A Novel Semi-Supervised Methodology for Extracting Tumor Type-Specific MRS Sources in Human Brain Data

2013

Background: The clinical investigation of human brain tumors often starts with a non-invasive imaging study, providing \ud information about the tumor extent and location, but little insight into the biochemistry of the analyzed tissue. Magnetic \ud Resonance Spectroscopy can complement imaging by supplying a metabolic fingerprint of the tissue. This study analyses \ud single-voxel magnetic resonance spectra, which represent signal information in the frequency domain. Given that a single \ud voxel may contain a heterogeneous mix of tissues, signal source identification is a relevant challenge for the problem of\ud tumor type classification from the spectroscopic signal.\ud Methodology/Princ…

High Performance Computing on the COMETA Grid Infrastructure

2008

We present the High Performance Computing (HPC) projects jointly developed at the INAF - Osservatorio Astronomico di Palermo and at the DSFA - Universita` di Palermo which benefits of the Grid infrastructure of COMETA. We have contributed to setup the infrastructure in order to run HPC applications on the Grid. We report on our experience regarding to porting HPC applications to the Grid and to the first HPC simulations performed. The most demanding simulations describe the interaction of a magnetized supernova shock wave with an interstellar gas cloud. We discuss the resources required for the simulations, the performance and the scalability of our code on the Grid, and present first resul…

A magnetic skyrmion as a non-linear resistive element - a potential building block for reservoir computing

2017

Inspired by the human brain, there is a strong effort to find alternative models of information processing capable of imitating the high energy efficiency of neuromorphic information processing. One possible realization of cognitive computing are reservoir computing networks. These networks are built out of non-linear resistive elements which are recursively connected. We propose that a skyrmion network embedded in frustrated magnetic films may provide a suitable physical implementation for reservoir computing applications. The significant key ingredient of such a network is a two-terminal device with non-linear voltage characteristics originating from single-layer magnetoresistive effects,…

EEG-related Functional MRI in Benign Childhood Epilepsy with Centrotemporal Spikes

2003

The localization of epileptic foci is an important issue in children with extratemporal epilepsies. However, the value of noninvasive methods such as the EEG-assisted functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has not been sufficiently investigated in children. As a model of extratemporal epilepsies, we studied 7 patients aged 5 to 12 (median 10) years with benign childhood epilepsy and centrotemporal (rolandic) spikes. Interictal spikes were recorded during the fMRI acquisition on a MR-compatible battery-powered digital EEG system with 16 channels. The fMRI sequences were correlated off-line with the EEG spikes and analyzed with the software Statistical Parametrical Mapping SPM99. The fM…

Cross-species transcriptomic analysis elucidates constitutive aryl hydrocarbon receptor activity

2014

Background Research on the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) has largely focused on variations in toxic outcomes resulting from its activation by halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons. But the AHR also plays key roles in regulating pathways critical for development, and after decades of research the mechanisms underlying physiological regulation by the AHR remain poorly characterized. Previous studies identified several core genes that respond to xenobiotic AHR ligands across a broad range of species and tissues. However, only limited inferences have been made regarding its role in regulating constitutive gene activity, i.e. in the absence of exogenous ligands. To address this, we profiled transc…

Mobile Communities in Developing Countries

2010

The number of mobile devices has exceeded four billions and is still growing. Especially in developing countries mobile devices are often the only access to Internet and digital services. In the most developed countries laptops, Wi-Fi and faster and faster wireless telecom networks have for long time made mobile access to various digital services possible while on the move. Still, large and instant mobile communities can only rely on more portable devices, such as mobile phones. In this paper we will analyze various mobile communities and the support they are offered by the social media sites. We will discuss the phenomena encountered in developing countries, like how the mobile technology …

Transaction management for m-commerce at a mobile terminal

2006

Although there has been a lot of discussion of "transactions" in mobile e-commerce (m-commerce), very little attention has been paid for distributed transactional properties of the computations facilitating m-commerce. In this paper, we first present a requirement analysis and then present a wireless terminal-based transaction manager (TM) architecture. This architecture is based on the assumption that there is an application that supports certain business transaction(s) and that it uses the TM to store transactional state information and retrieve it after a communication link, application, or terminal crash. We present the design of such a TM, including the application interface, modules a…

Mobile Application Diffusion and Success: An Interpretative Approach to Influential Factors

2018

The rapid evolution of mobile computing technology has been attributed to the increasing capitalizing by companies on this innovative business medium. The result of conformity between technology advancement and market demand increment for mobility has led to the development of different categories of mobile businesses in recent years. This research reviews the previous related literature to the subject and by deploying meta-synthesis as a systematic quantitative method; a generic model covering important factors contributing to mobile application diffusion is presented. The proposed comprehensive model consists of users' specifications, technical aspects and contextual factors in the first …
