Banking in Spain

2016

This chapter aims to explore recent developments in the Spanish banking industry and the measures adopted in recent years to correct the imbalances that built up during the expansion, in order to give an up-to-date picture of the sector in the international context. To this end, the chapter is divided into four sections. The section following the Introduction examines the importance of the banking sector in the Spanish economy using various indicators of banking penetration. The next section, “Characteristics of the Spanish Banking Sector: Recent Trends”, looks at key features of the banking sector and its evolution in terms of a range of measures, including margins, profitability, efficien…

Understanding Economic Growth in Ghana in Comparative Perspective

2019

Ghana has experienced a decade of solid and exceptionally high growth. Between 2005 and 2015, income nearly doubled. This paper analyzes the factors driving this impressive growth performance, using tools such as structural change decompositions and growth regressions. For the comparative perspective, the paper compares Ghana with its structural and aspirational peers. The paper finds that the contribution of structural change to growth has been limited and attributes this to labor that was freed up in agriculture not being absorbed by high-productivity sectors. Looking at factors that drove growth since 2000, financial development and infrastructure had the most important impacts. A benchm…

Interest rate gaps in an uncertain global context: why "too" low (high) for "so" long?

2022

We study the behaviour of real interest rate gaps-i.e. periods of real interest rates above (below) the natural interest rate-and link their length with a set of key observable determinants. Using quarterly data for 13 OECD countries over (close to) the last 60 years, we find that global risk-taking, CPI inflation, (un)conventional monetary policy, and income redistribution crucially shape the duration of both events. However, while labour-related supply-side factors appear to affect the length of positive interest rate gaps, the adoption of an inflation targeting regime and the current account balance seem to explain the duration of negative interest rate gaps. Our results suggest that the…

An empirical analysis of growth volatility: A Markov chain approach

2005

This paper studies the determinants of growth rate volatility, focusing on the effect of level of GDP, structural change and the size of economy. First we provide a graphical analysis based on nonparametric techniques, then a quantitative analysis which follows the distribution dynamics approach. Growth volatility appears to (i) decrease with per capita GDP, (ii) increase with the share of the agricultural sector on GDP and, (iii) decrease with the size of the economy, measured by a combination of total GDP and trade openness. However, we show that the explanatory power of per capita GDP tends to vanish when we control for the size of the economy. © 2005 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Growth Volatility Indices

2006

We study the determinants of growth rate volatility in a multisector economy where sectors are heterogeneous in their individual volatility. We propose a model where aggregate volatility is explained by structural change and the size of the economy. We present a first attempt to test these predictions measuring growth volatility by indices based on Markov transition matrices. Growth volatility appears to (i) decrease with total GDP and (ii) increase with the share of the agricultural sector on GDP, although some nonlinearities appear. Trade openness, which we relate to the size of the economy, also plays a role. In accordance with our model, the explanatory power of per capita GDP, a releva…

Paplašināta spektra β-laktamāzes kodējošo gēnu noteikšana Escherichia coli kultūrās, kas izolētas no mājas cūkām

2017

Darba mērķis bija izpētīt Pārtikas drošības, dzīvnieku veselības un vides zinātniskajā institūtā „BIOR” izolētas Escherichia coli kultūras, nosakot TEM, OXA, SHV, CTX-M I, CTX-M II, CTX-M IV, CMY II un DHA tipa β-laktamāzes gēnu klātbūtni baktēriju kultūru paraugos. Bakalaura darbs izstrādāts 2017. gadā zinātniskā institūta “BIOR” Dzīvnieku slimību diagnostikas laboratorijas Mikrobioloģijas nodaļā un Molekulārās bioloģijas nodaļā. Pētāmie paraugi (Escherichia coli kultūras) bija iegūti no mājas cūku (Sus scrofa domestica) aklo zarnu paraugiem 2016. un 2017. gada VPP “AgroBioRes” ietvaros. Kopā tika analizēti 68 Escherichia coli kultūru paraugi no dažādām saimniecībām. β-lactamāzeskodējošo g…

Chlorophyll and Suspended Solids Estimation in Portuguese Reservoirs (Aguieira and Alqueva) from Sentinel-2 Imagery

2021

Reservoirs have been subject to anthropogenic stressors, becoming increasingly degraded. The evaluation of ecological potential in reservoirs is remarkably challenging, and consistent and regular monitoring using the traditional in situ methods defined in the WFD is often time- and money-consuming. Alternatively, remote sensing offers a low-cost, high frequency, and practical complement to these methods. This paper proposes a novel approach, using a C2RCC processor to analyze Sentinel-2 imagery data to retrieve information on water quality in two reservoirs of Portugal, Aguieira and Alqueva. We evaluate the temporal and spatial evolution of Chl a and total suspended solids (TSS), between 20…

The instability of the adjusted and unadjusted environmental Kuznets curves

2006

We test the stability of the unadjusted and adjusted environmental Kuznets curves (EKCs). Our results provide evidence in favour of a theoretically funded "adjusted EKC hypothesis" in which the impact of per capita GDP on CO2 emissions is evaluated conditionally to the effects of the industry mix and of the energy-supply infrastructure. In this specification, the shape of the GDP-CO2 relationship appears quite sensitive to changes in the estimation period. In the final part of the paper, signs and dynamics of fixed effects of individual countries in different specifications are interpreted as measures of virtuous or vicious of environmental behaviour. © 2006 Elsevier B.V.
