Traducción e ideología en Legiones y Falanges/Legioni e Falangi

2019

This paper aims to demonstrate the link between the press and the diffusion of an ideology through the practice of translation, as the discursive product of a complex communicative situation, conditioned by the contexts of the author, the translator and the recipient of the translation given that the context determines the identity of the locutors, a translation always reflects an ideology, a “socially shared belief system” by the members of a “collective of social actors” (van dijk, 2005: 10) This paper will explore how the translator selects the discursive substance according to the ideology of the elites of the totalitarian power, who exploit discourse as an instrument to influence the b…

A functional analysis of the Finnish 2012 presidential debates

2016

English: Functional theory of political campaign discourse has been applied widely to analysis political campaign discourse, especially political debates. However, there have been claims that the theory is not a suitable tool for analysing political debates outside the United States. In this paper the functional theory of political campaign discourse is applied to the analysis of Finnish 2012 presidential debates. Legiones y Falanges: construcción lingüístico-discursiva del enemigo

2017

The press, in addition to reflecting a “vocation of information “, performs a series of social functions, among which the formation of citizens and of critical recipients of mediatic discourse stands out. Yet, especially in some socio-political contexts, the press can be a vehicle for a certain type of ideology, becoming an instrument to orient the recipient or, in extreme cases, manipulate them, in order to justify or reinforce the image of a dominant ideological group. In this sense, the magazine Legiones y Falanges (1940-43) is exemplary, since, with a clearly populist discourse, it aims to extol the ideological foundations of Franco’s dictatorship. In other words, the main objective of …

Vers une modélisation rhétorique de la mauvaise foi?

2022

This paper offers a view of bad faith based on the study of several figures of speech: apodioxis, argument from authority, prolepsis, ratiocination, aposiopesis, comparison, etc. We try and establish formal criteria to distinguish bad faith, at the same time acknowledging that it also resorts to elements of textual continuity, cultural references and values and implications that are not necessarily manifest. Alongside well established figures of speech, we also describe more elaborate types of arguments such as narrative conglobation, lexical arsenal, identity argument, or psychological strategies like denial.

2021

This paper reconstructs the debate raised by the thesis on cinema proposed by Pier Paolo Pasolini. In particular, two basic notions are addressed: the idea of cinema as a 'written language of reality' and the role of free indirect discourse for the establishment of a 'poetry cinema'. Pasolini is put into dialogue with Gilles Deleuze, Paolo Fabbri and other semiologists.

La baia dei sogni: poesia e memoria pubblica in Migrante di Wole Soyinka

2019

On March 10, 2015, the mayor of Catania, Enzo Bianco, inaugurated a monumental mausoleum in the city's cemetery to commemorate 17 people who had lost their lives to the Mediterranean the year before. Their corpses were found in the waters around Lampedusa, whose small cemetery, in former mayor Giusi Nicolini's words, could not spatially 'welcome' any more bodies to bury. Not only did Bianco offer them a burial place in his city but he also had engraved on each of the 17 graves a verse of Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka's recent poem Migrants, a powerful reflection on exile and migration as an act of resistance, written for the poetry anthology Migrazioni/Migrations. Bianco also commissioned a s…

European Security Under Threat: Mediating the Crisis and Constructing the Other

2017

Departing from the assumption that discourse is both socially constituted and constitutive, and that social reality is co-constructed by the institutions of mass communication, this chapter takes under scrutiny media representation of the recent refugee crisis in Europe. The objective behind it is to maximise the validity of the Media Proximization Approach (MPA), drawing on the insights from Critical Discourse Studies, cognitive linguistics and corpus linguistics, in explicating how the media can potentially impact on the salience of issues and thus on public perception of problems and threats along with measures to be taken to deal with them. Examining the data from Poland, a European Uni…

2020

During four decades of his service in the Church, Valentin Felixovich Voino-Yasenetsky (Archbishop Luke of Simferopol and Crimea) delivered numerous sermons, most of which were recorded. Later, they began to appear in the form of publications and became the object of research by representatives of various scientific disciplines. In his sermons, apart from other issues, the preacher paid special attention to the family and education of the younger generation. This article is an attempt to analyze the religious discourse of the Archbishop, using the example of the sermon “On the family and education of children”, delivered by him on 13 October 1947.
