Degeneration of a sex-limited chromosome to produce heterogamety is a common, perhaps unavoidable, feature of sex-chromosome evolution. Cancer complexity is consequence of genomic instability leading to aneuploidy. We hypothesize that dosage compensation of critical genes arise from systems-level properties for cancer cells to withstand the negative effects of aneuploidy. We developed a computational platform to identify a network of miRNAs and transcription factors interacting with candidate dosage-compensated genes using NCI-60 multi-omic data. A heuristic model-based approach for compensating wind effects in ski jumping.

Wind influences the jump length in ski jumping, which raises questions about the fairness. To counteract the wind problem, the International Ski Federation has introduced a wind compensation system in 2009: time-averaged wind velocity components tangential to the landing slope are obtained from several sites along the landing slope, and these data are used in a linear statistical model for estimating the jump length effect of wind. This is considered in the total score of the ski jump. However, it has been shown that the jump length effect estimates can be inaccurate and misleading. A circularly polarized wideband high gain patch antenna for wireless power transfer

This article deals with a microstrip patch antenna working at 868 MHz, suitable for the radio frequency wireless power transfer and energy harvesting applications. The proposed monolithic antenna is compact, lightweight and it is printed on a thick substrate in order to maximize the total gain in the broadside direction. The antenna radiates at 868 MHz with a fractional impedance bandwidth of 5% and it shows a gain of 4.14 dB.
Promoting self-employment: Does it create more employment and business activity?

International audience; We assess the economic impact of reforms promoting self-employment in the three countries that have implemented such reforms since the early 2000s: the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and France. To that end, we use an unbalanced cross country-industry dataset of 4,226 observations, including 12 OECD countries and 20 market industries, over the 1995-2016 period. We first observe, using country-level data, that the share of self-employed workers in total employment is quite stable or declines over the period in all countries in our dataset, except in the three countries where large reforms promoting self-employment have been implemented, and only after these reforms. …

Modelling of a hydro-pneumatic system for heave compensation

This paper presents a mathematical model of the dynamic behaviour of a passive heave compensation system. The main purpose is to develop a model that enables cost-efficient prototyping and testing of the control system in an active heave compensator. The physics are described by first principles, and result in 21 ordinary differential equations. Temperature calculations are included as an option during simulation in order to investigate its effect on the results. Similarly is a non-ideal gas law (Redlich-Kwong equation) implemented and compared to the ideal gas law. Exchange rate and other macroeconomic fluctuations can be considered sources of good or bad “luck” for corporate performance. Incentive effects of performance-based compensation for management may be weakened or biased by macroeconomic influences on remuneration depending on the ability of management to adjust operations. We decompose the changes in CEO-compensation to distinguish between (anticipated-and unanticipated) macroeconomic and “intrinsic” sources.
