Gender, self-confidence, sports, and preferences for competition

2016

In the last years, research in economics has shown a gender gap in the willingness to compete with women shying away from competition more than men do. This gender difference in preferences towards competition has been considered a critical factor in explaining the small percentage of women found in top-level positions in business, science, or politics. Therefore, in order to improve women job prospects, research and policy interventions try to offer incentives for women to increase competitive behavior. However, other recent studies specifically point at men¿s competitive behavior as the responsible for some of the financial markets malfunctions, suggesting that an influx of talented women…

Real Time Stereo Matching Using Two Step Zero-Mean SAD and Dynamic Programing

2018

Dense depth map extraction is a dynamic research field in a computer vision that tries to recover three-dimensional information from a stereo image pair. A large variety of algorithms has been developed. The local methods based on block matching that are prevalent due to the linear computational complexity and easy implementation. This local cost is used on global methods as graph cut and dynamic programming in order to reduce sensitivity to local to occlusion and uniform texture. This paper proposes a new method for matching images based on a two-stage of block matching as local cost function and dynamic programming as energy optimization approach. In our work introduce the two stage of th…

Brief maternal separation procedures occurring early in life affect learning and memory in adult Wistar rats: sex-related differences in cognitive be…

2015

Adverse life events during the neonatal period result in long-term effects on physiology and behavior. Early postnatal experiences, such as a modification of the mother–infant interaction, may influence the development of neural systems that underlie the expression of neuroendocrine and behavioural responses to environmental challenges. The present study was carried out to investigate the consequences of a brief, maternal separation on declarative and spatial memory, focusing on sex related alteration due to the discrete effects that hormones may play on the brain circuits. Our results indicate that a brief, daily maternal separation results in sexually-dimorphic cognitive alterations that …

An analysis of the different patterns of 1:1 interactions between educational professionals and their students with varying abilities in inclusive cl…

2012

The purpose of this study was to examine the different types and patterns of 1:1 interactions provided by general educators, special educators and paraprofessionals to children with mild disabilities (n = 13), severe disabilities (n = 13), and children without disabilities (n = 13) in inclusive classrooms. General educators, special educators, and paraprofessionals' 1:1 interactions with students in three comparison groups were recorded in 17 elementary and middle school classrooms using a partial interval observation system. We found significant differences with respect to interaction frequency and content. Teachers and paraprofessionals had consistently more 1:1 interactions with students…

Investigating the effects of musical training on functional brain development with a novel Melodic MMN paradigm.

2013

Sensitivity to changes in various musical features was investigated by recording the mismatch negativity (MMN) auditory event-related potential (ERP) in musically trained and nontrained children semi-longitudinally at the ages of 9, 11, and 13 years. The responses were recorded using a novel Melodic multi-feature paradigm which allows fast (<15 min) recording of an MMN profile for changes in melody, rhythm, musical key, timbre, tuning and timing. When compared to the nontrained children, the musically trained children displayed enlarged MMNs for the melody modulations by the age 13 and for the rhythm modulations, timbre deviants and slightly mistuned tones already at the age of 11. Also, a …

Intersexual competition among humans: prosocial towards the opposite sex and proself towards the same sex?

2017

In a research conducted on a sample of participants from three countries (N = 256): Poland, Ukraine and Denmark, a hypothesis of the moderating impact of other person sex on the level of social value orientation of men and women was tested. The study applied the now rarely used method of measuring social value orientation: the Warsaw Method, which was expected to reveal more subtle differences between men and women than those observed in the studies using the most popular social value orientation measurement tools, such as decomposed games. The direction of the observed relationship proved to be compatible with the predictions resulting from the phenomenon of intrasexual competition for a p…
