholar, up to 31st March 2012, with only English language papers being eligible. The quality of the retrieved studies was evaluated by using the Drummond scale. Re…
