BROILER CHICKENS AND THEIR HEALTH STATUS IN FARM: WINE WASTE, AN ADDED VALUE ON FEEDING
2023
Various key economic sectors of the National and Sicilian economy, in addition to contributing to the economic growth also cause a considerable production of waste which today are a problem both for companies then for the environment. For this reason, there is considerable interest in this waste and in the possibility of their reuse to extract bioactive molecules with added value, all in accordance with the objectives of the Blue Economy. In this regard, it has already been demonstrated that from the production waste of various economic sectors it is possible to obtain bioactive molecules with anticancer, antimicrobial, cosmetic, antioxidant and nutraceutical properties (Mauro et al., 2022)…
Proceeding Book of 12th European Symposium on Religious art, Restoration & Conservation
2022
Fundamental contribution to filling out the condition reports of the work of arts involved in temporary exhibitions is provided by non-invasive investigation techniques. Investigation, carried out before and after the movement, allow to collect objective data to monitoring the surface or structural alterations and defining the state of conservation, representing an important moment of deepening of knowledge. Generally, these aspects often are left to photographic documentation and observations by conservators and curators. An example of good practice is represented by the case of the Saint Gregory Polyptych (Antonello da Messina, 1473) belonging to the Regional Museum of Messina (Italy). Th…
Low mimosine content and nutrient-rich foliage of two Leucaena leucocephala varieties: a potential fodder resource in Mediterranean agroforestry syst…
2022
Leucaena leucocephala is worldwide used for wood production, reforestation and for feeding livestock. To assess the potential use of leucaena for animal nutrition, we analysed the composition of methanolic extracts of leaf samples of two varieties occurring in Sicily (Mediterranean area), also determining the presence of mimosine.
Photocatalytic nano-composite architectural lime mortar for degradation of urban pollutants under solar and visible (interior) light
2017
Abstract Recent advances in nano-technology and nano-additives can give enhanced properties to natural hydraulic lime (NHL), creating a multifunctional material. We have prepared a novel nanocomposite, made of a commercial mortar with 1 wt% and 5 wt% added titania nanoparticles (NPs). These TiO 2 NPs are themselves doped with 1 mol% silver, to give the material enhanced photocatalytic and antimicrobial properties. The Ag-doped TiO 2 NPs were made from a simple, costs effective, aqueous green nanosynthesis process, and the end material only contains 0.01–0.05% Ag. As this mortar is intended to both combat atmospheric pollution, and create more durable/lower maintenance building facades (plas…
ytterbium nanoparticles: properties, recent synthesis, developments and prespectives
2011
Material science interest is more and more directed to the synthesis and characterization of nano-sized particles. This interest is justified by the fact that the reduction of the particle size of a given material to the nanometer scale causes the rising up of exotic properties that are not present in the bulk state due to size-dependent quantum effects and huge increase of the interfacial species. Further striking features can be gained by controlling nanoparticle shape or through the building up of spatially ordered mono-, bi- and three-dimensional nanoparticle arrays. Then, the wise selection of the nanoparticle synthetic strategy offers the possibility of preparing a wide class of novel…

Characterization and antimicrobial activity of the volatile components of the flowers of Magydaris tomentosa (Desf.) DC. collected in Sicily and Alge…
2014
The essential oils of the flowers of Magydaris tomentosa (Desf.) DC. (Apiaceae) collected in Sicily (MSi) and Algeria (MAl), respectively, were obtained by hydrodistillation, and their compositions were analysed. The analyses allowed the identification and quantification of 23 components in MSi and 60 compounds in MAl, respectively, showing a very different profile in the composition of the two populations. The main components of MSi were cembrene (28.2%), α-springene (17.5%) and β-springene (14.8%), also present in MAl but in lesser amount (0.4%, 1.8% and 0.9%, respectively), whereas the principal constituents of MAl were (E)-nerolidol (35.4%), α-costol (13.3%) and β-costol (6.8%). Both MS…
