Abstract Hyperalkaline mineral springs related to active continental serpentinization are a theme of growing interest since they may contain significant amounts of abiotic gas and have important implications for energy resource exploration, subsurface microbiology and astrobiology. Essential oils (EOs) from medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) are well-known as natural antioxidants. Their addition to extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) can contribute to reducing fat oxidation. The main aim of this study was to improve both food shelf-life and aromatic flavour of EVOO, adding different EOs of Sicilian accessions of common sage, oregano, rosemary and thyme. Polyomino coloring and complex numbers

AbstractUsually polyominoes are represented as subsets of the lattice Z2. In this paper we study a representation of polyominoes by Gaussian integers. Polyomino {(x1,y1),(x2,y2),…,(xs,ys)}⊂Z2 is represented by the set {(x1+iy1),(x2+iy2),…,(xs+iys)}⊂Z[i]. Then we consider functions of type f:P→G from the set P of all polyominoes to an abelian group G, given by f(x,y)≡(x+iy)m(modv), where v is prime in Z[i],1≤m<N(v) (N(v) is the norm of v). Using the arithmetic of the ring Z[i] we find necessary and sufficient conditions for such a function to be a coloring map.

Chemometric Approaches to Analyse the Composition of a Ewe’s Colostrum

Colostrum is a major source of immunity in lambs and, in general, in all newborn ruminants. It allows the transfer of antibodies from the ewe to the lamb, and it becomes the exclusive source of nutrients for a newborn. Among the most significant Pearson correlations, the positive correlation between the Brix refractive index (Brix) and protein (0.90) should be noted. Both parameters (protein percentage and Brix) were then positively correlated with the percentage of fat (0.38 and 0.41), urea (0.81 and 0.67), calcium (0.39 and 0.29), and magnesium (0.58 and 0.59), as well as the yellowness (0.78 and 0.75). Isotopic composition of dissolved sulphate and hydrogen sulphide from some thermal springs of Sicily

Samples of some thermal springs from Sicily have been analysed for the isotopic composition of sulphur-bearing species. The values of δ34S(SO42− (range: +7.3, +31.7‰), δ34S(H2S) (range: −12.2, +27.8), δ34S(S°) (range: +1.9, +24.5) and δ18O(SO42−) (range: −2.5, +23.9) obtained show such a remarkable variability in data as to hypothesize different genetic processes concerning these species. Why Nuclear Ribosomal DNA Spacers (ITS) Tell Different Stories in Quercus

The molecular systematics of Quercus (Fagaceae) was recently assessed by two teams using independently generated ITS sequences. Although the results disagreed in several remarkable features, the phylogenetic trees for either hypothesis were highly supported by bootstrap resampling. We have reanalyzed the ITS sequences used by both teams (eight taxa) to reveal the underlying patterns of this divergence. Within species, conspicuous length and G + C% divergence were evident in most sequence comparisons. Forensics of birds of prey by DNA fingerprinting with 32P-labeled oligonucleotide probes.

Paternity tests on confiscated families of eight species of birds of prey were carried out successfully by DNA fingerprinting with 32P-labeled oligonucleotide probes. Variations in the number of hybridized fragments, depending on the species of birds, are observed using the same probe, as well as differences of polymorphism by hybridizing the DNA samples with several oligonucleotide probes.

This technique can be used to estimate genome size of a microorganism, to reveal if a genome is circular or linear, to indicate the presence of megaplasmids, and to show if a strain contains only one or more chromosomes.
