“To Own, or not to Own?” A multilevel analysis of intellectual property right policies' on academic entrepreneurship

2017

The political environment around universities has led them to create an infrastructure to manage academic inventions. While some consider that the advantages of a university entrepreneurial structure outweigh any potential negative effects, others question their detrimental effect on academic scientists’ entrepreneurial behavior. However, this debate remains unresolved as none of these two views have been fully empirically supported. Using multilevel models for a population of 2230 professors in 27 universities in Canada (82 individuals per unit on average), we test the effect of three features of institutional intellectual property right policy characteristics, namely, property rights (own…

The very first section of the book deals with the phenomenon of social entrepreneurship from a microeconomics perspective. In this line, the individual represents the unit of analysis, that is, the social entrepreneur. Social entrepreneurs are agents who intend to make a positive change in society in such a way that their solution presents a tool to improve the quality of life of the segment of the population they want to target. In these first pages, our intention has been to explain what is inside the mind of the social entrepreneur in the process of developing the idea and putting it into practice. On the Substitutability between Paid-employment and Self-employment: Evidence from the Period 1969–2014 in the United States

2019

This paper provides estimates of the elasticity of substitution between operational and managerial jobs in the US economy during the years 1969–2014, derived from an aggregate CES production function. Estimating the long-term relationship between (the log of) the aggregate employment/self-employment ratio and (the log of) the returns from paid-employment relative to self-employment and testing for structural breaks, we report different estimates of the elasticity of substitution in each of the two regimes identified. To this end we apply the methodology on instability tests proposed in Kejriwal and Perron (2008, 2010) as well as the cointegration tests developed in Arai and Kurozumi (2007) …

ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN THE INFORMATION SOCIETY

2015

Entrepreneurship started to be recognized during the French monarch Louis XIV who stated that "the bourgeois and the craftsmen will become the artisans of richness". Several national and international institutions whose main activity was the study of environment and entrepreneurial behavior defined the entrepreneurship in the following manner: "An entrepreneur is a person who, based on certain contractual clauses and conditions, undertakes to execute for another person and organizations, various works (industrial, constructions, etc.) in the exchange of a previously established reward".

The incubation process for the creation of viable firms: the case of ARCA Consortium

2015

The aim of this study is to demonstrate that academic incubators play a key role in firm viability. This study develops a new analytic systemic framework that reveals the processes and factors that determine the effectiveness of the incubation process supported by university incubators. We analyse the effectiveness of the incubation process in the incubator of the ARCA Consortium by means of a single case study with an embedded design. In this study, adopting a systemic perspective, we shift the focus from the firm to the context, shedding light on the systemic actions that create the prerequisite conditions for the achievement of the firms’ viability.

Family Business and Habitual Entrepreneurship : Differences and Similarities

2008

This study examines the prevalence of different types of entrepreneurs in the context of family business. In previous studies the family entrepreneurs have been seen loyal to their original firm, whereas relinquishing a firm is substantially connected to the habitual entrepreneurs. It may be one reason why these entrepreneurial dimensions have not been largely connected in previous studies. However, this does not mean that habitual entrepreneurship would not exist in family business. Thus the aim of this study is to explore the connections between habitual entrepreneurship and family business by examining, firstly, how many family entrepreneurs there are among portfolio, serial and first-ti…
