Comparative study of illite clay and illite-based geopolymer products

2011

Quaternary (Q-clay) clayey deposits are one of the dominating parts of mineral raw materials of the sedimentary cover at present area of Latvia. These clays can be characterised by illite content up to 75-80 %. Two ways for use of illite clays were studied: conventional and geopolymers method. Purpose of the second mentioned method was showing the influence of alkali (KOH) on the transformation of Q-clay/illite structure. Obtained products were investigated by IR–spectroscopy, DTA and XRD, pore size distribution was determined as well. Some ceramic properties and compressive strength were determined and compared. IR-spectrum showed the effect of alkali on the transformation of Q-clay/illite…

Hot-Carrier Generation in Plasmonic Nanoparticles: The Importance of Atomic Structure

2020

Metal nanoparticles are attractive for plasmon-enhanced generation of hot carriers, which may be harnessed in photochemical reactions. In this work, we analyze the coherent femtosecond dynamics of photon absorption, plasmon formation, and subsequent hot-carrier generation through plasmon dephasing using first-principles simulations. We predict the energetic and spatial hot-carrier distributions in small metal nanoparticles and show that the distribution of hot electrons is very sensitive to the local structure. Our results show that surface sites exhibit enhanced hot-electron generation in comparison to the bulk of the nanoparticle. While the details of the distribution depend on particle s…

Influence of low power CW laser irradiation on skin hemoglobin changes

2012

Influence of low power laser irradiance on healthy skin using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and multispectral imaging was studied. Changes of diffuse reflectance spectra in spectral range from 500 to 600 nm were observed after 405 nm, 473 nm and 532 nm laser provocation, leading to conclusion that the content of skin hemoglobin has changed. Peaks in spectral absorbance (optical density) curves corresponded to well-known oxy-hemoglobin absorbance peaks at 542 and 577 nm.

Elastic, electronic and optical properties of boron- and nitrogen-doped 4,12,4-graphyne nanosheet

2020

Abstract The effects of boron (B) and nitrogen (N) dopants on 4,12,4-graphyne have been systematically investigated with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The charge density analysis reveals that the N dopant at the sp-site destroys the acetylenic linkage in 4,12,4-graphyne, but instead tends to form a polar bond. The B- and N-doped 4,12,4-graphyne systems exhibit p- and n- semiconductor characters, respectively. Some obvious spin splitting polarizations can be observed in their band structures and DOS. Moreover, there is a giant difference in effective masses between electrons and electron holes, especially for B-doped 4,12,4-graphyne at C5 site. The directional electron and el…

Jet-vortex spray freeze drying for the production of inhalable lyophilisate powders

2016

Abstract Spray-freeze-dried powders were suggested for nasal, epidermal (needle-free injection) or pulmonary application of proteins, peptides or nucleic acids. In spray-freeze-drying processes an aqueous solution is atomized into a refrigerant medium and subsequently dried by sublimation. Droplet-stream generators produce a fast stream of monodisperse droplets, where droplets are subject to collisions and therefore the initial monodispersity is lost and droplets increase in diameter, which reduces their suitability for pulmonary application. In jet-vortex-freezing, a droplet-stream is injected into a vortex of cold process gas to prevent droplet collisions. Both the injection position of t…

Reduction of oxygen to H2O2 at carbon felt cathode in undivided cells. Effect of the ratio between the anode and the cathode surfaces and of other op…

2019

Abstract In the last years, the electrochemical conversion of oxygen to hydrogen peroxide at carbon felt has been largely studied in order to define a new route for the production of H2O2 and to optimize the electro-Fenton process, which is based on the cathodic generation of H2O2. In particular, many studies regarding electro-Fenton process were carried out in undivided cells in order to avoid the costs of the separator and to reduce the cell potentials. Hence, in order to optimize the cathodic conversion of oxygen to H2O2 in undivided cells, the effect of many parameters linked to the anodic process were here evaluated. In particular, it was demonstrated that the performances of the proce…

Soft X-ray emission spectroscopy used for the characterization of a-C and CNx thin films

2015

Abstract We present the results of a soft X-ray emission spectroscopy study of a-C and CNx films on a Si(100) substrate. Also for the characterization of the homogeneity in depth of these films electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements with localization better than 4 nm were carried out. In case of CNx films the highest diamond-like modification occurs in the region close to the Si(100) substrate. The film density decreases with increasing distance from the substrate and becomes almost constant in range of thicknesses more than ~ 2 nm.

First-principles calculations of the atomic and electronic structure ofFcenters in the bulk and on the (001) surface ofSrTiO3

2006

The atomic and electronic structure, formation energy, and the energy barriers for migration have been calculated for the neutral O vacancy point defect F center in cubic SrTiO3 employing various implementations of density functional theory DFT. Both bulk and TiO2-terminated 001 surface F centers have been considered. Supercells of different shapes containing up to 320 atoms have been employed. The limit of an isolated single oxygen vacancy in the bulk corresponds to a 270-atom supercell, in contrast to commonly used supercells containing 40– 80 atoms. Calculations carried out with the hybrid B3PW functional show that the F center level approaches the conduction band bottom to within 0.5 eV…

Isotopic Effect In Extended X-Ray-Absorption Fine Structure of Germanium

2008

Extended x-ray absorption fine structure has been measured on two powdered samples of 70Ge and 76Ge as a function of temperature from 20 to 300 K. The effect of isotopic mass difference on the amplitude of relative atomic vibrations is neatly evidenced by the temperature dependence of the difference of Debye-Waller factors. The isotopic effect is also detected on the difference of nearest-neighbor average ineratomic distances, thanks to a resolution better than 10 fm. (DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.100.055901)

Optimal ferromagnetically-coated carbon nanotube tips for ultra-high resolution magnetic force microscopy

2013

Using single-walled carbon nanotubes homogeneously coated with ferromagnetic metal as ultra-high resolution magnetic force microscopy probes, we investigate the key image formation parameters and their dependence on coating thickness. The crucial step of introducing molecular beam epitaxy for deposition of the magnetic coating allows highly controlled fabrication of tips with small magnetic volume, while retaining high magnetic anisotropy and prolonged lifetime characteristics. Calculating the interaction between the tips and a magnetic sample, including hitherto neglected thermal noise effects, we show that optimal imaging is achieved for a finite, intermediate-thickness magnetic coating, …
