Whole-epigenome analysis in multiple myeloma reveals DNA hypermethylation of B cell-specific enhancers

2015

Abstract Analyzing the DNA methylome of multiple myeloma (MM), a plasma cell neoplasm, by whole-genome bisulfite sequencing and high-density arrays, we observed regional DNA hypermethylation embedded in extensive global hypomethylation. In contrast to the widely reported DNA hypermethylation of promoter-associated CpG islands (CGIs) in cancer, hypermethylated sites in MM as compared to normal plasma cells were located outside CpG islands and were unexpectedly associated with intronic enhancer regions active in normal B cells. Both RNA-seq and in vitro reporter assays indicated that enhancer hypermethylation is globally associated with downregulation of its host genes. ChIP-seq and DNAseI-se…

A new insight into the three-dimensional architecture of the Golgi complex: Characterization of unusual structures in epididymal principal cells.

2017

Principal epididymal cells have one of the largest and more developed Golgi complex of mammalian cells. In the present study, we have used this cell as model for the study of the three-dimensional architecture of the Golgi complex of highly secretory and endocytic cells. Electron tomography demonstrated the presence in this cell type of some unknown or very unusual Golgi structures such as branched cisternae, pocket-like cisternal invaginations or tubular connections. In addition, we have used this methodology and immunoelectron microscopy to analyze the close relationship between this organelle and both the endoplasmic reticulum and microtubules, and to describe in detail how these element…

Comparative Analysis of Four New Alternative Types of Roundabouts: “Turbo”, “Flower”, “Target” and “Four-Flyover” Roundabou

2016

Analysis of literature shows that “modern roundabouts” nowadays exist in all European countries, as well as in more than 60 countries elsewhere in the world. Nowadays, a growing number of studies, presented in scientific and professional literature, point out a poor traffic safety characteristics of “standard” two-lane roundabouts and lower capacity then was expected. These problems are resolved in more ways in different countries; however the solution, whereby the number of conflict spots is diminished has proven to be the most successful. Lower number of conflict spots is one of characteristics of the alternative types of roundabouts. The alternative types of roundabouts are usually more …

Criteria for the determination of maximal oxygen uptake in patients newly diagnosed with cancer : Baseline data from the randomized controlled trial …

2020

IntroductionMaximal oxygen uptake ([Formula: see text]) is a measure of cardiorespiratory fitness often used to monitor changes in fitness during and after treatment in cancer patients. There is, however, limited knowledge in how criteria verifying [Formula: see text] work for patients newly diagnosed with cancer. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of fulfillment of typical criteria verifying [Formula: see text] and to investigate the associations between the criteria and the test leader's evaluation whether a test was performed "to exhaustion". An additional aim was to establish new cut-points within the associated criteria.MethodsFrom the Phys-Can randomized c…

Key challenges of new and small virtual team

2007

The purpose of this thesis is to study the factors must be noticed when building a new and small virtual team. These virtual teams are groups of people who work together without the boundaries of time or space using technology (Lipnack & Stamps 2000, 18). The main goal is to study in detail some of the common challenges faced when working with the small virtual teams, especially in the early stages of team development. With this study and the results of it, the reader is aware of the challenges of virtual teams and the differences and similarities between traditional and virtual teams. In addition the reader knows also some factors that must be noticed when a new small virtual team is suppo…

Juridiskajām personām piemērojamo piespiedu ietekmēšanas līdzekļu aktualitātes un pārrobežu elementa ietekme uz procesu

2020

Bakalaura darbs “Juridiskajām personām piemērojamo piespiedu ietekmēšanas līdzekļu aktualitātes un pārrobežu elementa ietekme uz procesu” tika izstrādāts ar mērķi apzināt gadījumus, kuros var piemērot piespiedu ietekmēšanas līdzekļus juridiskām personām Latvijas krimināltiesību regulējumā, apskatīt Kriminālprocesa likuma grozījumu nepieciešamību, pastiprinot atbildības tvērumu juridiskajām personām un izvērtēt, kā juridiskās personas kriminālatbildības neīstenotā iecere saskan ar mūsdienu regulējumu. Piespiedu ietekmēšanas līdzekļu piemērošanas process juridiskām personām Latvijas krimināltiesiskajā regulējumā pastāv jau kopš 2005.gada, tomēr praksē arvien rodas jaunas problēmsituācijas. Au…

Hertagramma: somu grupas H.I.M. lingvistiskā un semiotiskā analīze

2016

Semiotikas un lingvistikas nozarē ir izstrādātas dažādas teorijas mūzikas analīzei, īpaši neaplūkojot papildu mūzikas elementu devumu mūzikas nozīmē. Metāla mūzikā šos elementus izmanto, lai grupas sevišķā mūzikas stila pamatā radītu ideju un nodotu īpašus vēstījumus. Šis pētījums nosaka un analizē grupas H.I.M. papildu mūzikas elementus. Rezultāti uzskatāmi parāda šo elementu nozīmi grupas mūzikas izpratnes procesā un to devumu grupas unikālā jēdziena 'mīlas metāls' attīstībā.

Cajaninstilbene acid (CSA) exerts cytoprotective effects against oxidative stress through the Nrf2-dependent antioxidant pathway.

2013

Cajaninstilbene acid (CSA), an active compound separated from pigeon pea leaves, possesses the highly efficient antioxidant activities. Transcription factor nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is an important regulator of cellular oxidative stress. This study examined the role of Nrf2 in CSA-mediated antioxidant effects on human hepatocarcinoma (HepG2) cell line. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon H2O2 and CSA treatment was lower than that of H2O2 alone. CSA activated Nrf2 as evaluated by Western blotting. A luciferase reporter assay also demonstrated that CSA-activated signaling resulted in the increased transcriptional activity of Nrf2 through binding to t…

A novel family of tRNA-derived SINEs in the colugo and two new retrotransposable markers separating dermopterans from primates.

2003

Abstract Short interspersed nuclear elements (SINEs) provide a near homoplasy free and copious source of molecular evolutionary markers with precisely defined character polarity. Used as molecular cladistic markers in presence/absence analyses, they represent a powerful complement to phylogenetic reconstructions that are based on sequence comparisons on the level of nucleotide substitutions. Recent sequence comparisons of large data sets incorporating a broad eutherian taxonomic sample have led to considerations of the different primate infraorders to constitute a paraphyletic group. Statistically significant support against the monophyly of primates has been obtained by clustering the flyi…

Variations in the concentrations of macro- and trace elements in two grasses and in the rhizosphere soil during a day

2019

The aim of the research was to study short-term variations in concentrations of 17 elements in two widely distributed natural plant species (couch grass and plantain) and in the rhizosphere soil of the plants. The plant and soil samples were collected in a field from a small site over a daytime. In the course of the day, the variations of the total amounts of C, N, and H in the rhizosphere soil were rather marked and different for the soils taken from roots of plantain and couch grass. The concentrations of some other elements in the rhizosphere soil of the plants varied in a similar way. The short-term variations of element concentrations in roots and leaves of the plants were also rather …
