Drugs and the Colon

1983

It is not our intention to review drug effects in the colon, which was done extensively and profoundly by Forth and Rummel1 and Powell.2 Our contribution will present studies of drug effects on physiological absorption and secretion processes obtained in the intact human colon and based on results of intestinal perfusion studies of the whole colon and measurements of transepithelial electrical potential difference (PD) in the rectosigmoid colon. These are at present the practiced and—regarding perfusion studies—most accurate techniques in the hands of clinicians to directly study drug effects on a local dose-response scale in the intact human colon. Since these methods are relatively new an…

L'Exposition Coloniale Internationale de Paris 1931

2009

Between post-colonial and global studies: mobility, government and coexistence in the territories of the Spanish Monarchy in the modern age

2020

After overcoming a predominantly Eurocentric vision, historiography of the late 20th century ventured further into considering the development of dynamics on a planetary scale, embracing the innovative instances and methodological suggestions of Post-Colonial studies, as well as those of World and Global Studies. Whether one accepts the paradigm of “globalisation” or rejects it, like for example, among others, Frederick Cooper – who considers it an empty conceptual shell, devoid of uniformity – it is a matter of fact that social sciences, and history among them, were influenced by it in their heuristic approach at understanding phenomena. In this perspective, and within a dialectic approach…

Joint brood guarding in parent bugs — an experiment on defence against predation

1995

Females of Elasmucha grisea defend their eggs and small nymphs against invertebrate predators. Females sometimes guard their clutches side by side on the same birch leaf. We studied benefits of this joint guarding both in the field and in the laboratory. We found that adjacent females had significantly larger clutches than solitary females. In the laboratory, we studied the effectiveness of joint versus single defence against ant (Formica uralensis) predators. We established female pairs from initially singly guarding females by cutting off pieces of leaves with egg clutches and pasting them beside another female guarding her clutch. In the control group the females with their clutches were…

N-Glycosylation modification of proteins is an early marker of the enterocytic differentiation process of HT-29 cells

1990

International audience; The human colon cancer cell line HT-29 remains totally undifferentiated when glucose is present in the culture medium (HT-29 Glc+), while the same cells may undergo typical enterocytic differentiation after reaching confluence when grown in glucose-deprived medium (HT-29 Glc-). Recently, we demonstrated a deficiency in the overall N-glycan processing in confluent undifferentiated cells, whereas differentiated cells follow a classical pattern of N-glycosylation. The main changes in N-glycosylation observed in confluent undifferentiated cells may be summarised as follows: 1) the conversion of high mannose into complex glycopeptides is greatly decreased; 2) this decreas…

Ant colony optimisation for planning safe escape routes

2013

Published version of a chapter from the volume: Recent Trends in Applied Artificial Intelligence. Also available on SpringerLink: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-38577-3_6 An emergency requiring evacuation is a chaotic event filled with uncertainties both for the people affected and rescuers. The evacuees are often left to themselves for navigation to the escape area. The chaotic situation increases when a predefined escape route is blocked by a hazard, and there is a need to re-think which escape route is safest. This paper addresses automatically finding the safest escape route in emergency situations in large buildings or ships with imperfect knowledge of the hazards. The proposed so…

Becoming Politically Active: Life Courses and the Formation of Capitals among Young People of Migrant Origin in Finland

2020

This article focuses on the life courses of young people of migrant origin who are active in civic and political fields in Finland. The aim is to analyse, from the micro-level life course perspective, the issues in their lives that have helped them to become active. The article draws on empirical data collected using participatory methods. Four young people of migrant origin participated in the research process and contributed to the data analysis. The theoretical framework consists of Bourdieusian concepts of political habitus and emotional, cultural and social capital. The article shows that participants gained strong emotional capital during their childhood, which laid the groundwork for…

Optimal Electrical Distribution Systems Reinforcement Planning Using Gas Micro Turbines by Dynamic Ant Colony Search Algorithm

2007

Distribution systems management is becoming an increasingly complicated issue due to the introduction of new energy trading strategies and new technologies. In this paper, an optimal reinforcement strategy to provide reliable and economic service to customers in a given time frame is investigated. In the new deregulated energy market and considering the incentives coming from the political and economical fields, it is reasonable to consider distributed generation (DG) as a viable option for systems reinforcement. In the paper, the DG technology is considered as a possible solution for distribution systems capacity problems, along several years. Therefore, compound solutions comprising the i…

Fuzzy predictive controller design using ant colony optimization algorithm

2014

In this paper, an approach for designing an adaptive fuzzy model predictive control (AFMPC) based on the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is studied. On-line adaptive fuzzy identification is used to identify the system parameters. These parameters are used to calculate the objective function based on predictive approach and structure of RST control. The optimization problem is solved based on an ACO algorithm, used at the optimization process in AFMPC to calculate a sequence of future RST control actions. The obtained simulation results show that proposed approach provides better results compared with Proportional Integral-Ant Colony Optimization (PI-ACO) controller and adaptive fuzzy model pr…
