Bi-objective multi-layer location–allocation model for the immediate aftermath of sudden-onset disasters
2019
International audience; Locating distribution centers is critical for humanitarians in the immediate aftermath of a sudden-onset disaster. A major challenge lies in balancing the complexity and uncertainty of the problem with time and resource constraints. To address this problem, we propose a location–allocation model that divides the topography of affected areas into multiple layers; considers constrained number and capacity of facilities and fleets; and allows decision-makers to explore trade-offs between response time and logistics costs. To illustrate our theoretical work, we apply the model to a real dataset from the 2015 Nepal earthquake response. For this case, our method results in…
Managing in-country transportation risks in humanitarian supply chains by logistics service providers: Insights from the 2015 Nepal earthquake
2017
International audience; Humanitarian supply chains (HSCs) play a central role in effective and efficient disaster relief operations. Transportation has a critical share in HSCs and managing its risks helps to avoid further disruptions in relief operations. However, there is no common approach to or culture of risk management that its applicability has been studied through recent cases. This paper incorporates an empirical research design and makes a threefold contribution: first, it identifies in-country transportation risks during Nepal response. Second, we evaluate afore identified risks through an expert driven risk assessment grid. Third, we use our field data to study how some humanita…

Spatio-temporal log-Gaussian Cox processes on eartquake events
2017
In this paper we aim at studying some extensions of complex space-time models, useful for the description of earthquake data. In particular we want to focus on the Log-Gaussian Cox Process (LGCP) model estimation approach, with some results on global informal diagnostics. Indeed, in our opinion the use of Cox processes that are natural models for point process phenomena that are environmentally driven could be a new approach for the description of seismic events. These models can be useful in estimating the intensity surface of a spatio-temporal point process, in constructing spatially continuous maps of earthquake risk from spatially discrete data, and in real-time seismic activity surveil…
Local earthquake tomography in the Southern Tyrrhenian region of Italy: Geophysical and petrological inferences on subducting litosphere
2009
We obtained a high-resolution seismic tomography of the Ionian lithosphere subduction using a new approach based on: (a) the Double-Difference technique for inversions and (b) the statistical post-processing of a great number of preliminary models (Weighted Average Model, WAM method); the latter was used to increase reliability and resolution. In the tomographic model, the high-velocity portion of the steeply dipping Ionian slab is well imaged, as is an underlying low-Vp (≈7.0 km/s) aseismic region. We propose that the low-velocity region can be assigned to a partially hydrated (serpentinized) mantle of the subducting Ionian slab, which progressively dehydrates with depth in dense high-pres…
Method to find the Minimum 1D Linear Gradient Model for Seismic Tomography
2016
The changes in the state of a geophysical medium before a strong earthquake can be found by studying of 3D seismic velocity images constructed for consecutive time windows. A preliminary step is to see changes with time in a minimum 1D model. In this paper we develop a method that finds the parameters of the minimum linear gradient model by applying a two-dimensional Taylor series of the observed data for the seismic ray and by performing least-square minimization for all seismic rays. This allows us to obtain the mean value of the discrete observed variable, close to zero value.
Statistical Analysis of Macroseismic Data for a better Evaluation of Earthquakes Attenuation Laws
2020
In this work we propose a statistical approach, based on the joint analysis of macroseismic data of Italian seismic events of the last two centuries, with which we obtain simultaneously maximum likelihood estimates of attenuation laws and coordinates of hypocenters. Our first results encourage us to use in the future more complex models, with a larger number of historical earthquakes.
Fragmentation dynamics within shear bands--a model for aging tectonic faults?
2001
A numerical model for packing of fragmenting blocks in a shear band is introduced, and its dynamics is compared with that of a tectonic fault. The shear band undergoes a slow aging process in which the blocks are being grinded by the shear motion and the compression. The dynamics of the model have the same statistical characteristics as the seismic activity in faults. The characteristic magnitude distribution of earthquakes appears to result from frictional slips at small and medium magnitudes, and from fragmentation of blocks at the largest magnitudes. Aftershocks to large-magnitude earthquakes are local recombinations of the fragments before they reach a new quasi-static equilibrium. The …
