This article summarizes the activities of the four-week whole body dissection course the main authors participated in in August 2016 at the dissection hall of the University of Malta (UoM). Our team comprised 10 second-year medicine students from University of Palermo chosen among who had passed the Human Anatomy exam brilliantly. The need to move to the UoM to take part in such activity derives from the lack of practice approach in Italian schools of medicine, focused mostly on the theoretical studies, neglecting practical experience. Isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery: a case report and literature review

Isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery is rare; it is predominantly observed in men with the highest incidence in those over 40 years old. Contrast-enhanced multi-detector computed tomography is considered essential for the diagnosis, therapeutic management and follow-up. The therapeutic approach ranges from conservative medical treatment to surgery or endovascular stent placement, but there are, to date, no approved guidelines. We report the case of a 68-year old man who entered our Emergency Department just for mild abdominal pain, which later proved to be due to acute dissection of the superior mesenteric artery.

Iatrogenic pulmonary artery dissection in patient with ostium secundum interatrial septum defect

Pulmonary artery dissection is a rare and lethal condition. Few cases are reported in the literature, and most are derived from autopsies. In most cases, pulmonary artery dissection is a complication of chronic pulmonary hypertension leading to pulmonary artery aneurysm but there are other causes. We describe a case of iatrogenic pulmonary artery dissection in an elderly patient with ostium secundum defect. In particular, we describe the role of cardiac magnetic resonance in making this diagnosis and guiding future therapeutic decisions.

The advent of endoscopic resection (ER) techniques has enabled gastroenterologists to remove premalignant or neoplastic lesions throughout the gastrointestinal tract. This review discusses the indications and the several techniques of ER in early carcinomas of the esophagus and stomach. Before ER is performed an accurate evaluation of patients and careful staging of lesions is mandatory. After ER of the neoplasia histological assessment of the entire specimen with detailed histological analysis of layer infiltration is crucial. Endoscopic microsurgical dissection of the esophagus. Results in an animal model.

Blunt dissection of the esophagus is considered the least invasive technique in the treatment of either benign or malignant diseases of the esophagus. Its disadvantage is that it has to be carried out blindly. The results may be uncontrollable hemorrhage, unrecognized injuries to the trachea, and damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve. In order to reduce the degree of invasiveness a new endoscopic microsurgical technique for the dissection of the esophagus has been developed and tried out in animals.
