Fine-tuning the Ant Colony System algorithm through Particle Swarm Optimization

2018

Ant Colony System (ACS) is a distributed (agent- based) algorithm which has been widely studied on the Symmetric Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP). The optimum parameters for this algorithm have to be found by trial and error. We use a Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (PSO) to optimize the ACS parameters working in a designed subset of TSP instances. First goal is to perform the hybrid PSO-ACS algorithm on a single instance to find the optimum parameters and optimum solutions for the instance. Second goal is to analyze those sets of optimum parameters, in relation to instance characteristics. Computational results have shown good quality solutions for single instances though with high …

IncentMe: Effective Mechanism Design to Stimulate Crowdsensing Participants with Uncertain Mobility

2018

Mobile crowdsensing harnesses the sensing power of modern smartphones to collect and analyze data beyond the scale of what was previously possible with traditional sensor networks. Given the participatory nature of mobile crowdsensing, it is imperative to incentivize mobile users to provide sensing services in a timely and reliable manner. Most importantly, given sensed information is often valid for a limited period of time, the capability of smartphone users to execute sensing tasks largely depends on their mobility pattern, which is often uncertain. For this reason, in this paper, we propose IncentMe, a framework that solves this core issue by leveraging game-theoretical reverse auction …

P2P-PL: A pattern language to design efficient and robust peer-to-peer systems

2017

To design peer-to-peer (P2P) software systems is a challenging task, because of their highly decentralized nature, which may cause unexpected emergent global behaviors. The last fifteen years have seen many P2P applications to come out and win favor with millions of users. From success histories of applications like BitTorrent, Skype, MyP2P we have learnt a number of useful design patterns. Thus, in this article we present a P2P pattern language (shortly, P2P-PL) which encompasses all the aspects that a fully effective and efficient P2P software system should provide, namely consistency of stored data, redundancy, load balancing, coping with asymmetric bandwidth, decentralized security. The…

Extracting Backbones in Weighted Modular Complex Networks

2020

AbstractNetwork science provides effective tools to model and analyze complex systems. However, the increasing size of real-world networks becomes a major hurdle in order to understand their structure and topological features. Therefore, mapping the original network into a smaller one while preserving its information is an important issue. Extracting the so-called backbone of a network is a very challenging problem that is generally handled either by coarse-graining or filter-based methods. Coarse-graining methods reduce the network size by grouping similar nodes, while filter-based methods prune the network by discarding nodes or edges based on a statistical property. In this paper, we pro…

Probabilistic Memristive Networks: Application of a Master Equation to Networks of Binary ReRAM cells

2020

Abstract The possibility of using non-deterministic circuit components has been gaining significant attention in recent years. The modeling and simulation of their circuits require novel approaches, as now the state of a circuit at an arbitrary moment in time cannot be predicted deterministically. Generally, these circuits should be described in terms of probabilities, the circuit variables should be calculated on average, and correlation functions should be used to explore interrelations among the variables. In this paper, we use, for the first time, a master equation to analyze the networks composed of probabilistic binary memristors. Analytical solutions of the master equation for the ca…

Towards humane digitization : a wellbeing-driven process of personas creation

2019

Digital transformation is a process of digitizing the working and living environment in which people are at the center of digitization. In this paper, we present a personas-based guideline for system developers on how the humanization of digital transformation integrates into the design process. The proposed guideline uses the positive personas from the beginning as a basis for the transformation of the working environment into the digital form. We used the literature research as a preliminary study for the process of wellbeing-driven digital transformation design, consisting of questions for structuring the required information in the positive personas as well as a potential method that co…

Structural bias in population-based algorithms

2014

Abstract Challenging optimisation problems are abundant in all areas of science and industry. Since the 1950s, scientists have responded to this by developing ever-diversifying families of ‘black box’ optimisation algorithms. The latter are designed to be able to address any optimisation problem, requiring only that the quality of any candidate solution can be calculated via a ‘fitness function’ specific to the problem. For such algorithms to be successful, at least three properties are required: (i) an effective informed sampling strategy, that guides the generation of new candidates on the basis of the fitnesses and locations of previously visited candidates; (ii) mechanisms to ensure eff…

WarpCore: A Library for fast Hash Tables on GPUs

2020

Hash tables are ubiquitous. Properties such as an amortized constant time complexity for insertion and querying as well as a compact memory layout make them versatile associative data structures with manifold applications. The rapidly growing amount of data emerging in many fields motivated the need for accelerated hash tables designed for modern parallel architectures. In this work, we exploit the fast memory interface of modern GPUs together with a parallel hashing scheme tailored to improve global memory access patterns, to design WarpCore -- a versatile library of hash table data structures. Unique device-sided operations allow for building high performance data processing pipelines ent…

Blockchain-Based Proof of Location

2016

Location-Based Services (LBSs) build upon geographic information to provide users with location-dependent functionalities. In such a context, it is particularly important that geographic locations claimed by users are trustworthy. Centralized verification approaches proposed in the last few years are not satisfactory, as they entail a high risk to the privacy of users. In this paper, we present and evaluate a novel decentralized, infrastructure-independent proof-of-location scheme based on blockchain technology. Our scheme guarantees both location trustworthiness and user privacy preservation.

Alignment-free Genomic Analysis via a Big Data Spark Platform

2021

Abstract Motivation Alignment-free distance and similarity functions (AF functions, for short) are a well-established alternative to pairwise and multiple sequence alignments for many genomic, metagenomic and epigenomic tasks. Due to data-intensive applications, the computation of AF functions is a Big Data problem, with the recent literature indicating that the development of fast and scalable algorithms computing AF functions is a high-priority task. Somewhat surprisingly, despite the increasing popularity of Big Data technologies in computational biology, the development of a Big Data platform for those tasks has not been pursued, possibly due to its complexity. Results We fill this impo…
