Chemical composition and phytotoxic effects of essential oils of Salvia hierosolymitana Boiss. and Salvia multicaulis Vahl. var. simplicifolia Boiss.…

2009

The chemical composition of the essential oils of S. hierosolymitana Boiss. and S. multicaulis Vahl. var. simplicifolia Boiss. collected in Lebanon was studied by means of GC and GC-MS analysis. In all 115 compounds were identified: 82 for S hierosolymitana and 72 for S. multicaulis var. simplicifolia. The presence of carbonylic compounds (17%) characterizes the oil from S. hierosolymitana, while S. multicaulis var. simplicifolia oil is rich of monoterpenes (34.5%) and sesquiterpenes (46.9%). The effects of the essential oils on germination and initial radical elongation of Raphanus sativus L. (radish) and Lepidium sativum L. (garden cress) were studied, indicating in a different activity a…

Cardiac Remodeling According to the Nocturnal Fall of Blood Pressure in Hypertensive Subjects: The Whole Assessment of Cardiac Abnormalities in Non-D…

2021

Objective: Several epidemiological studies suggest that the preservation of the physiological circadian rhythm of blood pressure or its disruption affects the extent of the organ damage developed by the patient. If we classify the circadian rhythm of blood pressure into four nocturnal profiles, significant differences emerge in terms of organ damage burden and prognosis: reverse dippers have the worst prognosis while dippers and mild dippers fall into an intermediate risk range. The risk profile of extreme dippers is still debated, and the available data are very conflicting and inconclusive. Starting from this gap of knowledge, we aimed to evaluate, retrospectively, in a cohort of hyperten…

Anti-Listeria activity of citrus essential oils in a fresh ovine cheese

2023

The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-Listeria activity of essential oils (EOs) extracted from the peel of lemons, oranges and tangerines in a fresh cheese produced with pasteurized ewe’s milk. Four cheesemaking trials were performed at the pilot plant scale level, including one control production without the addition of EOs and three experimental productions obtained by the addition of 200 μL/L of each EOs to milk. Before the addition of EOs, the milk of all trials was inoculated with 107 CFU/mL of the starter cultures (Lactococcus lactis NT1 and NT5) and 104 CFU/mL of pathogenic bacteria (Listeria monocytogenes ATCC19114). Plate counts confirmed the dominance of the starter cultu…

Effects of Citrus essential oils on weed emergence and on soil microorganisms

2017

Weed invasion is a major problem for agricultural productivity since causes economic and environmental damages. Weed control can be achieved through chemical, mechanical, biological and cultural means. Although synthetic herbicides are effective for weed control, they have a negative impact on soil and the environment. Therefore, it is important to develop alternative means that are in the meanwhile effective and ecofriendly. EOs are commonly used for bactericidal, virucidal, fungicidal, antiparasitical, insecticidal, medicinal and cosmetic applications. Citrus EOs are the most widely used in the world for many purposes. Moreover, some studies have recently investigated their potential as h…

Interdonato lemon from Nizza di Sicilia (Italy): chemical composition of hexane extract of lemon peel and histochemical investigation

2015

Considering that the determination of authenticity and of the geographical origin of food is a very challenging issue, in this study we studied by means of histological and histochemical analyses the famous Sicilian lemon known as ‘Interdonato Lemon of Messina PGI’. Since the protected geographical indication Interdonato lemon of Messina possesses high organoleptic properties, the composition of the hexane extract of lemon peel was determined by HRGC and HRGC–MS analyses and compared with that of lemon of different cultivars. The results obtained are informative of the oil’s quality and explain the variation of the lemon essential oil composition. Given the fundamental economic implications…

Antilisterial effect of citrus essential oils and their performance inedible film formulations

2016

[EN] The antimicrobial activity of eight essential oils (EOs) extracted from the fruit peel of Citrus genotypes (orange, mandarin and lemon) was evaluated against 76 strains of Listeria monocytogenes, previously isolated from different food matrices. EOs showing the most (EO L2 and EO L8) and least (EO O3 and EO M7) effective inhibition activities were chemically characterized by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS) to compare their composition. EO L2 and EO L8 were chosen to determine the MIC and to evaluate the cell viability of the most sensitive strains (L. monocytogenes LM35 and LM69) after 1, 2, 4 and 6 h of exposure. The effectiveness of chitosan (CH) and methylc…

Differential diagnostic features of bone marrow biopsies in essential thrombocythemia

2004

Essential Thrombocythemia (ET) is a chronic myeloproliferative disorder (CMPD) characterized by a high platelet count and originating from a multipotent stem cell. For a long time, according to Polycythaemia Vera Study Group (PVSG) criteria, ET diagnosis has not included histopathological data. Bone Marrow (BM) histology was used only to exclude previous or other subtypes of Ph-CMD or Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). In addition, the lack of any cytogenetic or molecular-biological marker has made the discrimination between ET and cases of Reactive Thrombocytosys (RT) without a well known cause quite problematic. Analogously, the distinction of ET from the other Ph- CMPDs with similar clinic…

Packing dimensions of sections of sets

1999

We obtain a formula for the essential supremum of the packing dimensions of the sections of sets parallel to a given subspace. This depends on a variant of packing dimension defined in terms of local projections of sets.

Biotechnology and Cultural Heritage Conservation

2020

The deterioration of cultural asset is induced by biological, chemical, and physical factors, influenced by anthropogenic activity and environmental conditions. In this study, the contribution of biotechnology is emphasized to define the conservation strategy, for a marble Fountain (Two Dragons, XV century) located in Palermo city center, based on an integrated approach and eco-friendly procedures. Biotechnological protocols are preliminarily applied as an integrated approach, based on microscopy observation, in vitro culture and genomic DNA analysis to recognize and characterize microbial communities. Several biological systems have been identified: green algae (Chlorella) and cyanobacteri…
