C-S-H/solution interface: Experimental and Monte Carlo studies

2010

International audience; The surface charge density of C-S-H particles appears to be one of the key parameters for predicting the cohesion strength, understanding the ion retention, the pollutant leakage, and admixture adsorption in hydrated cement pastes. This paper presents a Monte Carlo simulation of the surface-ions interactions that permits the prediction of surface charge density (σ), electrokinetic potential (ζ) and ions adsorption of mineral surfaces in equilibrium with a given electrolyte solution. Simulated results are compared to experimental data obtained by titration, electrokinetic potential measurements and ions uptake in the case of C-S-H suspensions. An excellent agreement i…

Near-intrinsic energy resolution for 30-662 keV gamma rays in a high pressure xenon electroluminescent TPC

2013

We present the design, data and results from the NEXT prototype for Double Beta and Dark Matter (NEXT-DBDM) detector, a high-pressure gaseous natural xenon electroluminescent time projection chamber (TPC) that was built at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. It is a prototype of the planned NEXT-100 Xe-136 neutrino-less double beta decay (0 nu beta beta) experiment with the main objectives of demonstrating near-intrinsic energy resolution at energies up to 662 keV and of optimizing the NEXT-100 detector design and operating parameters. Energy resolutions of similar to 1% FWHM for 662 keV gamma rays were obtained at 10 and 15 atm and similar to 5% FWHM for 30 keV fluorescence xenon X-…

Intracranial measurement of current densities induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation in the human brain

2003

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive technique that uses the principle of electromagnetic induction to generate currents in the brain via pulsed magnetic fields. The magnitude of such induced currents is unknown. In this study we measured the TMS induced current densities in a patient with implanted depth electrodes for epilepsy monitoring. A maximum current density of 12 microA/cm2 was recorded at a depth of 1 cm from scalp surface with the optimum stimulation orientation used in the experiment and an intensity of 7% of the maximal stimulator output. During TMS we recorded relative current variations under different stimulating coil orientations and at different points…

High-frequency electrodeless discharges in helium

2004

Modelling of high-frequency electrodeless discharges (HFEDs) in helium is presented. The model combines calculations of electromagnetic field profiles and plasma parameters including kinetics of the excited atomic states. A method of the self-consistent numerical solution for the plasma?field system is proposed. The method takes into account a temporal hierarchy of the kinetic processes in the HFED plasma. A stationary collision-radiative model for helium plasma is developed considering the following equations: (i) the transport equations for the electrons, (ii) the electron energy balance equation, (iii) the population rate equations for balance in the excited states and (iv) the electroma…

Winding loss analysis and optimization of an AC inductor for a galvanically isolated PV inverter

2012

This paper describes simple treatments for fringing fields of air gaps in the core and bypass fluxes in the winding window area of an existing high frequency AC inductor used by a commercial developer of PV inverters. For this purpose, Maxwell (ANSOFT) electromagnetic software package is used for winding eddy current loss analysis. It is displayed that air gaps cause high flux strength and, therefore, induce significantly high eddy currents to the surrounded windings. Proximity effect also causes non uniform current density in the winding. Altogether, the inductor is affected by fringing fields, and proximity effect produces a very high AC resistance, consequently resulting in undesirable h…

Human Sleep EEG under the Influence of Pulsed Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Fields

2000

Former exploratory investigations of sleep alterations due to global system for mobile communications (GSM) signals have shown a hypnotic and REM-suppressive effect under field exposure. This effect was observed in a first study using a power flux density of 0.5 W/m2, and the same trend occurred in a second study with a power flux density of 0.2 W/m2. For the present study, we applied a submaximal power flux density of 50 W/m2. To investigate putative effects of radio frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) of cellular GSM phones on human sleep EEG pattern, all-night polysomnographies of 20 healthy male subjects both with …

X-ray investigations of the superstructure of collagen

2008

When compared with results from humid fibers, characteristic changes of the SAXS-pattern taken from dried collagen fibers have been observed. The average lateral width of the various reflexions increases with the order of reflexion whereby a fluctuation is superimposed, the type of which cannot easily be related to the reflexion order. Moreover, each of the reflexions is obviously laterally split into three components. An explanation of these characteristics can be given with the aid of a distinct model, assuming that the collagen fibrils have definitely varying diameters along their axis, whereby paracrystalline distortions appear, represented by nematic fluctuations. Additionally, there i…

A molecular electron density theory study of the chemo- and regioselective [3 + 2] cycloaddition reactions between trifluoroacetonitrile N-oxide and …

2018

Abstract The [3 + 2] cycloaddition (32CA) reaction between trifluoroacetonitrile N-oxide (NO 7) and 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-3-thioxocyclobutan-1-one (THK 12) as well as the self-dimerization of NO 7 as a competitive pathway were studied within the Molecular Electron Density Theory (MEDT) using several DFT functionals together with def2-TZVP basis set. Taking CCSD(T)/TZVP activation energies as reference, among the employed functionals, just the B2PLYP-D3(BJ) one is able to portray complete predominance of 32CA reaction over self-dimerization process in excellent agreement with the experimental outcomes. Analysis of the global reactivity indices permits to characterize NO 7 and THK 12 as a stron…
