Convivere con le emergenze. Design e nuovi scenari domestici

2023

The contribution leads a reflection around the physical-relational processes that have always characterized the domestic interior and that the recent state of health emergency Covid-19 (and the even more recent Russian-Ukrainian war conflict) has catalysed and accentuated, if not exasperated, offering new complex and sometimes contradictory visions. The contribution points to focus on new meanings and new projections, in terms of interactions and relationships, assumed by the consolidated physical-cultural criteria of proximity/remoteness, familiarity/foreignness, inside/outside. Within these profound transformations, an opportunity and a new role are looming for the disciplines of design. …

A micellar multitasking device: sensing pH windows and gauging the lipophilicity of drugs with fluorescent signals.

2010

A multitasking fluorescent device can be obtained by forming micelles of Triton X-100, containing a lipophilic macrocyclic Cu(2+) complex and the coordinating fluorophore Coumarin 343 (C343), which features a COOH moiety. At low pH the two micellised components do not interact, and the fluorescence of Courmarin 343 (C343) is intense. At intermediate pH, C343 is deprotonated and coordinates to the Cu(2+) centre in its apical position, with fluorescence quenching. At higher pH the deprotonated C343 is displaced from Cu(2+) by the formation of an OH(-) complex, and the fluorescence is revived. This allows the system to carry out its first task as it behaves as an "on-off-on" fluorescent sensor…

Improvement of Hall Effect Current Transducer Metrological Performances in the Presence of Harmonic Distortion

2010

The performance of Hall effect current transducers (HECTs), under distorted waveform conditions, is usually characterized by means of a frequency response test. In this paper, it was investigated if frequency response is able to correctly evaluate the ratio and the phase errors under distorted conditions. Two HECTs, with the accuracy class level of 1% and 0.5%, respectively, were experimentally characterized under two conditions: 1) sinusoidal excitation with frequencies ranging from 50 to 750 Hz, which is the well-known frequency response test, and 2) nonsinusoidal excitation using fundamental frequency and one harmonic with adjusted amplitude and phase shift. It was found that ratio and p…

Myocardial G Protein Receptor–Coupled Kinase Expression Correlates With Functional Parameters and Clinical Severity in Advanced Heart Failure

2010

In heart failure (HF), sympathetic hyperactivation induces deleterious effects in myocardial β-adrenergic signaling, with receptor down-regulation and desensitization mediated by G protein receptor-coupled kinases (GRKs). We hypothesised that changes in GRK isoforms may be associated with clinical status in advanced HF, using the Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (INTERMACS) scale. We included 31 patients with advanced HF undergoing transplantation. According to INTERMACS profiles, mRNA and protein levels of GRK isoforms in left ventricular (LV) myocardium were analyzed and compared with nonfailing LV samples. In failing LV myocardium, GRK2 and GRK5 (but not G…

Oxidation of organics in water in microfluidic electrochemical reactors: Theoretical model and experiments

2011

The electrochemical oxidation of organics in water performed in micro reactors on boron doped diamond (BDD) anode was investigated both theoretically and experimentally in order to find the influence of various operative parameters on the conversion and the current efficiency CE of the process. The electrochemical oxidation of formic acid (FA) was selected as a model case. High conversions for a single passage of the electrolytic solution inside the cell were obtained by operating with proper residence times and low distances between cathode and anode. The effect of initial concentration, flow rate and current density was investigated in detail. Theoretical predictions were in very good agr…

Anodic abatement of organic pollutants in water in micro reactors

2010

The electrochemical oxidation of oxalic acid (OA) was performed in a micro flow cell equipped with a boron doped diamond (BDD) anode. This preliminary study demonstrates that a flow cell with a micrometric distance between the cathode and the anode can be used to perform the electrochemical treatment of waters contaminated by organic pollutants in the absence of added supporting electrolytes with high abatements. The effect of the distance between the cathode and the anode, the flow rate and the current density on the abatement of oxalic acid and on the current efficiency was in particular studied.

Multilevel assessment of mental stress via network physiology paradigm using consumer wearable devices

2019

Mental stress is a physiological condition that has a strong negative impact on the quality of life, affecting both the physical and the mental health. For such a reason, accurate measurements of stress level can be helpful to provide mechanisms for prevention and treatment. This paper proposes a procedure for the classification of different mental stress levels by using physiological signals provided by low invasive wearable devices. 17 healthy volunteers participated in this study. Three different mental states were elicited in them: a resting condition, a stressful cognitive state, and a sustained attention task. The acquired physiological signals were: a one lead electrocardiogram (ECG)…

A framework for behavior-based detection of user substitution in a mobile context

2007

Personal mobile devices, such as mobile phones, smartphones, and communicators can be easily lost or stolen. Due to the functional abilities of these devices, their use by unintended persons may result in severe security breaches concerning private or corporate data and services. Organizations develop their security policy and employ preventive techniques to combat unauthorized use. Current solutions, however, are still breakable and there is a strong need for means to detect user substitution when it happens. A crucial issue in designing such means is to define the measures to be monitored. In this paper, a structured conceptual framework for mobile-user substitution detection is proposed.…
