Usefulness of quantitative peritumoural perfusion and proton spectroscopic magnetic resonance imaging evaluation in differentiating brain gliomas fro…
2016
Objectives The purpose of our study was to evaluate whether peritumoural perfusion weighted and proton spectroscopic magnetic resonance imaging can be used in differentiating between primary gliomas and solitary metastases. Methods Ten low-grade gliomas, eight high-grade gliomas and 10 metastases were prospectively evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging, dynamic susceptibility contrast enhanced perfusion imaging and single-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy before surgical resection or stereotactic biopsy. Maximal relative cerebral blood volume values were calculated drawing three regions of interest of 2 cm2 in the non-enhancing peritumoural areas. Maximal relative cerebral bl…
Analysis of visually guided eye movements in subjects after whiplash injury
2011
Abstract Objective The aims of present research were to analyze the visually guided eye movements of subjects suffering from the consequences of whiplash injury and the possibility to differentiate patients from feigning subject. We analyzed the role of video-nystagmography for clinical and forensic aspects. Methods It was a prospective case–control study. Detailed history was taken and patients were thoroughly investigated. Smooth pursuit and saccadic eye movements were assessed in 33 patients affected by imbalance following a whiplash injury. A control group of 20 subjects was also evaluated. All tests were executed in neutral neck position and after left and right trunk rotation. Results…
Dual-Energy CT Material Density Iodine Quantification for Distinguishing Vascular From Nonvascular Renal Lesions: Normalization Reduces Intermanufact…
2019
OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a single, uniform normalized iodine threshold reduces variability and enables reliable differentiation between vascular and nonvascular renal lesions independent of the dual-energy CT (DECT) platform used. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In this retrospective, HIPAA-compliant, institutional review board-approved study, 247 patients (156 men, 91 women; mean age ± SD, 67 ± 12 years old) with 263 renal lesions (193 nonvascular, 70 vascular) underwent unenhanced single- energy and contrast-enhanced DECT scans. One hundred and six nonvascular and 38 vascular lesions were scanned on two dual-source DECT (dsDECT) scanners, and 87 nonvascular and…
Metabolomics provide new insights on lung cancer staging and discrimination from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
2014
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer are widespread lung diseases. Cigarette smoking is a high risk factor for both the diseases. COPD may increase the risk of developing lung cancer. Thus, it is crucial to be able to distinguish between these two pathological states, especially considering the early stages of lung cancer. Novel diagnostic and monitoring tools are required to properly determine lung cancer progression because this information directly impacts the type of the treatment prescribed. In this study, serum samples collected from 22 COPD and 77 lung cancer (TNM stages I, II, III, and IV) patients were analyzed. Then, a collection of NMR metabolic fingerprin…
Diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of reversible ischaemic deficits of the brainstem
2002
Objectives: To evaluate the sensitivity of diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of clinically suspected reversible ischaemic deficits of the brainstem. Methods: A total of 158 consecutive patients presenting with acute signs of brainstem dysfunction were investigated using EPI diffusion weighted MRI within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms. High resolution T1 and T2 weighted imaging was performed as a follow up after a median of six days Results: Fourteen of the 158 patients had a complete clinical recovery within 24 hours (transitory ischaemic attack (TIA)), and 19 patients recovered in less than one week (prolonged reversible neurological deficit (RIND)). …
Ultrastructural patterns of primary ciliar dyskinesia syndrome.
2005
Clinical presentation, ciliary ultrastructure, and nasal mucociliary transport by a radioisotopic technique were analyzed in 14 Kartagener syndrome patients. In this study the most common pattern was the absence of outer and inner dynein arms in 57% of cases. Also reported are 14% patients with short inner dynein arms. A total of 29% of the patients showed normal dynein arms. Mucociliary stasis was observed in 13 cases. Primary ciliary dyskinesia syndrome and Kartagener syndrome are clinically homogeneous and morphologically heterogeneous. The authors conclude that a typical clinical presentation with an altered mucociliary transport obtained by radioisotopic technique is diagnostic althoug…
Evidence for an overlap syndrome of autoimmune hepatitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis.
1996
Abstract Background/Aims: Autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis are chronic liver diseases with probable autoimmune background. Overlapping features have been described for primary biliary cirrhosis and autoimmune hepatitis. In contrast, there have been only a few case reports on an overlap of autoimmune hepatitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis. Methods: We describe three male patients with clinical and histological overlapping features of primary sclerosing cholangitis and autoimmune hepatitis. Results: All initially asymptomatic patients had elevated levels of aminotransferases, alkaline phosphatase, γ-glutamyltranspeptidase and IgG. Anti-n…
Differential metallothionein expression in oral lichen planus and amalgam-associated oral lichenoid lesions
2017
Background Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease mediated by T cells, which manifests as reticular (white) or erosive (red) lesions, that are eventually painful. Oral lichenoid lesion (OLL) are distinguished from OLP by the presence of precipitating factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the presence of metallothionein, which is involved in anti-apoptotic pathways and the anti-oxidative response, could serve as a differential diagnostic for OLP and OLL. Material and Methods We evaluated the expression of metallothionein in 40 cases of OLP and 20 cases of OLL using immunohistochemistry. Results and Conclusions White OLP has higher concentrations of metall…
Expression of Peripheral Node Addressins by Plasmacytic Plaque of Children, APACHE, TRAPP, and Primary Cutaneous Angioplasmacellular Hyperplasia.
2018
High-endothelial venules are a common feature of 3 types of cutaneous pseudolymphomas: pretibial lymphoplasmacytic plaque (PLP) of children, acral pseudolymphomatous angiokeratoma of children (APACHE), and T-cell rich angiomatoid polypoid pseudolymphoma (TRAPP). In addition, primary cutaneous angioplasmacellular hyperplasia (PCAH) overlaps with these other 3 conditions. We intend to study the expression of peripheral node addressins in PLP, APACHE, TRAPP, and PCAH. We studied 1 case of PLP, 2 cases of APACHE, 2 cases of TRAPP, and 2 cases of PCAH. Immunostainings for MECA-79 and WT-1 were obtained in all cases. All cases showed a dense lymphohistiocytic dermal inflammatory infiltrate with a…
Circumscribed palmar or plantar hypokeratosis: a distinctive epidermal malformation of the palms or soles.
2002
Abstract Background: Epidermal malformations of the skin include a group of heterogeneous developmental defects that result from errors in morphogenesis of the epidermis during intrauterine life. Objective: The purpose of this study was to report the clinical and histopathologic features of a distinctive epidermal malformation involving the skin of the palms or soles. Methods: Ten patients were included in this study. All of them showed the same clinical features that consisted of a solitary circumscribed and circular area of erythematous depressed skin on the palm or on the sole. Diagnosis was confirmed by histopathologic study. Results: All patients were middle aged or elderly. Nine patie…
