The origins of the aesthetic enjoyment of music - A review of the literature

2009

Listeners attribute a positive or negative value to music. This aesthetic experience is known to be observable over the individuals’ entire life span, from early childhood to old age, and in every culture. It is then often concluded that such an aesthetic experience constitutes part of the human nature, having an important biological foundation. This assumption leads to the question of how aesthetic experience of music originated in the biological evolution. In this paper, we will explore this question in the light of evolutionary psychology, cognitive science, and systems neuroscience. After reviewing the existing proposals, we conclude that the explanation of the origin of aesthetic expe…

The role of reading difficulties in the associations between task values, efficacy beliefs, and achievement emotions

2018

The aim of this study was to examine the situational associations of reading-related task values and efficacy beliefs with achievement emotions, and whether these associations are moderated by reading difficulties (RD). The sample comprised 128 Finnish sixth-grade students (66 with no reading difficulties [No RD], 31 with mild reading difficulties [Mild RD], and 31 with severe reading difficulties [Severe RD]) who were randomized to complete either a non-challenging or challenging reading task. Students reported their reading-related task values (attainment and interest) and efficacy beliefs right before and their achievement emotions both before and after performing the reading task. The r…

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Graffiti

2020

Emotions play an essential role in aesthetic and art experience. Graffiti is an example of urban visual communication, and it can also be understood as a form of art. Like other works of art, graffiti can evoke different aesthetic emotions in its audiences, such as pleasure, wonder, interest and pride but also disinterest, disappointment or embarrassment, and even anger and disgust—further impacting, for example, how they value this art form. However, few studies have explored what kinds of emotions people feel when they appraise graffiti. This chapter discusses emotions in graffiti using examples from participant interviews in the Purkutaide study. Interview quotes are assessed against the…

The development of a multiliteracy-based approach in language learning: engaging students in aesthetic reading

2018

Ambivalent Emotions in Music : We Like Sad Music When It Makes Us Happy

2013

We often react ambivalently to a piece of music, simultaneously experiencing both sadness and happiness, and attributing both emotions to the musical content. Two experiments were conducted (1) to empirically test for ambivalent emotions and (2) to investigate the amount of musical information necessary to elicit such emotions. In experiment 1, synthesized musical excerpts were manipulated in tempo (fast/slow) and mode (major/minor). By using unipolar scales, listeners could independently rate how (1) happy and (2) sad the music made them feel, as well as the (3) happiness and (4) sadness perceived in the music. Regarding perceived emotion, happiness was higher in major-fast excerpts, sadne…

The Pleasant Emotion of Sad Music

2013

In general, sad music is thought to cause us to experience sadness, which is considered an unpleasant emotion. As a result, the question arises as to why we listen to sad music if it evokes sadness. We hypothesized that felt and perceived emotion may not actually coincide in this respect: sad music would be perceived as sad, but the experience of listening to sad music would evoke positive emotions. A total of 44 participants listened to mu-sical excerpts and provided data on perceived and felt emotions by rating 62 descriptive words or phrases re-lated to emotions on a scale that ranged from 0 (not at all) to 4 (very much). The results revealed that the sad music was perceived to be more t…

2014

Emotional awareness, mood and individual and social adjustment outcomes in children aged 8-12 years old. Abstract: Emotional awareness or conscious experience of emotion is a key concept related to different individual adjustment child outcomes, such as somatic complaints. This relationship, moderated by mood, has been found in preadolescent and adolescent population. However, little is known in younger children and including other adjustment outcomes, such as adaptation. Therefore, the objective of this work is to analyze the contribution of emotional awareness and mood upon different adjustment outcomes: somatic complaints and inadaptation (assessed by the test TAMAI), in children aged 8-…

Socio-emotional Experience in Human Technology Interaction Design – A Fashion Framework Proposal

2021

Technology designers and developers can be understood as social experience (SE) mediators. In user experience (UX), notions of SE have served to identify and define the factors contributing to human-technology interaction (HTI). Three dominant perspectives have been promoted in UX discourse: 1) SE of brand, brand value and consumer culture; 2) technology design as mediator of human-to-human interactions; and 3) meaning generation through action and interaction between actors. Symbolic interactionalism understands meaning as occurring through dialogue, in the construction of the social self, promoting self-reflection as a social construction. This theorisation of social experience is valuabl…

LEARNING THE VALUE OF TIME IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION

2021
