Calcifying odontogenic cyst : a 26-year retrospective clinicopathological analysis and immunohistochemical study

Background To identify the prevalence and clinicopathological profile of calcifying odontogenic cysts (COC) stored at an oral pathology service, and to analyze the immunoexpression of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) and cyclin D1 (CD1) in these cysts. Material and methods After a retrospective analysis (1990-2016) carried out to identify cases of COC, a sample of 12 cases was selected for immunohistochemical analysis of COX-2 and CD1 by the immunoperoxidase technique. Protein expression was evaluated semiquantitatively by attributing a score of 0 to 3 (0 = no staining; 1 = 1-25%; 2 = 26-50%, and 3 = >51% immunopositive cells). Radiographic differential diagnosis includes osteosarcoma, fibrous dysplasia, central giant cell granuloma, ameloblastoma, odontogenic myxoma, multiple myeloma, dentigerous cyst and aneurysmal bone cyst. Hydatidosis of the Central Nervous System in South America

In this chapter, we reviewed the epidemiology of cystic hydatidosis in South America, especially focusing on hydatidosis of the central nervous system. Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis are the most frequent species in humans. Hydatidosis is endemic in several Latin American countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay. The global occurrence of hydatid cysts of the central nervous system is uniformly low, with a reported incidence of 0.9–2.1 % of all cases of hydatidosis.

In a multicenter trial we retrospectively evaluated the clinical and sonographic data of 49 neonatal ovarian cysts, 44 of which were detected prenatally and 5 on the first day after delivery. Of the 44 prenatally detected cysts 39 were purely cystic, 5 echogenic or had a mixed pattern. In 20 patients the cystic appearance changed during delivery from purely cystic to a mixed pattern being independent on the size of the cyst. 26 of the 44 cysts were treated surgically. Salpingotorsion was found in 8 and was independent on the size of the cyst. The study aimed at evaluating in vitro the effect of caffeine on expression of cystatin SN, a potential marker of sensitivity to bitterness in humans.Differentiation of human submandibular gland (HSG) cells was induced by culturing cells on Matrigel. Caffeine cytotoxicity was assessed over 3 days by the Resazurin test. Finally, effects of 5, 50 and 100μM caffeine exposure on cystatin SN expression were explored over 3 days by ELISA.At concentrations relevant to human adult plasma levels (5, 50 and 100μM), caffeine did not affect cell viability whether cells were differentiated or not. Management of congenital midline nasofrontal dermoid cysts in two identical twins: Case report

Midline dermoid cysts are uncommon lesions that can lead to severe complications when an intracranial extension exists. We report the cases of two twin sisters referred to surgery for removal of the masses and the intracranial extension. They represent an additional example of familial nasal dermoid cysts, providing further support for a genetic basis for the disorder.

BACKGROUND Arachnoid cysts of the paranasal sinus are rare. They have not been described yet in the sphenoid sinus. PATIENT AND METHOD Microscopic-endoscopic endonasal surgery of the sphenoid sinus was performed on a 34-year-old female with a history of chronic headaches and a suspected mucocele of the sphenoid sinus in computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. An extended arachnoid cyst was found in the enlarged sphenoid sinus, which was obliterated with collagen, fibrin glue, and abdominal fat. Abstract Objective We present s a case of aneurysmal bone cyst, unusual and rare, both for its location and its initial clinical and radiographic presentation. Case report A girl of 13 years consulting for atraumatic pain in the outer edge of right foot, with a normal initial X-ray and then one month later presented with a subperiosteal tumour lesion in the fifth metatarsal shaft, which was definitively diagnosed as an aneurysmal bone cyst, Campanacci type IV.
