Retrospective analysis of management of ingested foreign bodies and food impactions in emergency endoscopic setting in adults.

Background: Ingestion of foreign bodies and food impaction represent the second most common endoscopic emergency after bleeding. The aim of this paper is to report the management and the outcomes in 67 patients admitted for suspected ingestion of foreign body between December 2012 and December 2014. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at Palermo University Hospitals, Italy, over a 2-year period. We reviewed patients’ database (age, sex, type of foreign body and its anatomical location, treatments, and outcomes as complications, success rates, and mortalities). Training with a computer-based simulator achieves basic manual skills required for upper endoscopy: A randomized controlled trial

Changes in medical practice have constrained the time available for education and the availability of patients for training. Computer-based simulators have been devised that can be used to achieve manual skills without patient contact. Our aim of was to identify predictors of appropriateness rate for EGD among endoscopic centres. Semantic and topological classification of images in magnetically guided capsule endoscopy

International audience; Magnetically-guided capsule endoscopy (MGCE) is a nascent technology with the goal to allow the steering of a capsule endoscope inside a water filled stomach through an external magnetic field. We developed a classification cascade for MGCE images with groups images in semantic and topological categories. Confocal laser endomicroscopy enables in vivo microscopy of the mucosal layer of the gastrointestinal tract with subcellular resolution during ongoing endoscopy. Endomicroscopy opens the door to immediate tissue and vessel analysis. Different types of diseases can be diagnosed with optical surface and subsurface analysis. Analysis of the in vivo microarchitecture can be used for targeting biopsies to relevant areas, and subsurface imaging can unmask microscopic diseases or bacterial infection.
