Different postischemic protein expression of the GABA_{A} receptor α2 subunit and the plasticity-associated protein MAP1B after treatment with BDNF v…
2009
Purpose Recent data indicate that both brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) exert substantial neuroregenerative effects and improve functional outcome after ischemic stroke. In the present study, we checked for potential differences in the postischemic modulation of various excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitter receptors as well as various marker molecules for structural plasticity by BDNF versus G-CSF. Methods Adult male Wistar rats were subjected to photothrombotic ischemia and subsequently treated with NaCl, BDNF or G-CSF, respectively. After 6 weeks, postischemic protein expression of the NR1, GluR1 and alpha2 subunit of the NMD…
Impact of perioperative transfusions and sepsis on long-term oncologic outcomes after curative colon cancer resection. A retrospective analysis of a …
2020
Objective: Intra-abdominal septic complications (IASC) affect short-term outcomes after surgery for colon cancer. Blood transfusions have been associated with worse short-term results. The role of IASC and blood transfusions on long-term oncologic results is still debated. This study aims to assess the impact of these two variables on survival after curative colon cancer resection. Patients and methods: Retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database of patients who underwent curative surgery for colon cancer at a university hospital, between 1993 and 2010. Cox regression was used to identify the role of IASC and transfusions (alone and combined) on local recurrence (LR), disea…
Global variation in anastomosis and end colostomy formation following left-sided colorectal resection
2019
Background: End colostomy rates following colorectal resection vary across institutions in high-income settings, being influenced by patient, disease, surgeon and system factors. This study aimed to assess global variation in end colostomy rates after left-sided colorectal resection. Methods: This study comprised an analysis of GlobalSurg-1 and -2 international, prospective, observational cohort studies (2014, 2016), including consecutive adult patients undergoing elective or emergency left-sided colorectal resection within discrete 2-week windows. Countries were grouped into high-, middle- and low-income tertiles according to the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI). Factors associ…
Diagnostic accuracy of computed tomographic colonography for the detection of advanced neoplasia in individuals at increased risk of colorectal cance…
2009
CONTEXT: Computed tomographic (CT) colonography has been recognized as an alternative for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in average-risk individuals, but less information is available on its performance in individuals at increased risk of CRC. OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy of CT colonography in detecting advanced colorectal neoplasia in asymptomatic individuals at increased risk of CRC using unblinded colonoscopy as the reference standard. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a multicenter, cross-sectional study. Individuals at increased risk of CRC due to either family history of advanced neoplasia in first-degree relatives, personal history of colorectal adenomas, or positiv…

IL VICERÉ E LA CITTÀ: INTERVENTI DI MARCO ANTONIO II COLONNA A PALERMO E A MESSINA TRA DECORO URBANO, MAGNIFICENZA CIVICA E PUBBLICA UTILITAS
2016
With the arrival in Palermo of vi…
Towards Multilevel Ant Colony Optimisation for the Euclidean Symmetric Traveling Salesman Problem
2015
Ant Colony Optimization ACO metaheuristic is one of the best known examples of swarm intelligence systems in which researchers study the foraging behavior of bees, ants and other social insects in order to solve combinatorial optimization problems. In this paper, a multilevel Ant Colony Optimization MLV-ACO for solving the traveling salesman problem is proposed, by using a multilevel process operating in a coarse-to-fine strategy. This strategy involves recursive coarsening to create a hierarchy of increasingly smaller and coarser versions of the original problem. The heart of the approach is grouping the variables that are part of the problem into clusters, which is repeated until the size…
α-stable distributions for better performance of ACO in detecting damage on not well spaced frequency systems
2014
Abstract In this paper, the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm is modified through α -stable Levy variables and applied to the identification of incipient damage in structural components. The main feature of the proposed optimization is an improved ability, which derives from the heavy tails of the stable random variable, to escape from local minima. This aspect is relevant since the objective function used for damage detection may have many local minima which render very challenging the search of the global minimum corresponding to the damage parameter. As the optimization is performed on the structural response and does not require the extraction of modal components, the method is pa…
On Randomness and Structure in Euclidean TSP Instances: A Study With Heuristic Methods
2021
Prediction of the quality of the result provided by a specific solving method is an important factor when choosing how to solve a given problem. The more accurate the prediction, the more appropriate the decision on what to choose when several solving applications are available. In this article, we study the impact of the structure of a Traveling Salesman Problem instance on the quality of the solution when using two representative heuristics: the population-based Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) and the local search Lin-Kernighan (LK) algorithm. The quality of the result for a solving method is measured by the computation accuracy, which is expressed using the percent error between its soluti…
