UV-Induced Changes of Active Components and Antioxidant Activity in Postharvest Pigeon Pea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] Leaves
2013
In this study, the effect of UV irradiation (UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C) on phytochemicals, total phenolics, and antioxidant activity of postharvest pigeon pea leaves was evaluated. The response of pigeon pea leaves to UV irradiation was phytochemical specific. UV-B and UV-C induced higher levels of phytochemicals, total phenolics, and antioxidant activity in pigeon pea leaves compared with UV-A. Furthermore, UV-B irradiation proved to possess a long-lasting effect on the levels of phenolics and antioxidant activity. After adapting for 48 h at 4 °C following 4 h UV-B irradiation, total phenolics and antioxidant activity were approximately 1.5-fold and 2.2-fold increased from 39.4 mg GAE/g DM and …
Prophylaxis of Non-communicable Diseases: Why fruits and vegetables may be better chemopreventive agents than dietary supplements based on isolated p…
2019
The World Health Organization (WHO) report from 2014 documented that non-communicable socalled civilization diseases such as cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory diseases, cancer or type 2 diabetes are responsible for over 50% of all premature deaths in the world. Research carried out over the past 20 years has provided data suggesting that diet is an essential factor influencing the risk of development of these diseases. The increasing knowledge on chemopreventive properties of certain food ingredients, in particular, those of plant origin, opened the discussion on the possibility to use edible plants or their active components in the prevention of these chronic diseases. Health-pro…
Screening and authentication of herbal formulations based on microextraction-assisted voltammetry of microparticles
2015
A simple solid state electrochemical methodology for screening and authentication of herbal formulations is described. The proposed method is based on the recording of the voltammetric response, in contact with aqueous buffers, of microparticulate films of antioxidant compounds resulting from micro-extraction of dried herbal samples with ethanol or acetone. The obtained voltammetric responses led us to differentiate between diverse active components upon application of bivariate and multivariate chemometric techniques. Resolution of herbal preparations containing two or more components is possible when well-separated voltammetric signals are recorded. In favorable cases, such characteristic…
I risultat…
Application of PGPB Combined with Variable N Doses Affects Growth, Yield-Related Traits, N-Fertilizer Efficiency and Nutritional Status of Lettuce Gr…
2022
Nitrogen (N) fertilization is a crucial agricultural practice for boosting production traits in vegetables. However, N synthetic fertilizers—commonly adopted by farmers—have several counterproductive effects on the environment and on humans. The research was performed to assess the combined influence of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) (Azospirillum brasilense DSM 1690, A. brasilense DSM 2298 and Pseudomonas sp. DSM 25356) and various N fertilization doses (0, 30, 60 or 120 kg ha−1) on growth, yield, quality and nitrogen indices of lettuce in protected cultivation. Plant height, root collar diameter, number of leaves and fresh weight were enhanced by A. brasilense DS…
Discovering hidden brain network responses to naturalistic stimuli via tensor component analysis of multi-subject fMRI data
2021
The study of brain network interactions during naturalistic stimuli facilitates a deeper understanding of human brain function. To estimate large-scale brain networks evoked with naturalistic stimuli, a tensor component analysis (TCA) based framework was used to characterize shared spatio-temporal patterns across subjects in a purely data-driven manner. In this framework, a third-order tensor is constructed from the timeseries extracted from all brain regions from a given parcellation, for all participants, with modes of the tensor corresponding to spatial distribution, time series and participants. TCA then reveals spatially and temporally shared components, i.e., evoked networks with the …
Dual inhibition of cyclooxygenase-1 and 5-lipoxygenase by aerial part of Bupleurum fruticescens methanol extract
2003
The effect of the methanol extract from aerial parts of Bupleurum fruticescens on the release of eicosanoids and hydrolytic enzymes was determined on in vitro cell systems. The extract had a significant effect on 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) activity, inhibiting both LTB4 and 5(S)-HETE production with IC50 values of 112 microg/ml and 95 microg/ml, respectively. At concentrations of 200 microg/ml, the extract also inhibited cyclooxygenase-1 (90%) and elastase activities (54%). The 12-LOX activity in intact platelets was not affected; a fact, which suggests that phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activity, is not modified by the extract.
Volatile constituents of aerial parts of three endemic Centaurea species from Turkey: Centaurea amanicola Hub.-Mor., Centaurea consanguinea DC. and C…
2008
The volatile constituents of the aerial parts of Centaurea amanicola Hub.-Mor., Centaurea consanguinea DC. and Centaurea ptosimopappa Hayek were extracted by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC and GC-MS. Altogether 94 components were identified. Sesquiterpenoids, fatty acids and carbonylic compounds were the most abundant components in the oils. Hexadecanoic acid and (Z,Z )-9,12-octadecadienoic acid were the main fatty acids in all the examined samples, that showed different patterns of composition. The study on the biological activity of the oils showed an action mainly against the Gram-positive pathogens.
Volatile components of Centaurea bracteata and C. pannonica subsp. pannonica growing wild in Croatia.
2010
This paper reports on the volatile components of oils from the aerial parts (CBA) and roots (CBR) of Centaurea bracteata Scop. and aerial parts of C. pannonica (Heuffel) Simonkai subsp. pannonica (CPA), two Asteraceae growing wild in Croatia. The volatile components, obtained by hydrodistillation, were determined by GC-MS analysis. The yields (w/w) of the dried oils were 0.10% (CBA), 0.22% (CBR) and 0.09% (CPA), respectively. A total of 91 compounds were identified accounting for 91.1%, 93.3% and 87.9% of the total oil for CBA, CBR and CPA, respectively. All the samples were characterized mainly by hydrocarbons (7.1-34.1%), fatty acids (9.7-45.9%), and oxygenated sesquiterpenes (15.2-16.6%)…
