Sensitivity of the SIMulation-EXtrapolation (SIMEX) methodology to mis-specification of the statistical properties of the measurement errors
2023
In hydrometeorological and environmental studies, it is common to seek relations between two variables (predictand and predictor), one of which (predictor) is affected by uncertainties. These errors unavoidably affect the results of the analyses by providing erroneous estimates of the parameters of the predictor-predictand model. A possible solution is represented by the SIMulation-EXtrapolation (SIMEX) methodology. This approach follows two steps: (1) perturbation of the predictor with increasing levels of uncertainties (multiples of the known error variance); and (2) finding a relation between the model's parameters and level of uncertainty, which allows their extrapolation to the error-f…
Rejection odds and rejection ratios: A proposal for statistical practice in testing hypotheses
2016
Much of science is (rightly or wrongly) driven by hypothesis testing. Even in situations where the hypothesis testing paradigm is correct, the common practice of basing inferences solely on p-values has been under intense criticism for over 50 years. We propose, as an alternative, the use of the odds of a correct rejection of the null hypothesis to incorrect rejection. Both pre-experimental versions (involving the power and Type I error) and post-experimental versions (depending on the actual data) are considered. Implementations are provided that range from depending only on the p-value to consideration of full Bayesian analysis. A surprise is that all implementations -- even the full Baye…

CAPI Versus PAPI and The Production of Some Non-Sampling Errors
2009
The study aims at assessing the differential effects of face-to-face paper and computer assisted interviewing in terms of efficacy, efficiency and the production of non-sampling errors. The research ground is constituted by the analysis of the customer satisfaction of a large-scale retail trade group owning many shops in Sicily. The reaction of respondents to paper versus electronic questionnaires is investigated by means of an experimental design in terms of non sampling error amounts.

Diagnostic morphology of human eye-related storage disorders
1989
While retina and other ocular tissues are involved clinically and morphologically in a variety of lysosomal disorders, it is only the conjunctiva that is accessible by biopsy to morphological, i.e., electron microscopic recognition of the patient's individual lysosomal disease. However, this procedure is not utilized by many. Instead, skin and circulating lymphocytes are the most frequently obtained tissues for diagnostic investigation, as skin contains an abundance of diversified cell types for morphological examination and simultaneously fibroblasts to be cultured for biochemical investigation. It is the tissue most suitable for identifying lysosomal disorders and parallels in diagnostic …
Dentistry and Drug Adverse Events: Between Responsibilities and Regulations
2022
The purpose of this paper is to renew interest and attention to the medical history, prescription, and/or use of drugs during dental practice. The work analyzes the issue of the use of drugs in dentistry from both a clinical and a medical–legal point of view. The laws governing the matter were also taken into consideration, relating them to the roles of prescriber and user that the dentist can acquire. Analysis of various aspects of this matter demonstrates that it is necessary for dentists to know the drugs and medical substances, their characteristics and properties, related effects, and interactions in order to use them appropriately and adequately. Knowledge of interferences, reac…
Price Theory and US Antitrust: a Note on an Enduring Legal Doctrine
2013
Since the mid-1980s the post-Chicago approach to antitrust economics has produced a few game-theoretic models which have challenged many typical Chicago antitrust propositions. Yet, Chicago style antitrust has not yet lost its hold on u.s. antitrust. The paper suggests that the Chicago persistence within u.s. antitrust and, by the same token, the inhospitality of u.s. antitrust towards game-theoretical Industrial Organization theory owe much to the vitality of the legal doctrine according to which antitrust analysis should be consistent with traditional price theory. In particular, the paper analyzes two issues: i. the adoption of the equilibrium end-state notion of competition which is sti…
Lichen sclerosus Mistaken for Sexual Abuse – Prevention of Victimization
2014
This case report describes the forensic examination of 7 girls aged between 4-11 years with suspected sexual abuse. The children had been reported by local pediatricians, hospital physicians or authorities such as the youth welfare office and police due to mucosal changes in the anogenital area. All children presented with a clearly delimited, porcelain-like white discoloration of the skin in the anal and genital area with atrophic conversion to parchment-like skin. The markedly vulnerable skin exhibited very different manifestations of hemorrhagic dermal and mucosal defects in the area of the labia, the clitoris, the perineum and the perianal region. The hymen was intact in all cases. The …
Adaptive trial design: a general methodology for censored time to event data.
2008
Adaptive designs allow a clinical trial design to be changed according to interim findings without inflating type I error. The Inverse Normal method can be considered as an adaptive generalization of classical group sequential designs. The use of the Inverse Normal method for censored survival data was demonstrated only for the logrank statistic. However, the logrank statistic is inefficient in the presence of nuisance covariates affecting survival. We demonstrate, how the Inverse Normal method can be applied to Cox regression analysis. The required independence between test statistics of the different stages of the trial can be obtained by two different approaches. One is using the indepen…
