An electron diffraction study of deposited docosanoic acid monolayers

1991

Docosanoic acid monolayers deposited on thin polymer films under different water surface conditions have been investigated using transmission electron diffraction at normal and tilted incidence. Diffraction patterns obtained from the L2 and L2' phase are quite similar, but distinctly different to samples coated from the CS phase. The former were consistent with molecules perpendicular to the substrate, arranged in a texture of grains with unusual orthorhombic packing. There is evidence for a phase transition from a liquid crystalline phase on the water surface.

High-pressure/high-temperature phase diagram of zinc

2018

The phase diagram of zinc (Zn) has been explored up to 140 GPa and 6000K, by combining optical observations, x-ray diffraction, and ab initio calculations. In the pressure range covered by this study, Zn is found to retain a hexagonal close-packed (hcp) crystal symmetry up to the melting temperature. The known decrease of the axial ratio (c/a) of the hcp phase of Zn under compression is observed in x-ray diffraction experiments from 300K up to the melting temperature. The pressure at which c/a reaches root 3 (approximate to 10GPa) is slightly affected by temperature. When this axial ratio is reached, we observed that single crystals of Zn, formed at high temperature, break into multiple pol…

Boson peak and hybridization of acoustic modes with vibrations of nanometric heterogeneities in glasses

2007

9 pages; International audience; The low-frequency dynamics in glasses is compared with that in icosahedral quasicrystals. For both arrangements of matter, the existence of nanometric heterogeneities, implying the existence of a nanometric inhomogeneous elastic network, is expected to play a crucial role. Thanks to this comparison, mostly based on inelastic x-ray (neutron) scattering data, it is proposed that the excess of vibrational density of states observed in both materials is due to the hybridization of longitudinal and transverse acoustic modes with modes localized around the heterogeneities.

Diffraction by m-bonacci gratings

2015

We present a simple diffraction experiment with m-bonacci gratings as a new interesting generalization of the Fibonacci ones. Diffraction by these nonconventional structures is proposed as a motivational strategy to introduce students to basic research activities. The Fraunhofer diffraction patterns are obtained with the standard equipment present in most undergraduate physics labs and are compared with those obtained with regular periodic gratings. We show that m-bonacci gratings produce discrete Fraunhofer patterns characterized by a set of diffraction peaks which positions are related to the concept of a generalized golden mean. A very good agreement is obtained between experimental and …

Computation of near field diffraction by a dielectric grating: a comparison with experiments

1995

We use an eigenmode method to compute the near field diffracted by one-dimensional dielectric gratings. We present a set of easily programmable recurrence relations that give the diffracted field from the incident one. The numerical results are compared with the experimental images obtained with the Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscope (PSTM).

Wavelength-compensated Fourier and Fresnel transformers: a unified approach

2007

We recognize that one can adapt any dispersion-compensated broadband optical Fourier transformer to achieve wavelength compensation in the Fresnel diffraction region just by inserting a diffractive lens at the input plane and vice versa. This unification procedure is employed in a second stage in the design of a novel hybrid (diffractive-refractive) optical setup that provides, in a sequential way, nearly wavelength-independent Fresnel diffraction patterns in the irradiance of the object transmittance.

White-light imaging with fractal zone plates

2007

We report the achievement of the first images to our knowledge obtained with a fractal zone plates (FraZPs). FraZPs are diffractive lenses characterized by the fractal structure of their foci. This property predicts an improved performance of FraZPs as image forming devices with an extended depth of field and predicts a reduced chromatic aberration under white-light illumination. These theoretical predictions are confirmed experimentally in this work. We show that the polychromatic modulation transfer function of a FraZP affected by defocus is about two times better than one corresponding to a Fresnel zone plate.

Cooperative atomic motion probed by ultrafast transmission electron diffraction

2015

In numerous solids exhibiting broken symmetry ground states, changes in electronic (spin) structure are accompanied by structural changes. Femtosecond time-resolved techniques recently contributed many important insights into the origin of their ground states by tracking dynamics of the electronic subsystem with femtosecond light pulses. Moreover, several studies of structural dynamics in systems with periodic lattice modulation (PLD) were performed. Since intensities of the super-lattice diffraction peaks are in the first approximation proportional to the square of the PLD amplitude, their temporal dynamics provides access to cooperative atomic motion. This process takes place on a fractio…

Geometrical super resolved lensless imaging

2011

In the field of super resolution researchers are trying to overcome both the diffraction as well as the geometrical bounds of an imaging system. In this paper we present a recently developed approach that aims to overcome the geometrical bounds while using a unified spatial light modulator (SLM) based lensless configuration.

Imaging spin filter for electrons based on specular reflection from iridium (001)

2013

Abstract As Stern–Gerlach type spin filters do not work with electrons, spin analysis of electron beams is accomplished by spin-dependent scattering processes based on spin–orbit or exchange interaction. Existing polarimeters are single-channel devices characterized by an inherently low figure of merit (FoM) of typically 10 −4 –10 −3 . This single-channel approach is not compatible with parallel imaging microscopes and also not with modern electron spectrometers that acquire a certain energy and angular interval simultaneously. We present a novel type of polarimeter that can transport a full image by making use of k -parallel conservation in low-energy electron diffraction. We studied specul…
