Measurement of azimuthal hadron asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off unpolarised nucleons

2014

Spin-averaged asymmetries in the azimuthal distributions of positive and negative hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering were measured using the CERN SPS muon beam at $160$ GeV/c and a $^6$LiD target. The amplitudes of the three azimuthal modulations $\cos\phi_h$, $\cos2\phi_h$ and $\sin\phi_h$ were obtained binning the data separately in each of the relevant kinematic variables $x$, $z$ or $p_T^{\,h}$ and binning in a three-dimensional grid of these three variables. The amplitudes of the $\cos \phi_h$ and $\cos 2\phi_h$ modulations show strong kinematic dependencies both for positive and negative hadrons.

Intracellular accumulation of l-Arg, kinetics of transport, and potassium leak conductance in oocytes from Xenopus laevis expressing hCAT-1, hCAT-2A,…

2004

AbstractCationic amino acid transporters play an important role in the intracellular supply of l-Arg and the generation of nitric oxide. Since the transport of l-Arg is voltage-dependent, we aimed at determining the intracellular l-Arg concentration and describing the transport of l-Arg in terms of Michaelis–Menten kinetics, taking into account membrane voltage. The human isoforms of the cationic amino acid transporters, hCAT-1, hCAT-2A, and hCAT-2B, were expressed in oocytes from Xenopus laevis and studied with the voltage clamp technique and in tracer experiments. We found that l-Arg was concentrated intracellularly by all hCAT isoforms and that influx and efflux, in the steady state of e…

A physical activity program dedicated to adolescents

2014

Adolescence is a life stage in which the development of individuality and self-identity occurs. The recent study of the SIP evaluated the life style in adolescents, highlighting the low participation to continuative sports programs and the high incidence to sports drop out, interesting more than 30% of adolescents. These problems are partially linked to low compliance of adolescents to coaches training, partially to the request of a sport close to adolescents requirements. However sports participation is beneficial for physical and psychological development of adolescents. Sports programs promote responsible social behaviours and greater academic success, confidence in personal physical abi…

Pressure dependence of the low-frequency dielectric constant of KNbO_3

1997

The effect of pressure on the low-frequency dielectric constant, $\epsilon_0$, of single crystals of KNbO_3 is investigated by means of capacitance measurements. The dielectric constant increases with pressure up to 22.5 kbar, where it exhibits a large value ($\epsilon_0$ = 5000), and then decreases. This change in its behaviour is related to a phase transition induced by pressure. On decompression, the samples do not revert back to the ambient pressure phase.

Patterns of poverty among elderly Americans: a Latent Class Markov Model

2017

ABSTRACTThis article studies poverty persistence and the role of social security programmes on poverty among elderly in the US. We use a Latent Markov model to disentangle unobserved heterogeneity and state dependence. Because of its dynamic nature, unobserved heterogeneity is modelled to vary over time. This allows to capture different latent states of poverty that change over time. Result indicates the existence of three unobserved types evolving over time according to their propensity to be poor. Moreover, a strong persistence in poverty especially for women, individuals living alone and ethnic minorities is found. Finally, the estimates indicate that giving social assistance tends to re…

P50 sensory gating and smoking in the general population

2011

P50 gating is a major functional biomarker in research on schizophrenia and other psychiatric conditions with high smoking prevalence. It is used as endophenotype for studying nicotinic systems genetics and as surrogate endpoint measure for drug development of nicotinic agonists. Surprisingly, little is known about P50 gating in the general population and the relationship to smoking-related characteristics. In this multicenter study at six academic institutions throughout Germany, n = 907 never-smokers (NS < 20 cigarettes/lifetime), n = 463 light smokers (LS) with Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) ≥ 4 and n = 353 heavy smokers (HS, FTND < 4) were randomly selected from the gene…

Association of ADH4 genetic variants with alcohol dependence risk and related phenotypes: results from a larger multicenter association study

2011

Genetic variants of the alcohol-metabolizing enzyme ADH4, located on chromosome 4q22-4q23, have been related to alcohol dependence (AD) risk in previous research. The aim of this association study in a large multicenter sample of alcohol-dependent individuals and controls is to confirm ADH4 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and haplotype association with AD and relevant related phenotypes. One thousand, six hundred and twenty-two (1622) inpatient subjects and 1469 control subjects with DSM-IV. AD from four addiction treatment centres were included. Characteristics of AD and related phenotypes including alcohol withdrawal, Cloninger's type I and II and first ages of drinking, regular drin…

Effects on arterial blood pressure of the methanol extracts from differentTeucriumspecies

1997

Methanol extracts of the leaves and stems of two Teucrium species (T. pumillum L. and T. buxifolium L.) have been tested for their effects on resting arterial blood pressure. Both T. pumillum L. and T. buxifolium L. extracts reduced mean arterial blood pressure in a dose dependent manner when administered i.v. to urethane anaesthetized normotensive rats. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Pressure Dependence of the Low-Frequency Dielectric Constant in III-VI Semiconductors

1999

In this work we report on the pressure dependence of the low-frequency dielectric constant parallel to the c-axis (e∥) in GaS, GaSe, and InSe as obtained from direct capacitance measurements. A large increase of e∥ with pressure has been observed. The pressure change of the lattice polarizability along the c-axis is calculated in the framework of a rigid-ion model from the change of the angle of the anion–cation bond with respect to the layer plane, which results in a slight increase of the lattice contribution. Consequently, the pressure behaviour of e∥ is proposed to arise from the large increase of the electronic polarizability along the c-axis. This is explained through a decrease of th…

Phase transitions in modified Na 1/2 Bi 1/2 TiO 3 ‐SrTiO 3 solid solutions

2009

Continuous transfer from relaxor to normal ferroelectric phase transition is found in Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-SrTiO3-PbTiO3 if concentration of PbTiO3 increases. The relaxor properties in NBT solid solutions are described by the power law and Vogel-Fulcher relationship, and concentration dependence of the relevant parameters is discussed.
