QSAR models for tyrosinase inhibitory activity description applying modern statistical classification techniques: A comparative study

2010

Abstract Cluster analysis (CA), Linear and Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (L(Q)DA), Binary Logistic Regression (BLR) and Classification Tree (CT) are applied on two datasets for description of tyrosinase inhibitory activity from molecular structures. The first set included 701 tyrosinase inhibitors (TI) that are used for performance of inhibitory and non-inhibitory activity and the second one is for potency estimation of active compounds. 2D TOMOCOMD-CARDD atom-based quadratic indices are computed as molecular descriptors. CA is used to “rational” design of training (TS) and prediction set (PS) but it shows of not being adequate as classification technique. On the first data, the overall a…

Predicting Proteasome Inhibition using Atomic Weighted Vector and Machine Learning

2018

Ubiquitin/Proteasome System (UPS) is a highly regulated mechanism of intracellular protein degradation and turnover. Through the concerted actions of a series of enzymes, proteins are marked for proteasomal degradation by being linked to the polypeptide co-factor, ubiquitin. The UPS participates in a wide array of biological functions such as antigen presentation, regulation of gene transcription and the cell cycle, and activation of NF-κB. Some researchers have applied QSAR method and machine learning in the study of proteasome inhibition (EC50(µmol/L)), such as: the analysis of proteasome inhibition prediction, in the prediction of multi-target inhibitors of UPP and in the prediction of p…

A query language for medical statistical analysis

1991

While standard query languages support primarily the definition of single queries, in the evaluation of medical studies one usually formulates large sets of interdependent queries. A set of this type is called an integrated transaction. Our system for the definition of integrated transactions is based on the observation that in medicine a large number of statistical evaluations is founded on a conceptional model that can be structured as a tree. We describe a screen oriented tree editor for the relational data base system DBase and report on our experience with its application in the evaluation of the success rate of PTCA interventions.

A survey on features of allergic rhinitis in children

2013

Objective: A number of epidemiologic studies evaluated the prevalence of allergic rhinitis (AR), but few data are available on its different clinical presentations. We addressed this survey to assess the features of AR in children and adolescents. Methods: Thirty-five centers in Italy included 2623 pediatric patients with rhinitis, of whom 2319 suffered from AR, while 304 had other kinds of rhinitis. For each patient a standardized questionnaire was filled in, including ARIA classification, the duration of symptoms, the allergen identified as clinically relevant, the co-morbidities, the kind of treatment, the response to treatment, the satisfaction with the treatment, and the feasibility of…

Archaeometric study of ceramic figurines from the Maya settlement of La Blanca (Petén, Guatemala)

2014

Abstract In this article, analytical results will be presented and discussed regarding a selected set of figurines from the ancient Maya settlement of La Blanca in Peten, Guatemala. The objective is to characterize the ceramic material by two analytical complementary techniques: X-ray diffraction (XRD) and total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF). The data obtained by means of both XRD and TXRF were compared and analyzed by multivariate statistical techniques in order to obtain sample groups according to their chemical composition. The results of this archaeometric study have been compared to those that have been obtained through macroscopic characterization by means of the traditional cl…

From synoptic to interdecadal variability in southern African rainfall: toward a unified view across time scales.

2018

International audience; During the austral summer season (November–February), southern African rainfall, south of 20°S, has been shown to vary over a range of time scales, from synoptic variability (3–7 days, mostly tropical temperate troughs) to interannual variability (2–8 years, reflecting the regional effects of El Niño–Southern Oscillation). There is also evidence for variability at quasi-decadal (8–13 years) and interdecadal (15–28 years) time scales, linked to the interdecadal Pacific oscillation and the Pacific decadal oscillation, respectively. This study aims to provide an overview of these ranges of variability and their influence on regional climate and large-scale atmospheric c…

How do tropical temperate troughs form and develop over southern Africa?

2014

16 pages ; Corrigendum Figure (Macron C, B Pohl, Y Richard & M Bessafi (2014) CORRIGENDUM. Journal of Climate, 27, 5198-5199. doi:10.1175/JCLI-D-14-00319.1); International audience; This paper aims at separating the respective influences of tropical and midlatitude variability on the development and life cycle of tropical temperate troughs (TTTs) over southern Africa in austral summer (November-February). Cluster analysis is applied to 1971-2000 40-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40) daily outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) anomalies to identify TTTs and monitor tropical convection. The same analysis applied to the zonal wind stretching deformation at 200 hPa (ZDEF) characterizes midlatitude trans…

Periodic Classification of Local Anaesthetics (Procaine Analogues)

2006

Algorithms for classification are proposed based on criteria (information entropyand its production). The feasibility of replacing a given anaesthetic by similar ones in thecomposition of a complex drug is studied. Some local anaesthetics currently in use areclassified using characteristic chemical properties of different portions of their molecules. Many classification algorithms are based on information entropy. When applying theseprocedures to sets of moderate size, an excessive number of results appear compatible withdata, and this number suffers a combinatorial explosion. However, after the equipartitionconjecture, one has a selection criterion between different variants resulting fromc…

3D shape recognition and matching for intelligent computer vision systems

2018

This thesis concerns recognition and matching of 3D shapes for intelligent computer vision systems. It describes two main contributions to this domain. The first contribution is an implementation of a new shape descriptor built on the basis of the spectral geometry of the Laplace-Beltrami operator; we propose an Advanced Global Point Signature (AGPS). This descriptor exploits the intrinsic structure of the object and organizes its information in an efficient way. In addition, AGPS is extremely compact since only a few eigenpairs were necessary to obtain an accurate shape description. The second contribution is an improvement of the wave kernel signature; we propose an optimized wave kernel …

When Economics Faces the Economy: John Bates Clark and the 1914 Antitrust Legislation

2013

The aim of this paper is to analyze John Bates Clark's influence in the passing of the Clayton and Federal Trade Commission Acts of 1914. It is argued that Clark was important to the passage of these acts in two ways. First, he exercised an indirect influence by discussing in academic journals and books problems concerning trusts, combinations, and the measures necessary to preserve the working of competitive markets. At least as importantly, Clark took an active role in the reform movement, both contributing to draft proposals for the amendment of existing antitrust legislation and providing help and advice during the Congressional debates that led to the passage of the FTC and Clayton Act…
