Non-immersion theorem for a class of hyperbolic manifolds

1998

Abstract It is proved that a non-simply-connected complete hyperbolic manifold cannot be isometrically immersed in a Euclidean space with a flat normal connection. In particular, the complete hyperbolic manifold M n with π 1 ( M ) ≠ 0 cannot be isometrically immersed in R 2 n − 1 .

The horospherical Gauss-Bonnet type theorem in hyperbolic space

2006

We introduce the notion horospherical curvatures of hypersurfaces in hyperbolic space and show that totally umbilic hypersurfaces with vanishing cur- vatures are only horospheres. We also show that the Gauss-Bonnet type theorem holds for the horospherical Gauss-Kronecker curvature of a closed orientable even dimensional hypersurface in hyperbolic space. + (i1) by using the model in Minkowski space. We introduced the notion of hyperbolic Gauss indicatrices slightly modified the definition of hyperbolic Gauss maps. The notion of hyperbolic indicatrices is independent of the choice of the model of hyperbolic space. Using the hyperbolic Gauss indicatrix, we defined the principal hyperbolic curv…

Rate of Mixing for Equilibrium States in Negative Curvature and Trees

2021

In this survey based on the recent book by the three authors, we recall the Patterson-Sullivan construction of equilibrium states for the geodesic flow on negatively curved orbifolds or tree quotients, and discuss their mixing properties, emphasizing the rate of mixing for (not necessarily compact) tree quotients via coding by countable (not necessarily finite) topological shifts. We give a new construction of numerous nonuniform tree lattices such that the (discrete time) geodesic flow on the tree quotient is exponentially mixing with respect to the maximal entropy measure: we construct examples whose tree quotients have an arbitrary space of ends or an arbitrary (at most exponential) grow…

Mechanical unfolding pathway of a model β-peptide foldamer.

2015

Foldamers constructed from oligomers of β-peptides form stable secondary helix structures already for small chain lengths, which makes them ideal candidates for the investigation of the (un)folding of polypeptides. Here, the results of molecular simulations of the mechanical unfolding of a β-heptapeptide in methanol solvent revealing the detailed unfolding pathway are reported. The unfolding process is shown to proceed via a stable intermediate even for such a small system. This result is arrived at performing non-equilibrium force ramp simulations employing different pulling velocities and also using standard calculations of the potential of mean force, i.e., the free energy as a function …

Chemical separation and MC-ICPMS analysis of U, Th, Pa and Ra isotope ratios of carbonates

2018

Diagenetic alteration of fossil reef corals may have severe effects on the reliability of 230Th/U-ages. The widely applied criteria introduced to test for the reliability of coral 230Th/U-ages are often not sufficient to identify all altered ages. The combination of 230Th/U- with 231Pa/U-dating has been suggested as a promising method to identify altered ages. Furthermore, 226Ra/230Th ratios can provide information about the diagenetic history during the last 10 000 years. Here we present a method to chemically separate U, Th, Pa and Ra from the same aliquot of a carbonate sample. The isotope ratios of our mixed U–Th–Pa–Ra spike are calibrated using a secular equilibrium material treated in…

Time-dependent resonance interaction energy between two entangled atoms under nonequilibrium conditions

2018

We consider the time-dependent resonance interaction energy between two identical atoms, one in the ground state and the other in an excited state, and interacting with the vacuum electromagnetic field, during a nonequilibrium situation such as the dynamical atomic self-dressing process. We suppose the two atoms prepared in a correlated, symmetric or antisymmetric, state. Since the atoms start from a nonequilibrium conditions, their interaction energy is time dependent. We obtain, at second order in the atom-field coupling, an analytic expression for the time-dependent resonance interaction energy between the atoms. We show that this interaction vanishes when the two atoms are outside the l…

Evidence for the Existence of an Effective Interfacial Tension between Miscible Fluids: Isobutyric Acid-Water and 1-Butanol-Water in a Spinning-Drop …

2006

We report definitive evidence for an effective interfacial tension between two types of miscible fluids using spinning-drop tensiometry (SDT). Isobutyric acid (IBA) and water have an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) of 26.3 degrees C. We created a drop of the IBA-rich phase in the water-rich phase below the UCST and then increased the temperature above it. Long after the fluids have reached thermal equilibrium, the drop persists. By plotting the inverse of the drop radius cubed (r(-)(3)) vs the rotation rate squared (omega(2)), we confirmed that an interfacial tension exists and estimated its value. The transition between the miscible fluids remained sharp instead of becoming more…

Sequestration of (CH3)Hg+ by amino‐polycarboxylic chelating agents

2012

Abstract The speciation of mono-methylmercury(II) cation (MeHg+) in the presence of Nitrilotriacetate (NTA), Ethylenediamine-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetate (EDTA), diethylenetriamine-N,N,N′,N″,N″-pentaacetate (DTPA) and (S,S)- Ethylenediamine-N,N′-disuccinic acid (S,S-EDDS) was investigated at I = 0.1 mol L− 1 (NaCl) with the aim to assess a trend of sequestering capacity of the amino‐polycarboxylic (APCs) ligand class towards this cation in aqueous solution. The results obtained gave evidence for the formation of a mononuclear [MeHg(APC)] complex species, differently protonated MeHg(HiL) species (i = 1 to 3, depending on the APC considered), a mixed hydroxo species [MeHg(APC)(OH)] and a binuclear …
