Observations on mucus aggregates along Sicilian coasts during 1991–1992
1995
Abstract The results of some observations on gelatinous material accumulating on the sea ground and free floating in the water column along Sicilian coasts are reported. The phenomenon showed different development patterns moving from the Tyrrherian to the Jonian coast and to the Sicilian Channel. Moreover, in 1991, mucus aggregates in the Tyrrhenian sea showed a similar structure, behaviour and origin to those observed in the Adriatic sea, whereas, in 1992, only a massive growth of metaphytic threadlike algae, more or less producing gelatinous sheaths, occurred.
Toward Biopredictive Dissolution for Enteric Coated Dosage Forms
2016
The aim of this work was to develop a phosphate buffer based dissolution method for enteric-coated formulations with improved biopredictivity for fasted conditions. Two commercially available enteric-coated aspirin products were used as model formulations (Aspirin Protect 300 mg, and Walgreens Aspirin 325 mg). The disintegration performance of these products in a physiological 8 mM pH 6.5 bicarbonate buffer (representing the conditions in the proximal small intestine) was used as a standard to optimize the employed phosphate buffer molarity. To account for the fact that a pH and buffer molarity gradient exists along the small intestine, the introduction of such a gradient was proposed for p…
Hierarchical Mass Transfer Analysis of Drug Particle Dissolution, Highlighting the Hydrodynamics, pH, Particle Size, and Buffer Effects for the Disso…
2020
Dissolution is a crucial process for the oral delivery of drug products. Before being absorbed through epithelial cell membranes to reach the systemic circulation, drugs must first dissolve in the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In vivo and in vitro dissolutions are complex because of their dependency upon the drug physicochemical properties, drug product, and GI physiological properties. However, an understanding of this process is critical for the development of robust drug products. To enhance our understanding of in vivo and in vitro dissolutions, a hierarchical mass transfer (HMT) model was developed that considers the drug properties, GI fluid properties, and fluid hydrodynamics. T…
Activity–Bioavailability balance in Oral Drug Development for a Selected Group of 6‐Fluoroquinolones
2002
Abstract A nomogram is proposed to select the best candidate in drug development studies with quinolones and is intended to substitute other possible models. The nomogram is referred to as an activity–bioavailability balance (ABB) because it includes the following two criteria: ABB= 1 / gm MIC ( drug candidate ) 1 /gm MIC ( ciprofloxacin ) · F calc \( drug candidate \) F calc ( ciproflaxacin ) . The in vitro activity of a group of 4′ N ‐alkyl‐ciprofloxacin derivatives was determined together with that of ciprofloxacin, initially against some reference strains and subsequently against 159 clinical isolates of eight selected species. The inverse of the geometric mean of the lowest concentrati…
Micellization in Model Surfactant Systems
1999
Formation of micelles in model lattice surfactant systems was studied by a novel methodology based on grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The methodology involves combining free-energy information from a series of simulations in small systems by histogram reweighting. The solution osmotic pressure as a function of overall volume fraction of surfactant shows a sharp break at the critical micelle concentration (cmc) at sufficiently low temperatures. Studies in larger systems at appropriate values of the surfactant chemical potential are used to investigate the size distribution of micellar aggregates. The methodology allows for a clear distiction between micellization and macroscopic pha…
Synthesis of micro-mesoporous aluminosilicates on the basis of ZSM-5 zeolite using dual-functional templates at presence of micellar and molecular te…
2017
Abstract Micro-mesoporous aluminosilicates consisting of agglomerates of the ZSM-5 nanoparticles were obtained using dual-functional templates [C6H13–N+(CH3)2–C6H12–N+(CH3)2–C6H13](Br−)2 (C6–6–6Br2), [C8H17–N+(CH3)2–C6H12–N+(CH3)2–C8H17](Br−)2 (C8–6–8Br2). Aluminosilicates with randomly oriented flake-like particles built from ZSM-5 layers were obtained using [C16H33–N+(CH3)2–C6H12–N+(CH3)2–C6H13](Br−)2 (C16–6–6Br2). Use of С8–6–8Br2 and additive of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide CTAB (CTAB concentration is lower than the first critical micelle concentration, CMC1) leads to an increase of the total specific surface area, mesopore surface area and the mesopore size uniformity in the product,…
Some observations on the fluorometric determination of metallic elements in micellar media
1989
Abstract Experimental evidence is given allowing us to interpret why the detection limits obtained in micellar media are higher than those expected according to fluorescence enhancements for the niobium-lumogallion-tartrate system in the presence of different nonionic surfactants. The residual fluorescence of the surfactant solution and the competitive interaction with micelles between complexes and free ligands were studied. Near the critical micelle concentration of surfactants, remarkable changes in the emission spectra were observed in the case of both complex and free ligand solutions, which indicate the existence of interactions between the chemical system and surfactant monomers and …
Assessment of a single-acquisition imaging sequence for oxygen-sensitive (3)He-MRI.
2001
MRI of the lungs using hyperpolarized helium-3 (3He) allows the determination of intrapulmonary oxygen partial pressures (pO2). The need to separate competing processes of signal loss has hitherto required two different imaging series during two different breathing maneuvers. In this work, a new imaging strategy to measure pO2 by a single series of consecutive scans is presented. The feasibility of the method is demonstrated in three healthy human volunteers. Maps and histograms of intrapulmonary pO2 are calculated. Changes in the oxygen concentration of the inhaled gas mixture are well reproduced in the histograms. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of the temporal evolution of 3He hyperpolariza…
