New Metropolitan Perspectives Transition with Resilience for Evolutionary Development
2023
This open access book conveys attention to the theme of transition towards resilience and sustainability and its evolutionary perspective that emphasizes the complexity and uncertainty that governments and society are called to address in response to the ongoing challenges. "New Metropolitan Perspective Post COVID Dynamics: Green and Digital Transition, between Metropolitan and Return to Villages’ Perspectives”, 25–27 May 2022, Reggio Calabria, Italy. The papers included in the book are grouped around the following main topics: the envisaged transition towards resilience and sustainability; the relevance of the planning dimension for defining sustainable development pathways and managing co…

Towards an understanding of big data analytics as a weapon for competitive performance
2017
Master's thesis Information Systems IS501 - University of Agder 2017 Context: Big data has in the recent years been an area of interest among innovative organizations and has started to become a major priority for organizations in general, either through their own big data departments or by purchasing big data analyses from suppliers. Big data analytics means more knowledge from more data sources and is by many prophesied to be a contributing source of big change in how organizations receive their intelligence. Purpose: This thesis investigates the connection between big data and competitive performance. This connection could be explained through the following two paths; 1) how big data ana…
Operating leverage and the cost of debt in European agri-food firms
2020
Aim of study: To analyse the effect that operating leverage exerts on the cost of debt of agri-food firms in Europe, both in isolation and indirectly through its other risk factors.Area of study: We used panel data made up of 18,360 European firms from 2009 to 2016 (146,880 observations).Material and methods: The data were extracted from the ORBIS database and EUROSTAT. The econometric approach was estimated by the Generalized Method of Moments.Main results: The results obtained confirm that operating leverage or cost structure, in addition to affecting the cost of debt, also affects the relationship between that cost and other sources of risk. More specifically, indebtedness, size, specifi…
Lifelong physical activity and long-term labor market outcomes
2018
This thesis examines the longitudinal associations between leisure-time physical activity, educational attainment, and labor market outcomes. Data are drawn from the ongoing longitudinal Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study, which is combined with register-based data from Statistics Finland. The thesis consists of four empirical studies organized in separate chapters. The study chapters are preceded by an introductory chapter presenting the background literature and an overview of the thesis, including the research questions, data, and main results. Chapter 2 analyzes the role of childhood physical activity in academic achievement and subsequent educational attainment. We find that phys…
Motivational sources of practical nursing students at risk of dropping out from vocational education and training
2019
The aim of this study was to contribute to the understanding of the reasons for low or high academic motivation among practical nursing students at risk of dropping out from vocational education and training. The research data consisted of semi-structured interviews with 14 Finnish students, which were analysed by qualitative content analysis. The analysis identified six motivational sources. Two of these sources – Responsible agency and Completing out of necessity – were related to engagement in studying, whereas two other sources – Exhaustion from learning challenges and Tight-roping between competing responsibilities – were related to disengagement from studying. Emotional drive and Soci…
Eye-Movement Study of Mechanics Problem Solving Using Multimodal Options
2020
We used an eye-tracking method to investigate students’ approaches to solving a physics task using various representations. Eight upper-secondary school students from Finland took part in the study. We found that students who preferred either the text or graph representations watched the options differently, but they used both representations to be sure of their solution. Transitions between text and graph alternatives were different for students preferring either text or graph representations. Interviews revealed typical misconceptions about the concept of force. Implications for physics instruction are presented. peerReviewed
A Register Study Suggesting Homotypic and Heterotypic Comorbidity Among Individuals With Learning Disabilities
2023
The present study examined whether learning disabilities (LD) in reading and/or math (i.e., reading disability [RD], math disability [MD], and RD+MD) co-occur with other diagnoses. The data comprised a clinical sample (n= 430) with LD identified in childhood and a sample of matched controls (n= 2,140). Their medical diagnoses (according to the International Classification of Diseases nosology) until adulthood (20–39 years) were analyzed. The co-occurrence of LD with neurodevelopmental disorders was considered a homotypic comorbidity, and co-occurrence with disorders or diseases from the other diagnostic categories (i.e., mental and behavioral disorders, diseases of the nervous system, injur…
Solar radiative effects of a Saharan dust plume observed during SAMUM assuming spheroidal model particles
2011
The solar optical properties of Saharan mineral dust observed during the Saharan Mineral Dust Experiment (SAMUM) were explored based on measured size-number distributions and chemical composition. The size-resolved complex refractive index of the dust was derived with real parts of 1.51–1.55 and imaginary parts of 0.0008–0.006 at 550 nm wavelength. At this spectral range a single scattering albedo ω o and an asymmetry parameter g of about 0.8 were derived. These values were largely determined by the presence of coarse particles. Backscatter coefficients and lidar ratios calculated with Mie theory (spherical particles) were not found to be in agreement with independently measured lidar data.…
Peer interaction and pioneering organizational form adoption : A tale of the first two for-profit stock exchanges
2021
Building on a historical case study on the first two stock exchanges to adopt the now globally dominant for-profit organizational form, the Stockholm Stock Exchange in 1993 and the Helsinki Stock Exchange in 1995, we argue that interaction among socially proximate peers contributes to pioneering organizational form adoption within an industry, particularly when such forms are introduced by established organizations. Peer interaction can induce a search for technically efficient organizational forms through the sharing of collective experiences, the establishment of collective assumptions, and a joint search for solutions. Together, these factors contribute to the legitimization of novel or…
