Solar radiation as a prospective energy source for green and economic processes in the food industry: From waste biomass valorization to dehydration,…

2019

International audience; Solar energy has recently attracted the attention of both industry and academia, to be used as a source of clean energy for green production of various products such as food-related commodities. This review aims to explore the applicability of this green energy source for extraction of valuable components (e.g., bioactive compounds and essential oils) from plant materials and waste biomass, dehydration of plant materials, water recovery through desalination, decontamination, cooking, and baking of agri-food products. According to the literature, concentrated solar power systems (CSP) have been successfully employed for bioactive compounds (e.g. essential oils) extrac…

Green technologies for food processing: Principal considerations

2019

Abstract The environmental impact of the food industry is of increasing concern for our society. Reductions in the amounts of harmful substances produced and in energy consumption, and increases in by-product recycling, are all requirements that the industry must now meet. However, “green technology” concepts are currently driving the development of new techniques in this field. Emerging green technologies are capable of superseding conventional thermal treatment, which negatively affects the physical, nutritional, and bioactive properties of food, and are also more environmentally friendly. Novel green techniques include ionizing and ultraviolet radiation, ohmic heating, high-power ultraso…

Effects of repeated handling, with or without anaesthesia, on feed intake and growth in juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum)

2006

The effects of weekly anaesthetization with clove oil and tricaine methanesulphonate (MS-222) on feed intake and growth were examined in juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), held individually. Repeated handling without anaesthetics significantly reduced feed intake and weight gain compared with an unhandled control group during an 8-week experiment. When anaesthetics were used during handling the feed consumption and weight gain were significantly (MS-222) or not significantly (clove oil) higher than in fish handled without anaesthesia. When compared with the unhandled control group, neither of these two anaesthetics had significant effects on feed intake but, in contrast …

Methanol fuel processor and PEM fuel cell modeling for mobile application

2010

International audience; The use of hydrocarbon fed fuel cell systems including a fuel processor can be an entry market for this emerging technology avoiding the problem of hydrogen infrastructure. This article presents a 1 kW low temperature PEM fuel cell system with fuel processor, the system is fueled by a mixture of methanol and water that is converted into hydrogen rich gas using a steam reformer. A complete system model including a fluidic fuel processor model containing evaporation, steam reformer, hydrogen filter, combustion, as well as a multi-domain fuel cell model is introduced. Experiments are performed with an IDATECH FCS1200™ fuel cell system. The results of modeling and experi…

Functional linear regression with functional rensponse application to prediction of electricity consumption

2008

Functional linear regression model linking observations of a functional response variable with measurements of an explanatory functional variable is considered. The slope function is estimated with a tensor product splines. Some computational issues are addressed by means of a simulation study. This model serves to analyze a real data set concerning electricity consumption in Sardinia. The interest lies in predicting either incoming weekend or incoming weekdays consumption curves if actual weekdays consumption is known.

A new plant wide modelling approach for the reduction of greenhouse Gas emission from wastewater treatment plants

2017

Recent studies about greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions show that sewer collection systems and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are anthropogenic GHG potential sources. Therefore, they contribute to the climate change and air pollution. This increasing interest towards climate change has led to the development of new tools for WWTP design and management. This paper presents the first results of a research project aiming at setting-up an innovative mathematical model platform for the design and management of WWTPs. More specifically, the study presents the project’s strategy aimed at setting-up a plant-wide mathematical model which can be used as a tool for reducing/controlling GHG from WWTP.…

Effect of sodium borohydride and hydrogen peroxide pretreatments on soda pulping of sugar maple (Acer saccharum)

2021

For recovering value-added wood-based organic material prior to delignification, sodium borohydride (NaBH4) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) pretreatments under alkaline conditions were performed before soda pulping of sugar maple (Acer saccharum) chips with sodium hydroxide (NaOH). In this investigation, it was determined whether the pulp yield could be increased by partly stabilizing the hemicelluloses by these pretreatments, and simultaneously obtains lower pulp kappa numbers. The results indicated that when aiming to the same kappa numbers (i.e., kappa numbers 14.3-20.5), roughly 3% higher pulp yield could be achieved if the chips were pretreated with alkaline 0.5% NaBH4 solutions, compared…

An efficient data model for energy prediction using wireless sensors

2019

International audience; Energy prediction is in high importance for smart homes and smart cities, since it helps reduce power consumption and provides better energy and cost savings. Many algorithms have been used for predicting energy consumption using data collected from Internet of Things (IoT) devices and wireless sensors. In this paper, we propose a system based on Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) to predict energy consumption of a building using collected information (e.g., light energy, day of the week, humidity, temperature, etc.) from a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). We compare our system against four other classification algorithms, namely: Linear Regression (LR), Support Vector Machin…
