SNEWS 2.0 : a next-generation supernova early warning system for multi-messenger astronomy

2021

The next core-collapse supernova in the Milky Way or its satellites will represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to obtain detailed information about the explosion of a star and provide significant scientific insight for a variety of fields because of the extreme conditions found within. Supernovae in our galaxy are not only rare on a human timescale but also happen at unscheduled times, so it is crucial to be ready and use all available instruments to capture all possible information from the event. The first indication of a potential stellar explosion will be the arrival of a bright burst of neutrinos. Its observation by multiple detectors worldwide can provide an early warning for t…

CHANGES IN SCHOOL ANXIETY AND EMOTIONAL SELF-REGULATION OF AN ADOLESCENCE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP FOLLOWING THE ABKT-B PROGRAMME

2020

The purpose of this study was to adapt the experimental programme MBCT-C (Randy J. Semple & Jennifer Lee’s programme “Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Anxious Children”, 2011) in early adolescents and compare the changes in school anxiety and emotional regulation indicators before and after in the experimental and control group. The necessity for intervention with respect to school anxiety and emotional regulation among children with emotional regulation and school anxiety issues in the early adolescence group was indicated by research into problems connected with youth behaviour and difficulties in regulating emotions. The study analysed the results of six 6th grade students (12…

The Immune Evasion Paradox: Immunoevasins of Murine Cytomegalovirus Enhance Priming of CD8 T Cells by Preventing Negative Feedback Regulation▿

2008

ABSTRACTCytomegaloviruses express glycoproteins that interfere with antigen presentation to CD8 T cells. Although the molecular modes of action of these “immunoevasins” differ between cytomegalovirus species, the convergent biological outcome is an inhibition of the recognition of infected cells. In murine cytomegalovirus, m152/gp40 retains peptide-loaded major histocompatibility complex class I molecules in acis-Golgi compartment, m06/gp48 mediates their vesicular sorting for lysosomal degradation, and m04/gp34, although not an immunoevasin in its own right, appears to assist in the concerted action of all three molecules. Using the Ld-restricted IE1 epitope YPHFMPTNL in the BALB/c mouse m…

Identification of a Kd-restricted antigenic peptide encoded by murine cytomegalovirus early gene M84

2000

The two sister cytomegaloviruses (CMVs), human and murine CMV, have both evolved immune evasion functions that interfere with the major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) pathway of antigen processing and presentation and are effectual in the early (E) phase of virus gene expression. However, studies on murine CMV have shown that E-phase immune evasion is leaky. An E-phase protein involved in immune evasion, namely m04-gp34, was found to simultaneously account for an antigenic peptide presented by the MHC-I molecule Dd. Recent work has demonstrated the induction of protective immunity specific for the E-phase protein M84-p65, one of two murine CMV homologues of the human CMV matrix …

The Body of the Soul. Lucretian Echoes in the Renaissance Theories on the Psychic Substance and its Organic Repartition

2015

In the 16th and 17th centuries, when Aristotelianism still was the leading current of natural philosophy and atomistic theories began to arise, Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura stood out as an attractive and dangerous model. The present paper reassesses several relevant aspects of Lucretius’ materialistic psychology by focusing on the problem of the soul’s repartition through the limbs discussed in Book 3. A very successful Lucretian image serves as fil rouge throughout this survey: the description of a snake chopped up, with its pieces moving on the ground (Lucretius DRN 1969, 3.657–669). The paper’s first section sets the poet’s theory against the background of ancient psychology, pointing out …

Early life adversity targets the transcriptional signature of hippocampal NG2+ glia and affects voltage gated sodium (Nav) channels properties

2021

The precise mechanisms underlying the detrimental effects of early life adversity (ELA) on adult mental health remain still elusive. To date, most studies have exclusively targeted neuronal populations and not considered neuron-glia crosstalk as a crucially important element for the integrity of stress-related brain function. Here, we have investigated the impact of ELA, in the form of a limited bedding and nesting material (LBN) paradigm, on a glial subpopulation with unique properties in brain homeostasis, the NG2+ cells. First, we have established a link between maternal behavior, activation of the offspring's stress response and heterogeneity in the outcome to LBN manipulation. We furth…

Updated BBN bounds on the cosmological lepton asymmetry for non-zero 13

2011

We discuss the bounds on the cosmological lepton number from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), in light of recent evidences for a large value of the neutrino mixing angle theta13. The largest asymmetries for electron and muon or tau neutrinos compatible with 4He and 2H primordial yields are computed versus the neutrino mass hierarchy and mixing angles. The flavour oscillation dynamics is traced till the beginning of BBN and neutrino distributions after decoupling are numerically computed. The latter contains in general, non thermal distortion due to the onset of flavour oscillations driven by solar squared mass difference in the temperature range where neutrino scatterings become inefficient …
