Current flow through a nanoparticle film (two-dimensional ensemble of small tunnel-coupled metal particles on a dielectric substrate) is accompanied by electron and photon emission. It has a localized character (originates from emission centers). With an increase in applied voltage, the number of emission centers increases, and with further increase, some of them may burn out. In dark conditions, photon emission centers are visible with a bare eye. To visualize electron emission centers, emission electron microscopy is used. Tritium retention measurements by accelerator mass spectrometry and full combustion of W-coated and uncoated CFC tiles from the JET divertor

Abstract Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and the full combustion method (FCM) followed by liquid scintillation counting were applied to quantitatively determine the tritium retention in the tungsten-coated carbon fibre composites (CFC), in comparison to uncoated CFC tiles from the JET divertor. The tiles were adjacent and exposed to plasma operations between 2007 and 2009. The tritium depth profiles are showing that the tritium retention on the W-coated tile was reduced by a factor of 13.5 in comparison to the uncoated tile whereas the bulk tritium concentration is approximately the same for both tiles.

Borexino is a liquid scintillation detector located deep underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS, Italy). Thanks to the unmatched radio-purity of the scintillator, and to the well understood detector response at low energy, a new limit on the stability of the electron for decay into a neutrino and a single mono-energetic photon was obtained. This new bound, tau > 6.6 10**28 yr at 90 % C.L., is two orders of magnitude better than the previous limit.

A novel technique for metabolic imaging using quantitative bioluminescence and single photon imaging was used to measure the distribution of ATP and lactate in two types of human melanoma xenografts with different radiobiologically hypoxic cell fractions (MF: 45 +/- 17% and EE: 6 +/- 3%; mean +/- SD). The tumours were s.c. grown in nude mice and were used for measurement at volumes of 153-3072 mm3. The peak coincidence counting rate F(T) was measured for Sn-54wt%In alloy at the temperature range from room temperature to 400°C. It was observed that for both heating and cooling run, F(Τ) parameter changes . in the liquid phase. These changes were related to disintegration of SnII microcrystals. From a simple trapping model the defect disintegration enthalpy, H1,, was calculated. For heating and cooling run, the value of H1 was 0.53 ± 0.03 eV and 0.67 ± 0.07 eV, respectively. For well-annealed and cold rolled samples we find only one component, equal 200 ps, in the lifetime spectrum. PACS numbers: 64.70.Dv, 61.72.Cc, 78.70.Bj.

Statistical analysis of time resolved single molecule fluorescence data without time binning

We depict two algorithms to calculate correlation functions from two different time resolved single molecule fluorescence experiments without the need of time binning. Our first procedure allows to calculate the reduced linear dichroism from polarization resolved fluorescence data. Since we process single photon counts instead of time binned data, considerably faster fluctuations of the dichroism can be analyzed than with conventional methods. With our second procedure time resolved fluorescence obtained with a time correlated single photon counting setup can be analyzed with respect to fluorescence lifetime fluctuations. Skin-remitted picosecond laser pulses were detected at four input-output fiber distances in the spectral range 560-800 nm. After deconvolution procedures, distributions and mean values of the remitted photon path lengths in forearm skin were analyzed.
