AbstractThe two Caribbean states, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, have experienced similar natural forces since the 18th century, including hurricanes and earthquakes. Although, both countries seem to be two of the most prone of all Latin American and Caribbean countries to natural hazard events, historically, Haiti tends to be more vulnerable to natural forces. The purpose of this article is to understand to what extent geohazards shape demographic changes. With the aid of CERES/TRMM (Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System/Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) data, sampling problems that may impact the construction of anisotropic models have been investigated. We show the influence of the sun-orbit geometry, which causes a lack of measurements in forward and backward scattering directions at large viewing zenith angles, and how cloud properties retrieval algorithms as obtained from the Visible Infrared Scanner (VIRS) also affect sampling. In continuation of a publication by Pierau and Mueller (1960), theoretical and experimental comparisons are made about the energy content of seismic waves for central and linear shotpoint arrangements. The following results are obtained: Using shotpoint arrangements as chosen for the investigation, the energy content of deep reflections is greater in linear than in central pattern shooting, provided that the total quantity of charge is the same in both cases. Furthermore the seismograms obtained with linear shotpoint arrays are less disturbed by surface waves than those obtained in central pattern shooting. Abstract An example of gravity inversion and interpretation is presented which demonstrates how a priori information can be used to derive reliable, though complex models. In this case, the geometry of the studied model profile has been constructed on the basis of seismic and geological data. The densities used in the forward calculations were obtained from laboratory measurements of drill cores, from density-velocity relationships, and from Nettleton’s method of fitting gravity and topography. The seasonal occurrence of Dactylogyrus amphibothrium and Discocotyle sagittata from the gills of ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus) and whitefish (Coregonus acronius), respectively was studied in Lake Yli-Kitka, a large oligotrophic lake in Northeast Finland. The lake, located near the Arctic Circle, is ice-covered for 7-8 months of the year. The prevalence of D. amphibothrium infection was 70.7% and remained high throughout all size-classes of fish. The length distribution and developmental stages of the worms indicated two generations per year.
