The Be/X-ray Transient V0332+53: Evidence for a tilt between the orbit and the equatorial plane?

We present optical and infrared observations of BQ Cam, the optical counterpart to the Be/X-ray transient system V0332+53. BQ Cam is shown to be an O8-9Ve star, which places V0332+53 at a distance of ~7 kpc. H-alpha spectroscopy and infrared photometry are used to discuss the evolution of the circumstellar envelope. Due to the low inclination of the system, parameters are strongly constrained. We find strong evidence for a tilt of the orbital plane with respect to the circumstellar disc (pressumably on the equatorial plane). Long-term variability of the Be/X-ray binary EXO 2030+375

We present a multi-wavelength study of the Be/X-ray binary system EXO 2030+375. We report that the Be companion is currently in a low-activity phase as indicated by the notable decrease of the infrared and optical emission. If this trend continues the source will lose its circumstellar envelope. Infrared spectroscopy in the IJHK bands is presented for the first time, along with optical and X-ray observations. These infrared spectra agree with the optical companion being an early-type (B0) main-sequence star. When active EXO 2030+375 shows an X-ray outburst at each periastron passage of the neutron star. Lossless equalization of frequency combs

Frequency combs obtained by sinusoidal phase modulation of narrow-band continuous-wave lasers are widely used in the field of optical communications. However, the resulting spectral envelope of the comb is not at. In this Letter, we propose a general and eficient approach to achieve at frequency combs with tunable bandwidth. The idea is based on a two-step process. First, eficient generation of a train with temporal at-top-pulse profile is required. Second, we use large parabolic phase modulation in every train period in order to map the temporal intensity shape into the spectral domain. Abstract We study analytically the solution of nonlinear equation which result from the propagation of electromagnetic waves within a nonlinear Kerr medium. The medium is characterized by a dielectric constant which varies periodically and depends on the local field intensity. As a first step, we detail the resolution of the nonlinear equations with a quadratic nonlinearity. After that, we apply the slowly varying envelope approximation to obtain a Sine–Gordon equation. Analytical characterization of spectral anomalies in polychromatic apertured beams

Abstract The power spectrum of polychromatic apertured spherical waves changes strongly in the vicinity of phase singularities. A spectral shift effect is observed and, in some cases, a spectral switch occurs together with a broadening of the power spectrum. Low-order moments of the power spectrum are evaluated in points of the focal volume with spectral anomalies. First-order analytical expressions are proposed for the evaluation of the relative spectral shift and the relative spectral broadening in the transverse focal plane and along the optical axis. The influence of the fractional bandwidth and the selected singularity order is considered.
Models and Astrophysical Parameters of High Mass X-ray Binaries

The objective of this work is the High Mass X-ray Binaries. These systems consist of a neutron star orbiting around a star of spectral type OB. According to the luminosity class of the optical companion they split into Supergiant X-ray binaries and Be/X-ray systems. In both systems the high energy radiation is due to the accretion phenomenum, but in the first case the accreted metter comes from the strong stellar wind of the primary and in the second case it comes from the circumstellar envelope surrounding the Be star equator. International audience; We describe the influence of the initial phase profile on the convergence towards asymptotic self-similar parabolic shape. More precisely, based on numerical simulations, we discuss the impact of an initial linear chirp and a p phase shift. If the parabolic shape has been found to describe accurately the pulse envelope, dark structures can appear and evolve also self-similarly on the parabolic background.
Spectral analog of the Gouy phase shift

We demonstrate the existence of the spectral phase shift a pulse experiences when it is subjected to spectral focusing. This $\frac{\ensuremath{\pi}}{2}$ phase shift is the spectral analog of the Gouy phase shift a 2D beam experiences when it crosses its focal plane. This spectral Gouy phase shift is measured using spectral interference between a reference pulse and a negatively chirped parabolic pulse experiencing spectral focusing in a nonlinear photonic crystal fiber. To avoid inherent phase instability in the measurement, both reference and parabolic pulses are generated with a $4\mathrm{\text{\ensuremath{-}}}f$ pulse shaper and copropagate in the same fiber. Effect of population patchiness and migration rates on the adaptation and divergence of vesicular stomatitis virus quasispecies populations

The effect of migration among different isolated virus quasispecies populations on their adaptation and diversity was analysed through experimental evolution. Anin vitrocell system was employed to simulate migration of vesicular stomatitis virus between isolated homogeneous host cell populations. The results clearly demonstrated a positive correlation between the migration rate and the magnitude of the mean fitness reached by the virus quasispecies populations. The results also showed, although less clearly, that fitness differences among quasispecies decreased with the magnitude of migration. Contribution of Taq polymerase-induced errors to the estimation of RNA virus diversity.

The genetic diversity of a vesicular stomatitis virus population was analysed by RT-PCR, cloning and sequencing of two approximately 500 nucleotide regions of the virus genome. PCR amplifications were performed in parallel experiments with both Taq and Pfu DNA polymerases, and important differences were observed. Between 10 and 22 mutations were detected when virus populations were analysed by Taq amplification (20 clones from each region), whereas amplification of the same samples with Pfu revealed between 0 and 5 mutations.
