Performance of H2-fed fuel cell with chitosan/silicotungstic acid membrane as proton conductor

2020

Composite organic–inorganic proton exchange membranes for H2–O2 fuel cells were fabricated by ionotropic gelation process combining a biopolymer (chitosan) with a heteropolyacid (silicotungstic acid). According to scanning electron microscopy analysis, compact, homogeneous and free-standing thin layers were synthesized. X-ray diffraction proved the crystallinity of the fabricated membranes and showed the presence of Chitosan Form I polymorph soon after the reticulation step and of the Form II polymorph after the functionalization step. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that the Keggin structure of the heteropolyacid is maintained inside the membrane even after the fabrica…

Phosphomolybdic acid and mixed phosphotungstic/phosphomolybdic acid chitosan membranes as polymer electrolyte for H2/O2 fuel cells

2017

Abstract Flat, free-standing phosphomolybdic acid and mixed phosphotungstic/phosphomolybdic acid chitosan membranes were prepared by in-situ ionotropic gelation process at room temperature on porous alumina support firstly impregnated by heteropolyacid. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the formation of compact and homogenous polymeric membranes, whose thickness resulted to be dependent on reticulation time, and almost independent on the employed heteropolyacid nature and concentration. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy evidenced the formation of crystalline membranes without appreciable concentration of unprotonated NH 2 groups and heteropolyacid ions with p…

Nanoscale membrane electrode assemblies based on porous anodic alumina for hydrogen–oxygen fuel cell

2007

In this paper, we demonstrate that nanoscale membrane electrode assemblies, functioning in a H 2/O 2 fuel cell, can be fabricated by impregnation of anodic alumina porous membranes with Nafion® and phosphotungstic acid. Porous anodic alumina is potentially a promising material for thin-film micro power sources because of its ability to be manipulated in micro-machining operations. Alumina membranes (Whatman, 50 μm thick, and pore diameters of 200 nm) impregnated with the proton conductor were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermal analysis. The electrochemical characterization of the membrane electrode assemblies was carried out by recording t…

Modulation of the organic heterojunction behavior, from electrografting to enhanced sensing properties

2019

International audience; The energy barrier of an organic heterojunction built on ITO electrodes and made from a low conductive sublayer (Cu(F16Pc)) covered by a highly conductive semiconductor (LuPc2) is modulated by electrografting of organic layers before depositing the sublayer. Impedance spectroscopy clearly demonstrates the increase of the energy barrier at the ITO – sublayer interface. Additionally, the electrografting is a versatile and promising method for the tuning of heterojunctions. The I(V) characteristics of the heterojunctions are highly modified by the electrografting. The same electromodifications of electrodes carried out on LuPc2 resistors lead to a modification of their …

Laser direct writing of gold conductors from metallorganic inks

1993

Laser deposition of gold lines from spin-on metallorganic (MO) precursors has been studied. A readily available and relatively low-cost commercial MO ink has been used to write gold interconnects on different substrates. The physical properties of the ink, its laser-firing process on oxidised silicon substrates and its electrical characterisation are presented here, together with the experimental procedure needed for obtaining low-resistivity deposits.

Dopants and defects: local structure and dynamics in barium cerates and zirconates

2010

In this paper we present an overview of state-of-the-art EXAFS measurements and data analysis on Ba, Ce, Zr, Y, In and Gd local environments in Y:BaCeO3, In:BaCeO3, Gd:BaCeO3, Y:BaZrO3, and In:BaZrO3, at different temperatures, hydration degrees and doping levels. This approach allows to reach unprecedented insights on the peculiar role of the dopant, and its interactions with the other lattice defects. In particular, we evidence that each different dopant shows unique behavior, depending mainly on its electronic structure, and that the usual criterion of ionic radius matching is not useful to outline an effective doping strategy of proton-conducting perovskites. As what concerns the struct…

Development and Characterization of Novel Conductive Nanofiller Based on Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Grafted with Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene)

2018

In the present study, an approach for the graft polymerization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) has been evaluated. The surface of the MWCNTs was activated with thiophene groups through the amide linker followed by oxidative polymerization of EDOT monomer resulted in the development of PEDOT-g-MWCNTs. The methods of thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray fluorescence, and Raman spectroscopy were used for characterization of functionalization efficiency. The TGA data indicated of 21% functionalization attached to MWCNTs. X-ray fluorescence confirmed the presence of Cl, and S atoms in functionalized fillers. The study of Raman spectra confirm…

Nano-lithography using a resist, patterned by electron exposure in an AFM configuration

1996

We have used a metallised force microscope tip to apply a voltage and thereby expose a very thin resist film. It is possible to image the film surface before, during and after the exposure, without interference with the process. Uniform resist films as thin as 10 nm are fabricated using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. To orient the defined pattern and to make electrical connections a special larger scale alignment structure is first defined by conventional electron beam lithography, either directly in the Langmuir-Blodgett resist film or in a complete first process with a separate resist system. The results from the one resist process gave conducting 50 nm lines in a 60 A thick aluminium f…

Flash microwave synthesis of trevorite nanoparticles.

2008

Nickel ferrite nanoparticles have several possible applications as cathode materials for rechargeable batteries, named 'lithium-ion' batteries. In this study, NiFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} was prepared by microwave induced thermohydrolysis. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET method, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). All the results show that the microwave one-step flash synthesis leads in a very short time to NiFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} nanoparticles with elementary particles size close to 4-5 nm, and high specific surfaces (close to 240 m…
