Identification of control targets in Boolean molecular network models via computational algebra

2015

Motivation: Many problems in biomedicine and other areas of the life sciences can be characterized as control problems, with the goal of finding strategies to change a disease or otherwise undesirable state of a biological system into another, more desirable, state through an intervention, such as a drug or other therapeutic treatment. The identification of such strategies is typically based on a mathematical model of the process to be altered through targeted control inputs. This paper focuses on processes at the molecular level that determine the state of an individual cell, involving signaling or gene regulation. The mathematical model type considered is that of Boolean networks. The pot…

Current Predictive Resting Metabolic Rate Equations Are Not Sufficient to Determine Proper Resting Energy Expenditure in Olympic Young Adult National…

2021

Predictive resting metabolic rate (RMR) equations are widely used to determine athletes’ resting energy expenditure (REE). However, it remains unclear whether these predictive RMR equations accurately predict REE in the athletic populations. The purpose of the study was to compare 12 prediction equations (Harris-Benedict, Mifflin, Schofield, Cunningham, Owen, Liu’s, De Lorenzo) with measured RMR in Turkish national team athletes and sedentary controls. A total of 97 participants, 49 athletes (24 females, 25 males), and 48 sedentary (28 females, 20 males), were recruited from Turkey National Olympic Teams at the Ministry of Youth and Sports. RMR was measured using a Fitmate GS (Cosmed, Italy…

Pietro Mengoli and the six-square problem

1994

The aim of this paper is to analyze a little known aspect of Pietro Mengoli's (1625-1686) mathematical activity: the difficulties he faced in trying to solve some problems in Diophantine analysis suggested by J. Ozanam. Mengoli's recently published correspondence reveals how he cherished his prestige as a scholar. At the same time, however, it also shows that his insufficient familiarity with algebraic methods prevented him, as well as other Italian mathematicians of his time, from solving the so-called “French” problems. Quite different was the approach used for the same problems by Leibniz, who, although likewise partially unsuccessful, demonstrated a deeper mathematical insight which led…

One repetition maximum bench press performance: A new approach for its evaluation in inexperienced males and females: A pilot study

2014

Summary The aim of this study was to evaluate a new method to perform the one repetition maximum (1RM) bench press test, by combining previously validated predictive and practical procedures. Eight young male and 7 females participants, with no previous experience of resistance training, performed a first set of repetitions to fatigue (RTF) with a workload corresponding to 1/3 of their body mass (BM) for a maximum of 25 repetitions. Following a 5-min recovery period, a second set of RTF was performed with a workload corresponding to 1/2 of participants’ BM. The number of repetitions performed in this set was then used to predict the workload to be used for the 1RM bench press test using May…

Analytical solution of kinematic wave time of concentration for overland flow under green-ampt infiltration

2015

In this paper the well-known kinematic wave equation for computing the time of concentration for impervious surfaces has been extended to the case of pervious hillslopes, accounting for infiltration. An analytical solution for the time of concentration for overland flow on a rectangular plane surface is derived using the kinematic wave equation under the Green-Ampt infiltration. The relative time of concentration is defined as the ratio between the time of concentration of an infiltrating plane and the soil sorptivity time scale, depending on the normalized rainfall intensity and a parameter synthesizing the soil and hillslope characteristics. It is shown that for a more complex case (corre…

The inverse kinematics solutions of a 7 DOF robotic arm using Fuzzy Logic

2012

This paper focuses on modeling resolving and simulations of the inverse kinematics of an anthropomorphic redundant robotic structure with seven degrees of freedom and a workspace similar to human arm. Also the kinematical model and the kinematics equations of the robotic arm are presented. A method of resolving the redundancy of seven degrees of freedom robotic arm is presented using Fuzzy Logic toolbox from MATLAB®.

Non-autonomous rough semilinear PDEs and the multiplicative Sewing Lemma

2021

We investigate existence, uniqueness and regularity for local solutions of rough parabolic equations with subcritical noise of the form $du_t- L_tu_tdt= N(u_t)dt + \sum_{i = 1}^dF_i(u_t)d\mathbf X^i_t$ where $(L_t)_{t\in[0,T]}$ is a time-dependent family of unbounded operators acting on some scale of Banach spaces, while $\mathbf X\equiv(X,\mathbb X)$ is a two-step (non-necessarily geometric) rough path of H\"older regularity $\gamma >1/3.$ Besides dealing with non-autonomous evolution equations, our results also allow for unbounded operations in the noise term (up to some critical loss of regularity depending on that of the rough path $\mathbf X$). As a technical tool, we introduce a versi…

Gradient flows in random walk spaces

2021

Biexciton formation and exciton coherent coupling in layered GaSe.

2015

Nonlinear two-dimensional Fourier transform (2DFT) and linear absorption spectroscopy are used to study the electronic structure and optical properties of excitons in the layered semiconductor GaSe. At the 1s exciton resonance, two peaks are identified in the absorption spectra, which are assigned to splitting of the exciton ground state into the triplet and singlet states. 2DFT spectra acquired for co-linear polarization of the excitation pulses feature an additional peak originating from coherent energy transfer between the singlet and triplet. At cross-linear polarization of the excitation pulses, the 2DFT spectra expose a new peak likely originating from bound biexcitons. The polarizati…
