Decay assessment of stone-built cultural heritage: The case study of the cosenza cathedral façade (south calabria, italy)

2021

This study aims to assess the different decay phenomena affecting the Cosenza Cathedral façade (Calabria, South Italy) through the evaluation of the relative damage indices. For this goal, a multidisciplinary approach was applied exploiting both nondestructive and microdestructive techniques. Such a combination enabled proposing an intervention priority scale that can be helpful to institutions when planning a prompt restoration intervention. The results suggest the efficiency of this approach to obtain a multidisciplinary diagnostic and conservation system for the management and valorization of the Cultural Heritage also in terms of monitoring, maintenance, and selection of the most suitab…

Criteri per l’analisi post-danno – Criteria for post-damage analysis.

2010

Occupational exposure to environmental pollutants: evaluation of long-term effects on a group of newsagents in the city of Palermo

2012

Environmental pollution constantly threatens the health of urban populations. This problem of environmental hygiene takes a particular interest in Occupational Medicine, whereas some tasks take place mostly outdoors, so the airborne pollutants and noise can be considered as occupational hazards. The subject of this study is to evaluate the health of a group of newsagents in the city of Palermo, in relation to the level of urban pollution and noise monitored in ten years (2000-2010). It was assessed lung function, hearing, kidney, liver and cardiovascular systems, with particular reference to endothelial structures. Analysis of the results show the high prevalence of damage to the carotid di…

The Recovery of the Optimal Damping Constant by the MRF Damper

2009

In this paper was studied a method to analyze the recovering of optimal damping constant because of temperature increasing in a shock absorber. The increasing on temperature leads to decreasing that constant by mean dynamic viscosity such to modify the dynamic behavior of a 2DOF system built-up by sprung and unsprung mass. A MagnetoRheological damper was designed according with the desired optimal damping constant once fixed temperature design. It was seen that the increasing of temperature this constant is lost. As MagnetoRheological-Fluids allows us to increase the viscosity, we use a control signal by a state feedback of reduced order to create a such magnetic induction field to recover …

Oxysterols Incorporate in Primary Porcine Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells and Induce Inflammation and Oxidative Stress

2006

International audience; Purpose: : Aging is associated with an accumulation of cholesterol in the Bruch’s membrane. Cholesterol is prone to undergo oxidation and to generate oxysterols that have cytotoxic properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of oxysterols on cell viability, oxidative stress and inflammation and to measure oxysterol incorporation in primary porcine retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell cultures. Methods: : Porcine RPE cells were incubated with oxysterols (24S–hydroxycholesterol, 24OH ; 25–hydroxycholesterol, 25OH and 7–ketocholesterol, 7K) (100µg, 50µM) for 24 and 48h. Cell viability was evaluated by measuring mitochondrial succinate dehydrogenase (S…

Influence of aryl hydrocarbon- (Ah) receptor and genotoxins on DNA repair gene expression and cell survival of mouse hepatoma cells

2009

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) mediates toxicity of a variety of environmental pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and dioxins. However, the underlying mechanisms and genetic programmes regulated by AhR to cause adverse effects but also to counteract poisoning are still poorly understood. Here we analysed the effects of two AhR ligands, benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), a DNA damaging tumour initiator and promotor and 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), a pure tumour promoter, on cell survival and on nucleotide excision repair (NER) gene expression. NER deals with so called "bulky" DNA adducts including those generated by enzymatically activated B[a]P. Therefore, t…

UV-B exposure causes DNA damage and changes in protein expression in northern pike (Esox lucius) posthatched embryos.

2012

The ongoing anthropogenically caused ozone depletion and climate change has increased the amount of biologically harmful UV-B radiation, which is detrimental to fish in embryonal stages. The effects of UV-B radiation on the levels and locations of DNA damage manifested as cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs), heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and p53 protein in newly hatched embryos of pike were examined. Pike larvae were exposed in the laboratory to current and enhanced doses of UV-B radiation. UV-B exposure caused the formation of CPDs in a fluence rate-dependent manner, and the CPDs were found deeper in the tissues with increasing fluence rates. UV-B radiation induced HSP70 in epidermis, and…

Digital control circuitry for the p53 dynamics in cancer cell and apoptosis

2010

Abstract Experimental work and theoretical models deduce a “digital” response of the p53 transcription factor when genomic integrity is damaged. The mutual influence of p53 and its antagonist, the Mdm2 oncogene, is closed in a feedback. This paper proposes an aerospace-based architecture for translating the p53/Mdm2/DNA damage network into a digital circuitry in which the optimal control theory is applied for obtaining the requested dynamic evolutions of some considered cell species for repairing a DNA damage. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of such digital circuitry design to detect and predict the cell species dynamics for shedding light on their inner and mutua…
