Multiscale modeling of polycrystalline materials: A boundary element approach to material degradation and fracture

Abstract In this work, a two-scale approach to degradation and failure in polycrystalline materials is proposed. The formulation involves the engineering component level (macro-scale) and the material grain level (micro-scale). The macro-continuum is modeled using a three-dimensional boundary element formulation in which the presence of damage is formulated through an initial stress approach to account for the local softening in the neighborhood of points experiencing degradation at the micro-scale. Nonstationary flow surface theory for modeling the viscoplastic behaviors of soils

Abstract This paper presents a three-dimensional elastic viscoplastic model that can describe the time-dependent behaviors of soft clays. An Automated Visual Inspection System for the Classification of the Phases of Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Alloy

Metallography is the science of studying the physical properties of metal microstructures, by means of microscopes. While traditional approaches involve the direct observation of the acquired images by human experts, Com-puter Vision techniques may help experts in the analysis of the inspected mate-rials. In this paper we present an automated system to classify the phases of a Titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V. Our system has been tested to analyze the final products of a Friction Stir Welding process, to study the states of the micro-structures of the welded material.

A genetic algorithm for combined topology and shape optimisations

A method to find optimal topology and shape of structures is presented. With the first the optimal distribution of an assigned mass is found using an approach based on homogenisation theory, that seeks in which elements of a meshed domain it is present mass; with the second the discontinuous boundaries are smoothed. The use of UAV systems for surveying archaeological sites is becoming progressively more common due to the considerable potential in terms of rapidity of survey, costs and accuracy. The paper presents the first results of the photogrammetric survey of the archaeological site of Himera in Sicily (Italy) using by UAV systems. A complete documentation of the site through the production of a DSM and an ortho image were carried out.
