The Role of Adenine Excimers in the Photophysics of Oligonucleotides
2009
Energies and structures of different arrangements of the stacked adenine homodimer have been computed at the ab initio CASPT2 level of theory in isolation and in an aqueous environment. Adenine dimers are shown to form excimer singlet states with different degrees of stacking and interaction. A model for a 2-fold decay dynamics of adenine oligomers can be supported in which, after initial excitation in the middle UV range, unstacked or slightly stacked pairs of nucleobases will relax by an ultrafast internal conversion to the ground state, localizing the excitation in the monomer and through the corresponding conical intersection with the ground state. On the other hand, long-lifetime intra…
Singlet Excited-State Interactions in Naphthalene-Thymine Dyads
2004
Two thymidine-derived nucleosides 1 and 2 were prepared by attaching a chiral naphthalene to the positions 5′ and 3′ of the sugar. The resulting dyads, which contain key substructures present in drugs and nucleic acids, exhibit different spatial arrangements (transoid or cisoid) of the fluorophore relative to the thymine unit. Emission measurements on these compounds in the presence of ROH molecules revealed a remarkable intramolecular fluorescence quenching for dyad 1. The obtained results are consistent with quenching of the singlet excited state of 1 by hydrogen-bond donor solvents. Thus, a physical deactivation process (vibronically induced internal conversion) would be the pathway resp…
Theoretical insight into the intrinsic ultrafast formation of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers in UV-irradiated DNA: thymine versus cytosine.
2008
The higher formation yields measured in the ultrafast photoinduced formation of cyclobutane thymine dimers (T T) with respect to those of cytosine (C C) are explained, on the basis of ab initio CASPT2 results, by the existence in thymine of more reactive orientations and a less efficient photoreversibility, whereas in cytosine the funnel toward the photolesion becomes competitive with that mediating the internal conversion of the excited-cytosine monomer.
Energy conversion from external fluctuating signals based on asymmetric nanopores
2015
Electrical transduction from fluctuating external signals is central to energy conversion based on nanoscale electrochemical devices and bioelectronics interfaces. We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a significant energy transduction from white noise signals using the electrical rectification of asymmetric nanopores in polymeric membranes immersed in aqueous electrolyte solutions. Load capacitor voltages of the order of 1 V are obtained within times of the order of 1 min by means of nanofluidic diodes which convert zero time-average potentials of amplitudes of the order of 1 V into average net currents. We consider single-nanopore and multipore membranes to show that the convers…
Engineering nanoarchitectures for high performance solar cells
2020
Abstract Inorganic semiconductor nanomaterials are exploited for the solar energy conversion for the past few decades and astonishing efficiency records are achieved through various device architectures. Interesting morphologies such as nanospheres, nanorods, nanoplates, nanowires, nanotubes, and hierarchy nanostructures are delivering promising results and contributing high efficiency in various kinds of modern generation solar cells. These architectures are obtained by different synthesis approaches in which all the dimensions of the materials could perfectly be tuned through optimized physical parameters. Contributions of these architectures to long term-stability, good carrier transport…
Nanostructured Electrochemical Devices for Sensing, Energy Conversion and Storage
2016
Nanomaterials are very promising to enhance device performances for sensing, sustainable energy production, and energy conversion and storage, as extensively reported in the literature [1-3]. In this field, one of the most severe challenge is to find suitable methods for fabricating nanomaterials. Over the years, numerous preparation methods were proposed in the literature, but not all of them are easily scalable and economically advantageous for industrial application. In this context, electrochemical deposition in template is a facile method for fabricating either two- or one-dimensional nanostructured materials because it allows to easily adjust the fundamental parameters controlling the…
Growth mechanisms and related thermoelectric properties of innovative hybrid networks fabricated by direct deposition of Bi2Se3 and Sb2Te3 on multiwa…
2020
Abstract Flexible thermoelectric generators are an emerging trend in the field of waste heat conversion, as well as wearable and autonomous devices. However, the energy conversion efficiency of the state-of-the-art flexible thermoelectric devices is too low for their wide application and commercialization. In this work, n- and p-type multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-thermoelectric material hybrid networks that may become a promising building block for the fabrication of flexible thermoelectric devices are presented. The hybrid networks were fabricated by direct deposition of thermoelectric material (Bi2Se3, Sb2Te3) on the MWCNT networks using physical vapor deposition technique. Growth m…
Opioid switching from and to tapentadol extended release in cancer patients: conversion ratio with other opioids
2013
Objectives: The aim of this exploratory study was to assess the conversion ratios between tapentadol and other opioids in patients requiring an opioid switching. Methods: A prospective study was carried out in a convenience sample of consecutive patients admitted to an acute palliative care unit and a home care unit for a period of 1 year. Patients who were switched from/to tapentadol were selected. The initial ratio between tapentadol and other opioids, expressed as oral morphine equivalents was 1:3.3. The subsequent doses were flexible and were changed to fit the patients’ needs. Pain intensity and distress score were recorded until opioid doses were stable. In all, 37 patients were exami…
Optical characterization of YCa4O(BO3)3 and Nd:YCa4O(BO3)3 crystals
2007
International audience; We report a complete optical characterization of YCa4O(BO3)3 and Nd:YCa4O(BO3)3 crystals. We studied the relative orientation between the dielectric and the crystallographic frames as a function of the wavelength and performed accurate phase-matching angles measurements for second harmonic generation, using a single crystal cut as a sphere. We also recorded polarized luminescence spectra of Nd:YCOB along the principal axes of the dielectric frame. For both crystals, we measured the gray-tracking and the thermo-optic properties as a function of temperature and wavelength using oriented slabs. Finally, we measured all their dielectric and electro-optic coefficients, as…
